  • The ion exchange capacity of HDBPDA ion exchanger, {(4,5) : (13,14)-dibenzo-6,9,12-trioxa-3,15,21-triazabicyclo[15.3.l]heneicosa-(1,17,19)(18,20,21) triene ion exchanger: HDBPDA ion exchanger} was 3.8 meq/g. The distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions in water and the various concentration of hydrochloric acid were determined. Concentration of hydrochloric acid have almost not influenced on the distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions, but generally, the distribution coefficient was slightly increased with decrease of concentration of hydrochloric acid. The distribution coefficients of metal ions in water are larger than those of various hydrochloric acid concentrations. Also, alkali and alkaline earth metal ions are separated by column ion exchange chromatography using HDBPDA ion exchange with water as eluent. The distribution coefficents of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions were increased with increase of ionic radii of metal ions.

  • Adsorption behavior of metal elements onto soil minerals such as illite, halloysite. zeolite(clinoptilolite). and goethite was comparatively investigated at $25^{\circ}C$ using pollutant water collected from a gold-bearing metal mine. Speciation of solutions reacted was determined by WATEQ4F program, indicating that most of metal ions exist as free ions and that there is little difference in chemical species and their relative abundances between initial soultion and reacted solutions. The experimental data exhibit that the adsorption extent of elements varies depending on mineral types and reaction time. The adsorption process practically took place within one hour, with Fe and As significantly removed from solutions. On the whole, halloysite is regarded as the most effective adsorbent among minerals used in the experiment. Adsorption properties of alkali elements do not consistent with a manner predicted from hydrated ionic radii.

  • The conductances of sodium, potassium, ammonium, tetramethylammonium, and tetraethylammonium iodides, picrates(Pic) of sodium and potassium, and tetrabutylammonium tetraphenyl-boride have been measured in ethylene carbonate-acetone mixtures at $25{\circ}C$. The limiting equivalent conductances of the electolytes were computed by Fuoss-Kraus equation and the order was $(C_4H_9)_4NB(ph)_4 at any composition of the mixtures. The dissociation constants of the salts showed that the mixtures are good ionizing solvents for the salts. The order of limiting ionic equivalent conductance, $Na^+, is consistent with exactly the reverse order found for solvation number. Effective solvated radii calibrated by the Nightingale method showed that picrate ion seems to be unsolvated and that iodide ion seems to be solvated to some extent in the mixtures.

  • The crystal structure and magnetic properties of a new solid solution type ferrite $(Fe_2O_3)_5-(Al_2O_3)_{3.4}-(Ga_2O_3)_{0.6}-SiO$ were investigated using X-ray diffraction and M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. The results of the X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that the crystal structure of the sample appears to be a cubic spinel type structure. The lattice constant (a = 8.317 ${\AA}$) decreases slightly with the substitution of $Ga_2O_3$ even though the ionic radii of the Ga ions are larger than that of the Al ions. The results can be attributed to a higher degree of covalency in the Ga-O bonds than in the Al-O and Fe-O bonds, which can also be explained using the observed M$\"{o}$ssbauer parameters, which are the magnetic hyperfine field, isomer shift, and quadrupole splitting. The drastic change in the magnetic structure according to the Ga ion substitution in the $ (Fe_2O_3)_5(Al_2O_3)_{4-x}(Ga_2O_3)_xSiO$ system and the low temperature variation have been studied through a M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. The M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectrum at room temperature shows the superpositions of two Zeeman patterns and a strong doublet. It shows significant departures from the prototypical ferrite and is comparable with the diluted ferrite. The doublet of spectrum at room temperature appears to originate from superparamagnetic clusters and also the asymmetry of the doublet appears to be caused by the preferred orientation of the crystallites. The M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectra below room temperature show various complicated patterns, which can be explained by the freezing of the superparamagnetic clusters. On cooling, the magnetic states of the sample were various and multi critical.

  • Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputliring method in order to clarify the anneal condition and doping effect on loakage current Nb and Al were selected as electron donor and acceptor dopants respectively, in the BST films because they have been known to have nearly same ionic radii as Ti and thought to substitute Ti sites to influence the charge carrier and the acceptor state adjacent to the gram boundary. BST thin films prepared in-situ at elevated temperature showed selatively high leakage current density and low breakdown voltage. In order to achieve smooth surface and to improve electrical properties, BST thin films were deposited at room temperature and annealed at elevated temperature. Post-annealed BST thin films showed smoother surface morphology and lower leakage current density than in-situ prepared thin films. The leakage current density of Al doped thin films was measured to be around 10-8A/cm2, which is much lower than those of undoped and Nb doped BST films. The result clearly demonstrates that higher Schottky barrier and lower mobile charge carrier concentration achieved by annealing in the oxygen atmosphere and by Al doping are desirable for reducing leakage current density in BST thin films.

  • Transition metal ions doped $TiO_2$ nanostructured powders were prepared with simply heating aqueous $TiOCl_2$ solutions, contained various metal ions (Ni, Al, Fe, Zr, and Nb) of 1.47 mol% added as metal-chlorides, at $100^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs by homogeneous precipitation process under suppressing conditions of water vaporization. The characterizations for prepared $TiO_2$ powders were carried out to observe doping of metal ions, their concentrations and microstructures using XRD, UV-VIS (DRS), XPS, SEM, TEM and ICP. Also, photo-oxidative abilities were evaluated by decomposition of 4-chlorophenol (4CP) under ultraviolet light irradiations. No secondary oxide phases were formed in all the $VTiO_2$ powders, showing doping with various transition metal ions. When adding ions ($Ni^{2+}$ or$ Al^{3+ }$ and $Zr^{4+}$ ) having valance states or ionic radii greatly different from those of $Ti^{4+}$ , the $TiO_2$ powders of mixed anatase and rutile phases were formed, whereas in the case of additions of $^Fe{3+ }$ and $Nb^{ 5+}$ as well as no addition of metal ion the powders with pure rutile phase alone were formed. Among the prepared $TiO_2$ powders, Ni$^{2+}$ doped $TiO_2$ powders, containing a small amount of anatase phase, showed excellent photo-oxidative ability in 4CP decomposition because of relative decreases in electron-hole recombination and poisoning of $TiO_2$ surface during the photoreaction.n.

  • TiO₂nanoparticles were synthesized using the metallorganic chemical vapor deposition process. Particles with and without metal ion dopants were obtained. X-ray photoelectron and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic measurements confirmed the stoichiometry of the TiO₂nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction patterns showed a polycrystalline anatase structure of TiO₂. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that these particles are of nanoscale dimensions. Exact particle size and size distribution analyses were carried out by dynamic light scattering. The average particle size was determined to be 22 nm. The nanosize particles provided large surface area for photocatalysis and a large number of free surface-charge carriers, which are crucial for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. To improve the photocatalytic activity, metal ions, including transition metal ions $(Pd^{2+},\;Pt^{4+},\;Fe^{3+})$ and lanthanide ion $(Nd^{3+})$ were added to pure TiO₂nanoparticles. The effects of dopants on photocatalytic kinetics were investigated by the degradation of 2-chlorophenol under an ultraviolet light source. The results showed that the TiO₂nanoparticles with the metal ion dopants have higher photocatalytic activity than undoped TiO₂. The $Nd^{3+}$ ion of these dopant metal ions showed the highest catalytic activity. The difference in the photocatalytic activity with different dopants is related to the different ionic radii of the dopants.

