Various techniques and strategies have been developed for the identification of intracellular metabolic conditions, and among them, isotope balance-based flux analysis with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/ MS) has recently become popular. Even though isotope balance-based flux analysis allows a more accurate estimation of intracellular fluxes, its application has been restricted to relatively small metabolic systems because of the limited number of measurable metabolites. In this paper, a strategy for incorporating isotope balance-based flux data obtained for a small network into metabolic flux analysis was examined as a feasible alternative allowing more accurate quantification of intracellular flux distribution in a large metabolic system. To impose GC/MS based data into a large metabolic network and obtain optimum flux distribution profile, data reconciliation procedure was applied. As a result, metabolic flux values of 308 intracellular reactions could be estimated from 29 GC/ MS based fluxes with higher accuracy.
Alpha track technology can provide useful isotopic information of boron in the primary coolant water. In the quantitative analysis using the alpha track analysis, the shape or area of sample on the solid track detector becomes very important, especially for the analysis of liquid samples. In this research, a multi-dot plate has been developed for this purpose. The multi-dot plate provides fixed standard shape of the sample solution that stays inside of the printed circle, and consequently increases the reproducibility of the boron analysis.

Research about spherical shells been applying most usually is achieved by many investigators already and generalized equation has been derived. But, existent research is limited in case that spherical shell's roof rigidity is isotropy or orthotropy, and research that consider periodicity of rigidity-distribution that can happen by doing spherical shell's roof system by lattice system is not gone entirely. The purpose of this paper is applying Galerkin method to spherical shell that model periodicity of roof rigidity distribution that appear by roof lattice form of large space structure and develop structural analysis program that formularize. Rigidity-model of this research selects that of spherical shell which has 2-way grid. In this paper, buckling-strength and deformation distribution of isotopic spherical shell and 2-way grid spherical shell obtained by developed program could confirm the reliability by comparison with result of existent research.

The accuracy and noninvasive nature of the doubly labeled water (DLW) method makes it ideal for the study of human energy metabolism in free-living conditions. However, the DLW method is not always practical in many developing and Asian countries because of the high costs of isotopes and equipment for isotope analysis as well as the expertise required for analysis. This review provides information about the theoretical background and practical aspects of the DLW method, including optimal dose, basic protocols of two-and multiple-point approaches, experimental procedures, and isotopic analysis. We also introduce applications of DLW data, such as determining the equations of estimated energy requirement and validation studies of energy intake.

It is reported that the intensity of rainfall will likely increase, on average, over the world on 2000. For water resources security, many studies for flow paths from rainfall or snowmelt to subsurface have been conducted. In Korea, few isotopic studies for characterizations of flow path have been undertaken. For a better understanding of how water derived from atmosphere moves to subsurface and from subsurface to stream, an analysis of precipitation and stream water using oxygen-18 and deuterium isotopes in a small watershed, Dorim-cheon, Seoul, was conducted with high resolution data. Variations of oxygen-18 in precipitation greater than 10 (δ18Omax = −1.21, δ18Omin = −11.23) were observed. Isotopic compositions of old water (groundwater) assumed as the stream water collected in advance were −8.98 and −61.85 for oxygen and hydrogen, respectively. Using a two-component mixing model, hydrograph separation of the stream water in Dorim-cheon was conducted based on weighted mean value of δ18O. As a result, except of instant dominance of rainfall, contribution of old water was dominant during the study period. On average, 71.3% of the old water and 28.7% of rainfall contributed to the stream water. The results show that even in the small watershed, which is covered with thin soil layer in granite mountain region, the stream water is considerably influenced by old water inflow rather than rainfall.

