  • Dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) was examined as a counter-ion in the investigation of capacity factor and separation of aromatic carboxylic acids on alkyl-modified silica (ODS) column as a stationary phase by ion-pair chromatography on reversed-phase system. The capacity factor of samples was influenced by the several factors such as a concentration of counter-ion as well as kinds and concentration of electrolyte, concentration of methanol in mobile phase and kinds and position of functional group in sample molecule. Some mixtures of samples were able to be separated under optimum condition.

  • Glutamic acid can be crystallized inside cation exchange column when displacer NaOH concentration is high enough to concentrate displaced glutamic acid beyond its solubility limit. Resulting crystal layer of glutamic acid was moved with liquid phase through the column, and thus could be eluted from the column and recovered in fraction collector. For the purpose of enhancing crystal recovery, effects of operating parameters on the crystal formation were investigated. The increase in the degree of crosslinking of resin favored crystal recovery because of its low degree of swelling. Higher concentration of displacer NaOH was advantageous. If NaOH concentration is too high, however, crystal recovery was lowered due to the solubility-enhancing effects of high pH and ionic strength. The decrease of mobile phase flow rate enhanced crystal recovery because enough time to attain local equilibrium could be provided, but film diffusion would control the overall crystal formation with extremely low flow rate. Lower temperature reduced solubility of glutamic acid and thus favored crystal formation unless the rate of ion exchange was severely reduced. The ion exchange operated by displacement mode coupled with crystallization was advantageous in reducing the burden of further purification steps and in preventing purity-loss resulted from overlapping between adjacent bands.

  • Intracellular calcium is an important physiological factor in most cells, and ruthenium red and ryanodine play an important role as calcium modulators. Ruthenium red inhibits calcium-induced calcium release(CICR) from the intracellular calcium store. Ryanodine activates calcium release through ryanodine channel. The present experiment was performed to investigate the effects of two modulators on calcium ion metabolism and to determine their dose-dependency in oocyte and early embryo of mouse. Intracellular calcium ion concentration was measured in realtime by using confocal laser scanning microscope(CLSM) after loading of Fluo-3/AM in mouse oocytes and early embryos. Ruthenium red decreased intracellular calcium ion concentration in oocytes and early embryos at its high concentration(30, 300 $\mu$M). Ryanodine increased intracellular calcium ion concentration in oocytes and early embryos in low concentration(0.01 $\mu$M) but decreased that at higher concentrations(1, 10 $\mu$M). These results indicate that two modulators affected calcium ion metabolism in oocyte and early embryo of mouse, and their dose-dependency was different from somatic cell including myocytes.

  • Fundamental investigations have been carried out to find the applicability of manganese nodule as an adsorbent of nickel ion with an intention that nickel can be secured in manganese nodule along with the treatment of wastewater. The average content of manganese in nodules which used in the experiments was about 27%. The content of nickel in manganese nodules was observed to increase up to 4 times higher with comparison to its original value after adsorption. When the initial concentration of nickel ion in artificial wastewater was lower than 500 mg/L, its adsorbed amount on manganese nodule was shown to increase continuously. However, no more than about 82 mg/L of nickel was attained at higher initial nickel ion concentration than 500 mg/L. The adsorption of nickel ion was increased with temperature under experimental conditions and as the size of manganese nodule particles became smaller more nickel ion was adsorbed on adsorbent. Regarding the effect of pH, the adsorption of nickel ion was more hindered as the solution became acidic. Adsorption behavior of nickel ion on manganese nodule was found to follow the Freundlich model well and kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption reaction of nickel ion was second order. Thermodynamic parameters for the nickel ion adsorption were estimated on the basis of thermodynamic equations and they were in good agreement with experimental results.

  • Graft polymerization mechanism and rate of polymerization of MMA and MMA/4-VP onto cellulose fiber using Ce(IV) salt as an initiatior were investigated. It was shown that the concentration of Ce(IV) salt affected on the graft yield, graft efficiency, total conversion and the rate of graft polymerization. The graft yield and total cenversion for MMA grafted polymer were significantly higher than those for MMA/4-VP grafted polymer with variation of CAN concentration. In this system the oxidative termination by Ce(IV) salt was considered particularly in higher concentration Ce(IV) ion. The change in the mode of termination reactions with variation of CAN concentration made possible the presence of an optimum Ce(IV) ion concentration for maximum graft yield.

