Fast Switching of Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystals Display Based on a High-K Yttrium Oxide (고유전율 Yttrium Oxide을 이용한 네마틱 액정 디스플레이의 고속 응답 전기-광학 특성)

  • We investigated a solution-derived $Y_2O_3$ film treated by ion beam (IB) irradiation as a liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. With IB irradiation, homogeneous LC alignment was achieved irrespective of the annealing temperature. To verify the effect of IB irradiation, we conducted surface analyses such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As $Y_2O_3$ is a high-k material, the electro-optical properties of the twisted nematic (TN) cells were superior to those of conventional TN cells based on a rubbed polymer, with an LC rising time of 4.1ms and falling time of 2.9ms. The IB-irradiated $Y_2O_3$ is a good alternative as an alignment layer for fast-switching TN LC displays.

200 MeV Ag15+ ion beam irradiation induced modifications in spray deposited MoO3 thin films by fluence variation

  • Spray deposited Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) thin film of thickness nearly 379 nm were irradiated with 200 MeV Ag15+ ion beam at different fluences (Ø) of 5 ×1011, 1 × 1012, 5 × 1012 and 1 × 1013 ions/㎠. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the pristine film confirms orthorhombic structure and the crystallinity decreased after irradiation with the fluence of 5 × 1011 ions/㎠ due to irradiation induced defects and became amorphous at higher fluence. In pristine film, Raman modes at 665, 820, 996 cm-1 belong to Mo-O stretching, 286 cm-1 belong to Mo-O bending mode and those below 200 cm-1 are associated with lattice modes. Raman peak intensities decreased upon irradiation and vanished completely for the ion fluence of 5 ×1012 ions/㎠. The percentage of optical transmittance of pristine film was nearly 40%, while for irradiated films it decreased significantly. Red shift was observed for both the direct and indirect band gaps. The pristine film surface had densely packed rod like structures with relatively less porosity. Surface roughness decreased significantly after irradiation. The electrical transport properties were also studied for both the pristine and irradiated films by Hall effect. The results are discussed.

  • The alignment effect of liquid crystals on Polyimide surfaces bombarded by a low energy argon ion beam and the effect of pretilt angle on viewing characteristics of an LCD cell are discussed. The unidirectional out-of-plane liquid crystal tilt angle is varied with various ion beam irradiation conditions, such as the energy of the incident ions, the angle of incidence and exposure time. As low pretilt angle is profitable for wider viewing property, LCD cell with ion beam modified Polyimide layer show wider viewing characteristics.

  • The bi-functional ion exchangers, SAPP-g-(AN/St) were synthesized with mixed vinyl monomers(acrylonitrile and styrene) onto PP fabric by the pre-irradiation grafting with E-beam and its subsequent amidoximination and sulfonation. The degree of grafting of PP-g-(AN/St) was increased with decreasing acrylonitrile composition in the mixed monomers. The water uptake of copolymers increased with decreasing in the amidoxime ratio in the copolymers and increased by sulfonation, but decreased by amidoximation. The $UO_2^{2+}$ adsorption capacity of SPP-g-St, APP-g-AN, and SAPP-g-(AN/St) were 12.4, 34.0, and 38.0 mg/g, respectively and the optimum adsorption time is about 50 hrs. As a result of uranium adsorption, the synthesized ion exchanger, which we obtained have also good affinity toward the adsorption or chelating with $UO_2^{2+}$ ions.

  • Effects of heavy-ion beam$(^{20}Ne)$ irradiation on growth and DNA alteration of tobacco plants were investigated. Seed germination and plant height were decresed as the ion-beam intensity was increased. However, the bolting and flowering were promoted by the low intensities of 5 Gy to 10 Gy treatment. Out of the 100 primers screened, 59 primers generated 336 DNA fragments by RAPD analysis, and one specific DNA fragment that amplified in control but not in the ion-beam irradiated plants was observed. By AFLP analysis, DNA fragment difference related to the ion-beam treatment was not detected but observed among the plant bodys.