The uranium isotopic ratio in environmental samples around nuclear facilities is important because it reveals information regarding illegal activities or anthropogenic pollution. Determination of uranium isotopes, however, is a challenging task requiring much labor and time because of the complex separation procedures and lengthy process. In this study, a rapid determination method for uranium isotopes in environmental samples was developed using. The sample was completely decomposed using the alkali fusion method. The separation procedure using extraction chromatography (UTEVA) was simplified in a single step without any further removal process for Si and major matrix elements. The established method can be completed within 3 h from sample dissolution to ICP-MS measurement. Most matrix elements and uranium isotopes in the soil samples were well separated and purified. Five types of were used to assess the method's accuracy and precision for a rapid uranium analysis method. The analytical accuracy for all CRM samples ranged from 95.1 % to 97.8 %, and the relative standard deviation was below 3.9 %. From the analytical results, one may draw conclusions that the evaluated method for uranium isotopes using alkali-fusion, the extraction chromatography process, and ICP-MS measurements is fast and fairly reliable owing to its recovering efficiencies. Thus, it is expected that the evaluated method can contribute to the improvement of environmental monitoring ability.
Kyeonggi Gneiss complex forming Korean Precambrian basement is mainly composed of high-grade metasedimentary rocks, which are generally difficult to determine their absolute ages. We examined the feasibility of successive absolute age determination method for the marbles from this basement. We used hydrochloric acid for the selective dissolution of carbonate minerals from the marbles. Trace element analysis shows that most of Zr and Rb are concentrated in the residues. U in the residue is more abundant than that in HC1-dissolved parts. Pb, Sr, Sm, and Nd are somewhat evenly distributed between HC1-dissolved parts and the residues. }Th shows rather complex behavior. Sr isotopic compositions of the HC1-dissolved parts reveal mixing with Sr from non-carbonate minerals having much higher $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratios. We suggest that the most reliable method in the age determination for the marbles of this area is measuring Pb isotopic ratios of the pieces of pure marbles.

Multi-regression statistical analyses were applied for the water quality data of shallow alluvial ground water (n = 47) collected from the Youngdeok area, in order to quantitatively generalize the natural (non-anthropogenic) causes of regional water quality variation. Seven samples having the high contamination index ( $C_{a}$ > 3) reflect the striong effects by anthropogenic activity. Most of the alluvial groundwaters have acquired their quality primarily due to the dissolution of carbonate minerals. The results of multi-regression analysis show that chlorine is mainly derived from seawater effect. Sulfur isotopic compositions of dissolved sulfur and the S $O_4$/Cl ratio also enable us to discriminate the samples (n = 18) which are affected by atmospheric input of marine aerosol (sea-spray) and also by mixing between freshwater and seawater. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope data of the samples collected lie close to the local meteoric water line obtained from nearby Pohang city but has lower slope (5.45) on the $\delta$D-$^{18}$ O plot, indicating that alluvial groundwater was recharged from infiltrated meteoric water which has undergone some degree of kinetic evaporation. The estimated initial isotopic composition of the recharged water ($\delta$D = -74.8$^{0}$ /$_{00}$, $\delta$$^{18}$ O = -10.8$^{[-1000]}$ /$_{[-1000]}$ ) suggests that the alluvial ground water recharge largely occurs during summer storm events.s.s.
Studies using stable water vapor isotopes have been recently conducted over the past two decades because of difficulties in analysis and sample collection in the past. Stable water vapor isotope data provide information of the moisture transport from ocean to continent, which are also used to validate an isotope enabled general circulation model for paleoclimate reconstructions. The isotopic compositions of groundwater and water vapor also provide a clue to how moisture moves from soil to atmosphere by evapotranspiration. International Atomic Energy Agency designates the stations over the world to observe the water vapor isotopes. To analyze the water vapor isotopes, a cryogenic sampling method has been used over the past two decades. Recently, two types of laser-based spectroscopy have been developed and remotely sensed data from satellites have the global coverage. In this review, measurements of isotopic compositions of water vapor will be introduced and some studies using the water vapor isotopes will also be introduced. Finally, we will suggest the future study in Korea.
This study compares eight bronze spoons in the Goryeo Dynasty and analyzes their components and lead isotopes in order to confirm the relationship between their production sites and excavation sites. Most of the excavated spoons have elliptical heads, and their handles are categorized into two types. Bronze spoons are made of binary Cu-Sn alloys, but Pb is not added. The same artifacts can have different trace elements depending on location, and the spoons had high Ag content. According to an analysis of their lead isotopic ratio, they were made with raw materials produced in Zone 3 of the South Korean galena map. If the data of the trace elements in the raw ores of the bronze is accumulated, it can be used to indicate the provenance of the artifacts.
