  • In general, organic electrochromic (EC) materials have been known to be electrochemically unstable during the ionic exchange process. One effective method to realize stable EC materials is incorporating graphene derivatives in the polymer matrix, by using the strong interaction between graphene derivatives and polymer. However, previous studies are limited graphene derivatives. In this study, we developed a polymer-graphene derivative complex with the chemical assistance of a surfactant (octadecylamine, ODA). Surfactant-assisted graphene oxide (GO-ODA) was introduced as a protective layer on the electrochromic poly (3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) films by the Langmuir-Schaefer method. The deposition of GO-ODA protective layer with high coverage was confirmed by atomic force microscopy. The strong interactions between GO-ODA and P3HT were examined with UV-Vis spectrophotometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical and electrochromic investigations revealed that the GO-ODA layer greatly improved the long-term cyclability of the P3HT film. These findings imply that the GO-ODA complex has a significant role in creating stable EC cycling, due to its strong interaction with the P3HT film.

비이온성 및 양쪽 이온성 계면활성제 첨가가 반추위 혼합 미생물의 성장과 볏짚의 in vitro 소화에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Non-ionic or Zwitterionic Surfactant on in vitro Digestibility of Rice Straw and Growth of Rumen Mixed Microorganisms.)

  • 본 연구는 반추위 미생물 발효에 있어서 계면활성제의 이온성 여부가 발효시간별 in vitro 건물소화율, 미생물 성장량, pH 변화, Cas 발생량 및 SEM에 의한 미생물 부착 양상을 조사하기 위해 수행되었다. 1 mm 입자도의 볏짚을 기질로 하여 Holstein 젖소 위액을 이용한 Dehority's artificial medium에 대조구를 비롯하여 비이온성 계면활성제(NIS)로서 시판되고 있는 Tween 80과 SOLFA-850 2종류, 그리고 양쪽(+/-) 이온성 계면활성제(ZIS)로서 3-(Dodecyldimethylammonio) propanesulfanate (DDAP) 1 종류를 이용하여 각각 0.05% 및 0.1% 수준으로 첨가함으로써 총 7처리를 두었다. 발효시간은 6, 12, 24, 48 및 72시간으로 설정하여 각 처리 당 3반복으로 시험을 수행하였다. In vitro 건물 소화율은 NIS인 Tween 80 첨가구에서 48시간 및 72시간 발효 시, 타 처리구에 비해 유의적(P<0.05)으로 높았으나, ZIS인 DDAP 첨가구는 발효 24시간이후 부터 대조구보다도 건물소화율이 낮게 나타났다(P< 0.05). 가스 발생량은 NIS 두 처리구 모두, 대조구나 ZIS 처리구보다 유의적(P<0.05)으로 많았으며, 발효시간의 경과함에 따라 증가하였다. 미생물 성장량은 NIS인 Tween 80 첨가구에서 가장 많았고, 다음으로 SOLFA 850 첨가구 순이었으며, ZIS인 DDAP 첨가구는 대조구보다도 적었다(P<0.05). 전자현미경으로 관찰한 미생물 부착 양상에서 NIS 첨가구는 무처리구에 비해 미생물 군집이 현저히 많았으나 ZIS첨가구는 오히려 적은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 양쪽(+/-) 이온성 계면활성제는 반추위 발효 작용과 미생물 성장에 긍정적인 효과가 없는 것으로 사료된다.

반연속식 노말브틸-아크릴레이트/메틸메타-아크릴레이트 유화중합(1) : 폴리머 라텍스의 수율과 입자크기에 관한 계면활성제 종류의 영향 (Effect of Surfactant Type on the Particle Size and Yield in Semi-Continuous Emulsion Polymerization of n-Butyl Acrylate/Methyl Metacrylate)