  • In order to remove $NO_3;^-$ ion from ground-water, fibrous ion -exchangers, APP-g-GMA, were synthesized by GMA grafting onto PP trunk polymer with E-beam accelerator for pre-irradiation. Their degrees of grafting and amination yield increased up to $60^{\circ}C$ and showed maximum values as 133%, 88%, respectively. And their swelling ratio and ion exchange capacity at the maximum values are 86%, 2.5 meq/g, respectively which was higher than commercial ion-exchangers such as IMAC HP555 and Amberlite IRA 400. Optimum adsorption condition of $NO_3;^-$ ion was measured at pH 5~6 and -Cl form of APP-g-GMA containing trimethylammonium group showed the highest adsorption capacity.

XPS STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF LOW-ENERGY ELECTRON IRRADIATION ON DNA DAMAGE BY Fe3+ ION

  • We have employed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique to examine the combined effects of low-energy electron (LEE) irradiation and $Fe^{3+}$ ion on DNA damage. pBR322 plasmid DNA extracted from E. coli ER2420 was used for preparing DNA-$Fe^{3+}$ sample. The C1s XPS spectra were scanned for LEE-irradiated and LEE-unirradiated samples and then curve-fitted. For the samples with LEE irradiation only or with Fe ion only, no significant changes from pure DNA samples were observed - a single effect of either $Fe^{3+}$ ion or LEE irradiation did not cause a significant damage. However, when these two components were combined, the DNA damage was increased quite significantly, compared to the sum of DNA damages caused by $Fe^{3+}$ ion and by LEE irradiation independently. This observation is consistent with our previous results [Radiat. Res. 177, 775 (2012)] which was done using gel-electrophoresis technique. Partial interpretation of the observed spectrum peaks was also attempted.

  • In this study, the advanced DuoPIGatron-type ion beam (IB) system was applied to inorganic thin film for aligning liquid crystal (LC). LC alignment on $Ta_2O_5$ via IB irradiation was embodied. As a result of IB irradiation, the homogeneously aligned liquid crystal display (LCD) on $Ta_2O_5$ was observed with low pretilt angles. The $Ta_2O_5$ were deposited on indium-tin-oxide coated Coming 1737 glass substrates by rf magnetron sputtering at $200^{\circ}C$. The deposition process resulted in forming very uniform thin film on glass substrates without any defects. To confirm the application of the inorganic alignment on modem display optical devices, we fabricated twisted nematic LCD and measured optical property and response time. As a result of the experiment, the electro optical characteristics of the LCD fabricated by using IB irradiation on $Ta_2O_5$ alignment layer were similar with the other LCD fabricated by using rubbing process.

  • In this study, we investigated the genetic variation in the general of monocot model plant (rice) in response to various ionizing irradiations including gamma-ray, ion beam and cosmic-ray. The non-irradiated and three irradiated (200 Gy of gamma-ray and 40 Gy of ion beam and cosmic-ray) plants were analyzed by AFLP technique using capillary electrophoresis with ABI3130xl genetic analyzer. The 29 primer combinations tested produced polymorphism results showing a total of 2,238 bands with fragments sizes ranged from 30 bp to 600 bp. The number of polymorphism generated by each primer combinations was varied significantly, ranging from 2 (M-CAC/E-ACG) to 158 (M-CAT/E-AGG) with an average of 77 bands. Polymorphic peaks were detected as 1,269 with an average of 44 per primer combinations. By UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method using Arithmetic clustering) analysis method, the clusters were divided into non-irradiated sample and three irradiated samples at a similarity coefficient of 0.41 and three irradiation samples was subdivided into cosmic-ray and two irradiation samples (200 Gy of gamma-ray and 40 Gy of ion beam) at similarity coefficient of 0.48. Similarity coefficient values ranged from 0.41 to 0.55.