  • The Fenton reaction is often used to evaluate the chemical durability of polymer membranes of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC). However, due to the violent reaction between hydrogen peroxide and iron ions, it is difficult to compare experimental data because of low reproducibility. In this study, we tried to find the reaction conditions to improve the reproducibility of the durability test of the membrane by the Fenton reaction. The hydrogen peroxide concentration was fixed at 30%, the iron ion concentration, temperature, stirring speed, and sample size were varied, and the fluorine ion concentration of the Nafion polymer membrane deteriorated by radicals was measured. When the iron ion concentration was increased or the membrane sample size was increased, and the reaction temperature was increased to 80 ℃, the experimental deviation increased, so an iron ion concentration of 10 ppm, a temperature of 70 ℃, and a sample size of 0.5 ㎠ were suitable.

  • Dongchimi as a Korean traditional fermented food was studied for the possibility of developing into as an ion beverage. Reverse osmosis process was applied to the concentration of dongchimi juice in this study. Dongchimi was prepared at different concentrations of salt and fermentation temperatures. Mineral components of concentrated dongchimi juice were analyzed and compared with those of ion beverage products. The changes of sugar contents and mineral contents were studied depending on different fermentation temperatures, periods and salt concentration. The amounts of mineral components such as $K^{+},\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ were increased during fermentation but slightly decreased in the last period. It was found that the concentrated dongchimi juice could be used as an improved ion beverage in future, since the electrolytic dissociation components were much more in the concentrated dongchimi juice than those in the existing ion beverages.

  • B, P, and Cs ions were implanted with various parameters into silicon nitride layers prepared by LPCVD. In order to get the maximum impurity concentration at the silicon nitride surface, a high temperature oxide (HTO) buffer layers was deposited prior to the implantation. Alkali ion and pH sensing properties of the layers were investigated with an electrolyte-insulator-silicon (EIS) structure using high frequency capacitance-voltage (HF-CV) measurements. The ion sensing properties of implanted silicon nitrides were compared to those of as-deposited silicon nitride. Band Cs co-implanted silicon nitrides showed a pronounced difference in pH and alkali ion sensing properties compared to those of as-deposited silicon nitride. B or P implanted silicon nitrides in contrast showed similar ion sensitivities like those of as-deposited silicon nitride.

  • Oxepane high explosives substituted to explosive group such as azido, nitrato and hydrazino are investigated theoretically the acid catalyzed reaction using the semiempirical MINDO/3, MNDO and AM1 methods to use as the guidelines of high explosives. The nucleophilicity and basicity of oxepane high explosives can be explained by the value of negative charge on oxygen atom of oxepane and the reactivity in propagation step can be represented by the value of positive charge on carbon atom and low electrophile LUMO energy. It was known that carbenium ion was favorable due to the stable energy (19.507~32.101 Kcal/mol) between oxonium ion and carbenium ion in the process of cyclic oxonium ion of oxepane high explosives being converted to open carbenium ion in oxepane high explosives. The value of concentration of cyclic oxonium ion and open carbenium ion in equilibrium status was found to be a major determinant of mechanism, it was expected to react faster in the prepolymer propagation step in SN1 mechanism than in that of $S_N2$.

  • Heterogeneous ion exchange membranes were prepared by mixing polyethylene as matrix with bead and fibrous anionic ion exchangers at different mixing ratio. Generally, ion exchange capacities were increased with increasing the ratio of the fibrous ion exchanger content. The highest ion exchange capacity of the membrane was 1.86 meq/g at 30wt% IXF (ion exchange fiber) in the membrane. The water uptake, fixed ion concentration, and ion transport number of the membrane increased with increasing the content of the fibrous ion exchanger. However, the electrical resistivity of the membrane was decreased with increasing the content of the fibrous ion exchanger. The lowest electrical resistivity of 5$\Omega$/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was observed at 30 wt%of IXF.