  • 본 연구는 모노머로 메틸메타 아크릴레이트와 노말부틸 아크릴레이트를 사용하여 수용액상에서 반연속식 유화중합을 실시하여 안정성이 우수한 폴리머 시멘트용 아크릴계 폴리머 에멀젼을 제조하기 위해 최종 폴리머 에멀젼의 평균 입자크기 및 농도에 관한 계면활성제의 영향을 고찰하였다. 실험결과, 사용한 비이온 계면활성제에 관한 폴리머 에멀젼의 농도는 LE-50, NP-50 > CE-50, Tween 20 > TX-405 > Brij 35 순으로 최종 폴리머 응석에 기인하여 낮아졌으며, 평균 입자크기도 작아지는 경향을 나타내었다. 또한 LE형과 NP형 비이온 계면활성제는 친수성 체인의 길이(n)가 증가할 수 록 응석의 발생이 거의 없는 안정한 폴리머 에멀젼을 얻을 수 있었으며, n = 30이상의 체인에서 평균입자크기는 250 - 320 nm, 폴리머 농도는 수용액 기준으로 40 %를 얻을 수 있었다. 반응초기에 반응기에 투입 (Initial reactor charge)한 계면활성제 종류의 영향은 음이온 계면활성제인 SDS를 사용한 경우에는 사용량에 무관하게 폴리머 에멀젼의 농도는 거의 일정하였으나, 양이온 계면활성제인 CTAB와 반응형 계면활성제인 HN-100의 경우에는 폴리머 에멀젼 농도가 낮아지는 경향을 나타내었다. 반면에 평균 입자크기는 SDS < CTAB < HN-100 순으로 커지는 경향이었다.

Effects of Non-ionic Surfactant Supplementation on Ruminal Fermentation, Nutrient Digestibility and Performance of Beef Steers Fed High-roughage Diets

  • Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of non-ionic surfactant (NIS) supplementation on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility and performance of beef steers fed high-roughage diets. The objective of experiment 1 was to investigate the effects of NIS supplementation on in vitro ruminal fermentation of cultures administered with corn and barley as grain substrate and rice straw and timothy hay as roughage substrate. The in vivo ruminal fermentation, nitrogen balance and digestibility of nutrients were also examined with steers fed a high-roughage diet in experiment 2. The aim of experiment 3 was to determine the responses to NIS of growing steers fed a high-roughage diet. In experiment 1, ammonia nitrogen concentration for NIS supplementation was higher (p<0.05) than for the control with all substrates. However, concentrations of total volatile fatty acid (VFA), acetate, butyrate and valerate of the incubated roughage substrates, rice straw and timothy hay, were higher (p<0.05) for NIS supplementation than for the control whereas VFA concentrations in the cultures of corn and barley were unaffected. These results indicated that effects of NIS on ruminal fermentation are diet dependent, specifically on roughage sources. In experiment 2, ruminal pH of steers supplemented with NIS was lower (p<0.05) than the control. Ruminal concentrations of ammonia nitrogen, acetate, total VFA and urinary concentrations of purine derivatives were increased (p<0.05) by NIS supplementation. In experiment 3, supplementation of NIS increased (p<0.05) intakes of total feed and corn silage, average daily gain, and feed efficiency of growing steers although they varied depending on supplementation level. Due to the roughage-specific feature of NIS effects, NIS appears to enhance ruminal fermentation of fibrous parts of feeds and, consequently, performance of steers fed a high-roughage diet.

Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Functionalized with PS via Emulsion Polymerization

  • This study demonstrated the in-situ functionalization with polymers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) via emulsion polymerization. Polystyrene-functionalized MWNTs were prepared in an aqueous solution containing styrene monomer, non-ionic surfactant and a cationic coupling agent ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trime-thylammonium chloride (MATMAC)). This process produced an interesting morphology in which the MWNTs, consisting of bead-string shapes or MWNTs embedded in the beads, when polymer beads were sufficiently large, produced nanohybrid material. This morphology was attributed to the interaction between the cationic coupling agent and the nanotube surface which induced polymerization within the hemimicellar or hemicylindrical structures of surfactant micelles on the surface of the nanotubes. In a solution containing MATMAC alone without surfactant, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were not well-dispersed, and in a solution containing only surfactant without MATMAC, polymeric beads were synthesized in isolation from CNTs and continued to exist separately. The incorporation of MATMAC and surfactant together enabled large amounts of CNTs (> 0.05 wt%) to be well-dispersed in water and very effectively encapsulated by polymer chains. This method could be applied to other well-dispersed CNT solutions containing amphiphilic molecules, regardless of the type (i.e., anionic, cationic or nonionic). In this way, the solubility and dispersion of nanotubes could be increased in a solvent or polymer matrix. By enhancing the interfacial adhesion, this method might also contribute to the improved dispersion of nanotubes in a polymer matrix and thus the creation of superior polymer nanocomposites.