  • Crystal structure of $Ba_5-5X$Y$_10/3$Nb$_10$O$_30$ was tried to determine by Rietveld analysis using powder X-ray diffraction data. This compound has tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) structure with general formula, (Al)$_2$(A2)$_4$(B1)$_2$(B2)$_8$(O1)$_8$(O2)$_8$(O3)$_4$(O4)$_2$(O5)$_4$(O6)$_4$. However, it was difficult to determine the distribution of Ba and Y in Al and A2 sites by the analysis only. Combination of Rietveld analysis and site potentials calculation as well as lattice energy calculations helped to determine the distribution. As the result, it was clarified that $Ba^2+$ cations occupy A2 (pentagonal tunnel site) and $Y^3+$ cations occupy Al (cubic site). The distribution of cations at each site coincides with the distribution estimated by the difference of ionic radii. This supports the formation condition of TTB which was proposed in our previous report. $Ba_5-5X$Y$_10X/3$Nb$_10$O$_30$ shows ferroelectric characteristics. In this compound, remanent polarization decreases slightly with the composition X. On the other hand, the result of crystal structure determination reveals that atomic positions along c-axis for A1, A2, B1 and B2 cations are also decreased with the composition X. This would suggest that the dependence of remanent polarization on composition X is derived by the dependence of atomic coordinates on composition X.

  • The perovskites in the $LaAlO_3-BaZrO_3$ system (i.e., $(1-x)LaAlO_3-xBaZrO_3$ were fabricated by a solid state reaction and their dielectric properties were investigated. For the compositions of x=0.1~0.9, the mixture of $LaAlO_3$ with a rhombohedral structure and $BaZrO_3$ with a cubic was observed when the sintering was conducted at $1500^{\circ}C$, indicating that the solubility of constituent elements was very low and a narrow solid solution region might exist. The large difference of ionic radii between $La^{3+}$ ion (0.136nm, C.N.=12) and $Ba^{2+}$ ion (0.161nm) or $Al^{3+}$ ion (0.0535nm, C.N.=6) and $Zr^{4+}$ ion (0.072nm) might hinder the mutual substitution. Within the compositions of x=0~0.7, the dielectric constant of the mixture increased with the amount of $BaZrO_3$, i.e., x value, which was in good agreement with the logarithmic mixing rule (In $_{r,i}={\Sigma}v_iln\;_{r,i}$). The increase in $BaZrO_3$ doping decreased $Q{\times}f$ value significantly due to the low $Q{\times}f$ value of $BaZrO_3$ itself, a poor microstructure of the mixture with an increased grain boundary area per volume, and defects in the cation and oxygen sub-lattices which were respectively caused by the evaporation of barium during the sintering process and the substitution of Ba on La-site or Al on Zr-site.

  • The structure of $CS_{7.3}Ag_{4.7}Si_{12}Al_{12}O_{48}$, vacuum dehydrated zeolite A with all Na+ ions replaced by $Cs^+$ and $Ag^+$ as indicated, has been determined by single-crystal x-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group, Pm3m (a = 12.282 (1) ${\AA}$). The structure was refined to the final error indices $R_1$$R_2$ (weighted) = 0.099 using 347 independent reflections for whind intlch $I_0\;>\;3{\sigma}(I_0)$. Although deydration occurred at $360^{\circ}C$, no silver atoms or clusters have been observed. The 8-ring sites are occupied only by $Cs^+$ ion, and the 4-ring sites only by a single $Ag^+$ ion. The 6-ring sites contain $Ag^+$ and $Cs^+$ ions with $Ag^+$ nearly in 6-ring planes and $Cs^+$ well off them, one on the sodalite unit side. With regard to the 6-rings, the structure can be represented as a superposition of two types of unit cells: about 70 % have $4Ag^+$ and $4Cs^+$ ions, and the remaining 30 % have $3Ag^+$ and $5Cs^+$. In all unit cells, $3Cs^+$ ions lie at the centers of the 8-rings at sites of D4h symmetry; these ions are approximately 0.3 ${\AA}$ further from their nearest framework-oxygen neighbors than the sum of the appropriate ionic radii would indicate. To minimize electrostatic repulsions, the $Cs^+$ ions at Cs(1) are not likely to occupy adjacent 6-rings in the large cavity; they are likely to be tetrahedrally arranged when there are 4.
