In an effort to find alternate, environment friendly and sustainable building materials, the scope of possible utilization of iron slag (I-sand), generated as a by-product in iron and steel industries, as fine aggregates in reinforced cement concrete (RCC) made with manufactured sand (M-sand) is examined in this manuscript. Systematic investigations of the physical, mechanical, microstructural and durability properties of I-sand in comparison with RCC made with M-sand have been carried out on various mix designs prepared by the partial/full replacement of I-sand in M-sand. The experimental results clearly indicate the possibility of utilizing iron slag for preparing RCC in constructions without compromising on the property of concrete, durability and performance. This provides an alternate possibility for the effective utilization of industrial waste, which is normally disposed by delivering to landfills, in building materials which can reduce the adverse environmental effects caused by indiscriminate sand mining being carried out to meet the growing demands from construction industry and also provide an economically viable alternative by reducing the cost of concrete production.
Presented are the formation of iron oxide layers on evaporator tubes in an actual fossil power plant operated under all volatile treatment (AVT) condition and an experimental simulation of iron oxide formation in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions. After actual operations for 12781 and 36326 hr in the power plant, two iron oxide layers of magnetite on the evaporator tubes were found: a continuous inner layer and a porous outer layer. The experimental simulation (i.e., artificial corrosion in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions at 100 ppm level for 100 hr) reveals that ferrous ions turn the continuous inner oxide layer on tube metal to cracks and pores, while ferric ions facilitate the production of porous outer oxide layer consisting of large crystallites. Based on a comparison of the oxide layers produced in the experimental simulation with those observed on the actually used tubes, we propose possible routes for oxid layer formation schematically. In addition, the limits of the proposed corrosion routes are discussed in detail.

High purity hydrogen, 97-99 vol.%, with CO at just ppm levels was obtained in a fixed bed of iron oxide employing the steam-iron cycle operation with reduction at 823K and oxidation in a steam-$N_2$ mixture at 773K TGA experiments indicated that temperature of the reduction step as well as its duration are important for preventing carbon build-up in iron and the intrusion of $CO_2$ into the hydrogen product. At a reduction temperature of 823K, oxide reduction by $H_2$ was considerably faster than reduction by CO. If the length of the reduction step exceeds optimal value, low levels of methane gas appeared in the off-gas. Furthermore, with longer durations of the reduction step and CO levels in the reducing gas greater than 10 vol.%, carbidization of the iron and/or carbon deposition in the bed exhibited the increasing pressure drop over the bed, eventually rendering the reactor inoperable. Reduction using a reducing gas containing 10 vol.% CO and a optimal reduction duration gave constant $H_2$ flow rates and off-gas composition over 10 redox reaction cycles.

This paper deals with the survey of domestic hydrogen production, consumption, and distribution. The amount of domestic hydrogen production and consumption has not been identified, and we survey the amount of domestic hydrogen production and consumption by industries. The hydrogen production industries are classified into the oil industry, the petrochemical industry, the chemical industry, and the other industry. In 2004, the amount of domestic hydrogen production was 972,601 ton, which corresponded to 1.9% of the global hydrogen production. The oil industry produced 635,683 ton(65.4%), the petrochemical industry produced 241,970 ton(24.9%), the chemical industry produced 66,250 ton(6.8%), the other industry produced 28,698 ton(2.9%). The hydrogen consumptions of corresponding industries were close to the hydrogen productions of industries except that of the other industry. Most hydrogen was used as non-energy for raw materials and hydrogen additions to the process. Only 122,743 ton(12.6%) of domestic hydrogen was used as energy for heating boilers. In 2004, 47,948 ton of domestic hydrogen was distributed. The market shares of pipeline, tube trailers and cylinders were 84.4% and 15.6%, respectively. The purity of 31,848 ton(66.4%) of the distributed hydrogen was 99.99%, and 16,100 ton(33.6%) was greater than or equal to 99.999%. Besides domestic hydrogen, we also identify the byproduct gases which contain hydrogen. The iron industry produces COG( coke oven gas), BFG(blast furnace gas), and LDG(Lintz Donawitz converter gas) that contain hydrogen. In 2004, byproduct gases of the iron industry contained 355,000 ton of hydrogen.