프로테아제의 오염 세정 효과 (The Effect of Proteases on Contamination Removal)

  • Four different subtilisins of protease were investigated to see their effects on the cleaning activity. The cleaning solution was formulated with various non-ionic surfactants and other additives such as propylene glycol, triethanolamine, pH balancer etc. to evaluate their effect on enzyme activity as well. Evaluation of formulated cleaning solution was carried under K0120 using pre-soiled textiles from EMPA. The results showed that the cleaning activity on soil removal was not severly influenced by surfactant but the enzyme mostly. In addition, the activity of enzymes was not much affected by the type of surfactants as long as the surfactants were non-ionic. Liquinase among the four enzymes used in this study showed the best performance on soil removal, especially blood stain.

재조합효모 배양에서 비이온성 계면활성제가 외래 Glucoamylase 생산 및 분비에 미치는 영향

  • The effects of non-ionic surfactants (Triton X-100 and Tween 80) on cloned glucoamylase production and secretion in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture were studied. Even though the extracellular glucoamylase activity was increased by addition of Tween 80 due to the increase of the cell mass, Tween 80 did not play a role in the increase of glucoamylase secretion. On the addition of Triton X-100 addition, the secretion efficiency was increased while the cell growth was inhibited. Triton X-100 was added to the culture broth after 24 hr of culture to minimize the inhibition of the cell growth, and consequently the glucoamylase activity in the culture broth was increased by 12%.

  • The capacity of micelle formation between astaxanthin and various surfactants was compared. Tween 20 was identified the most suitable surfactant in terms of astaxanthin extraction capacity. The ethylene oxide group of Tween 20 was identified as the most significant factor to increase the HLB value that determined the extraction capacity. The effect of micelle formation condition, such as molar ratio of astaxanthin and Tween 20, pH and ionic strength was also investigated. pH and ionic strength showed no significant effects. Antioxidant activity of astaxanthin was twice of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ and 4 times of ${\beta} -carotene$. Crude astaxanthin extract from the yeast cell seemed to be less degraded than pure astaxanthin by air and light exposure, probably because of the presence of other carotenoids and lipids. Under the optimal conditions, the molar ratio of micelle formed was found to be 1 : 12 for astaxanthin : Tween 20.

Binding Set Analysis for Interaction of Human Serum Albumin with Cethyl Trimethylammonium Bromide

  • The binding of cethyl trimethylammonium bromide, (CTAB) with human serum albumin (HSA) has been investigated at 5 mM phosphate buffer pH 7.0, 27 $^{\circ}C$ and various ionic strength using ion selective membrane electrodes. This method is faster and much more accurate than equilibrium dialysis technique, so provides sufficient and accurate data for binding data analysis. A novel and simple method was introduced for resolution and characterization of binding sets on basis of binding capacity concept. The values of Hill binding parameters were estimated for each set and used for calculation of intrinsic binding affinity. The results interpreted on basis of nature of forces which interfered in the interaction and represent the existence of three and two binding sets for binding of CTAB at $10^{-4}$ and $10^{-3}$ M of NaBr, respectively.

Fluorescence and Laser Light Scattering Studies of Modified Poly(ethylene-co-methylacrylate0 Ionomers on the Formation of Stable Colloidal Nanoparticles in Aqueous Solution

  • Fluorescence and dynamic light scattering measurements were applied to the study of formation and structure of aggregated colloidal particles in modified poly(ethylene-co-methylacrylate) ionomers in aqueous solution. Both 8-anillino-l-naphthalene-sulfonic acid (ANS) and pyrene were used as fluorescence probe to obtain the information on the structure of particle surface and inside, respectively. Three different ionomers used in this study started to aggregate at very dilute concentration, 3-8 x 10-6 g/mL. In this study, we demonstrate that the polyethylene ionomers can form stable nanoparticles. The hydrophobic core made of the polyethylene backbone chains is stabilized by the ionic groups on the particle surface. Such a formed stable nanoparticles have a relatively narrow size distribution with an average radius in the range of 27-48 nm, depending on the kind of ionic groups. Once the stable particles are formed, the particle size distributions were nearly constant. This study shows another way to prepare surfactant-free polyethylene nanoparticles.