This study was conducted to observe antioxidant enzyme activity, iron content and lipid oxidation of Korean native chickens and other poultry. The breast and thigh meat of three Korean native chicken breeds including Woorimatdak, Hyunin black and Yeonsan ogye, and three commercial poultry breeds including the broiler, White Leghorn and Pekin duck (Anasplatyrhyncos domesticus) were studied. The analyses of the antioxidant enzymes activity, iron content and lipid oxidation were performed in raw and cooked samples. The activity of catalase (CAT) in the thigh meat was higher than that of the breast meat of three Korean native chickens and the broiler, respectively. The activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the uncooked thigh meat of three Korean native chickens was higher than that of the breasts. The breast meat of Woorimatdak and Pekin duck had higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity than the others, while only the thigh meat of Pekin duck had the highest activity. Cooking inactivated CAT and decreased the activity of GPx and SOD. The thigh meat of Woorimatdak, White Leghorn, Yeonsan ogye and Hyunin black contained more total iron than the breast meat of those breeds. The heme-iron lost during cooking ranged from 3.2% to 14.8%. It is noted that the thigh meat had higher thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values than the breast in all chicken breeds. Though Woorimatdak showed higher antioxidant enzyme activity and lower released-iron percentage among Korean native chickens, no differences were found on lipid oxidation. We confirm that the dark meat of poultry exhibited higher antioxidant enzyme activity and contained more iron than the white meat.

The growth and immune responses to endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge ( $20{\mu}g/kg$) of piglets with and without a iron dextran injection (Fe, 200 mg/head) two days after birth are compared. Sixty-four newborn piglets from eight litters were allocated randomly to one of four treatments. The control received no iron dextran and only saline (Sal) injection on the second and fifteenth day after birth (Sal-Sal). The remaining three groups received Fe-Sal, Sal-LPS, Fe-LPS treatments respectively. On fifteen days of age, blood samples of piglets were taken at 0 h, 1 h, 2 h and 4 d after saline or LPS injection to determine immune functions and blood characteristics. The trial terminated when the pig reached 56 days and the average daily gain of piglets was then measured. Daily gain, serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration and red blood cell counts did not vary significantly among the four groups at any measuring times. Serum tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$) concentration increased sharply 1 h after LPS injection. However, iron injection did not change TNF-${\alpha}$ concentration responds to LPS injection. White blood cell counts of two LPS injection groups were significantly lowered 1 h following the injection. In contrast, serum lactoferrin concentration had increased significantly 1 and 2 h postinjection. Furthermore, iron injection produced no further effects on these two criteria. Iron injection increased the hemoglobin (Hb) concentration of piglets at any measuring time, and LPS injection lowered Hb concentration. In conclusion, a 200 mg/head of iron dextran injection on the second day after birth increased Hb concentration, had no detrimental effect on the immune responses and growth of piglets. Moreover, if creep feed (175 mg Fe/kg feed) is provided from d 7 after birth, the Fe-injection does not contribute to overall performance of piglets and may not be a necessity in practice.
An approximately 10-fold higher level of adherence of Salmonella typhimurium strain TML to Int-407 cells was observed with organisms grown in Luria broth or in high-iron containing medium than those grown in low-iron containing medium. Iron specifically enhanced adherence, while other cations such as calcium, cobalt, copper, potassium, magnesium and manganese did not. It was suggested that iron did not act as a passive ligand - probably it stimulated production of bacterial factors necessary for adherence. A similar pattern of iron modulation of adhesiveness was also seen in Salmonella mutants with single or different combinations of multiple mutations in genes encoding the mannose sensitive hemagglutinin (type 1 fimbriae), mannose resistant hemagglutinin and flagellum. The adhesiveness of an isogenic fur mutant was modulated by iron in a manner similar to the wild-type strain, suggesting that iron modulation of adherence is independent of the fur gene product.
In this study, the carbon monoxide (CO)-fermenting acetogen, Clostridium sp. AWRP was subjected to chemical mutagenesis with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NTG) to generate a CO-resistant mutant. Among the 26 colonies obtained, the highest alcohol production was observed in one isolate, named C1. Compared to the wild-type strain, the C1 strain exhibited 1.5- and 3.4-fold higher CO consumption rate and alcohol selectivity, respectively. The total CO consumption of strain C1 could be further enhanced by increasing the content of metal ions, such as nickel and iron. The highest ethanol titer (5.7 g/l) was achieved by 5-fold increase in the iron concentration.

Recently, a wide range of industrial production area has a competitive advantage through cost reduction. Moreover with the development of industrial technology, base material and cutting tool help the machining technology. But most of the machining enterprises have not hold the R&D facilities and human resources. This mainly disturbs the industrial development and th increase of production efficiency. Especially in the interrupted machining process, it showed different behavior with continuous machining process. So it needs to research and develop the tool life and tool wear mechanism analysis.
Effects of Ti on damping capacity and mechanical properties are investigated in hot rolled Fe-17%Mn alloy. The existing damping alloy with Fe-Mn binary system was limited the use by high production cost, however in case of using scrap iron instead of pure iron although the content of carbon is higher it is possible to be applied wider field especially construction items because the production cost is lower. However, the excellent specific damping capacity is dropped due to the high content of carbon, we developed advanced type of damping alloy included Ti. TiC is formed with added Ti and it holds the specific damping capacity similar to existing damping alloy. The effect of Ti on damping capacity is found to be beneficial in carbon-containing alloy, which is attributed to the depletion of carbon solute due to the formation of TiC.
