  • Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is one of the promising eco-friendly renewable energy technologies which can generate electricity from the concentration difference between seawater and freshwater by using ion-exchange membranes as a diaphragm. The ion-exchange membrane is a key component that determines the performance of RED, and must satisfy requirements such as low electrical resistance, high permselectivity, excellent durability, and low manufacturing cost. In this study, pore-filled anion-exchange membranes were fabricated using porous polymer substrates having various thicknesses and porosity, and the effects of ion-exchange polymer composition and membrane thickness on the power generation performance of RED were investigated. When the electrical resistance of the ion-exchange membrane is sufficiently low, it can be confirmed that the RED power generation performance is mainly influenced by the apparent permselectivity of the membrane. In addition, it was confirmed that the apparent permselectivity of the membranes can be improved through IEC, crosslinking degree, membrane thickness, surface modification, etc., and the optimum condition must be found in consideration of the trade-off relationship with electrical resistance.

  • The transfer of chloride ion across an anion exchange membrane (AEM) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectra. In CV experiment, when the size of the hole in membrane was much smaller than the distance between membrane holes, the Cl anion transfer showed steady state voltammetric behavior. Each hole in membrane can be regarded as a microelectrode and the membrane was equivalent to a microelectrode array in this condition. When the hole in membrane was large or the distance between membrane holes was small, the CV curve of the Cl anion transfer across membrane showed peak shape, which attributed to linear diffusion. In ac impedance measurement, the impedance spectrum of the membrane system was composed of two semicircles at low de bias, corresponding to the bulk characteristics of the membrane and the kinetic process of ion transfer, respectively. The bulk membrane resistance increases with increasing dc bias and only one semicircle was observed at higher dc bias. The parameters related to kinetic and membrane properties were discussed.

  • We prepared porous cation exchange membrane using polystyrene such as, EPS (expanded polystyrene), SAN (styrene acrylonitrile copolymer) and HIPS (high impact polystyrene). These three kind of polystyrene were sulfonated by acetyl sulfate to make sulfonated porous cation exchange membrane such as, SEPS (sulfonated expanded polystyrene), SSAN (sulfonated styrene acrylonitrile copolymer)and SHIPS (sulfonated high impact polystyrene). SEM was employed to validate porous structure of membrane, and IR spectroscopy was used to validate sulfonation rate of ion exchange membrane. As a results, ion exchange capacity was increased with an amount of sulfuric acid in reactants and cation exchange membrane showed the selectivity to a cation and showed the exclusivity to an anion.

  • The effect of anionic and cationic exchange polymer layer on the chronopotentiometry (CP) and current voltage curves (I-V) of charged composite membrane are investigated. Also, the ion transport near the interface between electrolyte and ionic exchange polymer membranes (anionic and cationic ones) and charged mosaic polymer composite membrane is studied. The results show that both anionic and cationic polymer exchange membranes exhibit lower voltage drop over range of applied current density and possess favorable industrial application potentials, especially at low KCl concentration. While the charged mosaic polymer composite membrane didn't show any current-voltage change, irrespective to the type and the concentration of used electrolyte. CP and I-V measurements are effectively used to give some fundamental understanding for ion transport behavior of ion exchange polymer membrane near the interlace.

  • In this study, we have established the optimum design condition of pore-filled anion-exchange membrane for all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). From the experimental results, it was proven that the membrane design factors that have the greatest influence on the charge-discharge performance of VRFB are the ion exchange capacity, the porosity of substrate film, and the crosslinking degree. That is, the ohmic loss and the crossover of active materials in VRFB were shown to be determined by the above factors. In addition, two methods, i.e. reducing the ion exchange capacity at low crosslinking degree and increasing the crosslinking degree at high ion exchange capacity, were investigated in the preparation of pore-filled anion-exchange membranes. As a result, it was found that optimizing the crosslinking degree at sufficiently high ion exchange capacity is more desirable to achieving high VRFB charge-discharge performances.

  • The study was evaluated and compared to commercial heterogeneous membrane in order to make cation exchange membrane set up the optimal preparing condition. The research findings show that ion exchange resin was added more than 40 wt% in order to show chemical properties of HPVDF higher than commercial heterogeneous membrane. But ion exchange resin was added less than 40 wt% in order to show mechanical properties of HPVDF higher than commercial heterogeneous membrane. According to conditions above, Electrical resistance was $1.83{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$, water uptake was 79%, ion exchange capacity was 1.60 meq/g, and burst strength was 0.97 MPa. Also The TDS remove efficiency was measured by approximately 40%.

  • In this study, the influence of different IEMs (ion exchange membranes) to performance of the hypochlorite electrolysis unit with Cl2 recovery stream was investigated. More specifically, Nafion 117-a representative cation exchange membrane (CEM)-and aminated polypheylene oxide (APPO)-an anion exchange membrane (AEM)-were installed in the hypochlorite electrolysis unit, and the performance and the energy efficiency of the units were evaluated and compared. Regardless of whether CEM (Nafion 117) or AEM (APPO) was installed, the rate of hypochlorite generation was increased (by up to 24.3% and 22.2% for Nafion 117 and APPO, respectively) compared with the unit without an IEM. On the other hand, the power efficiency and the optimum operation condition of hypochlorite production units seem to depend on the conductivity and stability of the installed IEM. As the result, between Nafion 117 and APPO, higher performance and efficiency were achieved with Nafion 117, due to excellent conductivity and stability of the membrane.

  • Heterogeneous anion exchange membranes were prepared by compression molding for the recovery of sulfate ion from waste water. The swelling ratio, transport number, and ion exchange capacity of the heterogeneous anion exchange membranes were increased and their electrical resistances were decreased as the amount of ion exchange resin content in the matrix was raised. The tensile strength of the heterogeneous anion exchange membrane was decreased with increasing the amount of ion exchange resin in the LLDPE. The tensile strength for the LDPE heterogeneous membrane containing 30 wt% anion exchange resin showed the highest value. The water content increased with increasing amount of ion exchange resin in the membrane. Moreover the highest transport number of the membrane was 0.86. The electrical resistance of LDPE matrix membrane with 50 wt% resin showed $46.5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$. Current efficiency of electrodialysis for sulfate ion showed the highest value at the current density of $125 mA/cm^2$ in 0.5 mol/L sulfuric acids solution.

  • We prepared heterogeneous ion exchange membranes (hetero-IEMs) for the application of membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI). Hetero-IEMs were fabricated by compressing the mixture of ion exchange resin powders and liner low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Characterization and MCDI desalination experiments were carried for the fabricated membranes. Electrical resistance of membrane decreased and water content increased with increasing the resin content in the hetero-IEMs. However, transport number indicating permselectivity of membrane was similar with that of commercial homogenesous ion exchange membrane. The results of MCDI desalination experiments showed that the adsorption amount for hetero-IEM was about 90% of that of homogeneous membrane due to the high electrical resistance of hetero-IEM. Although desalination performance of hetero-IEM decreased compared with homogeneous membrane, it was thought to be applicable to MCDI because of simple preparation and low price.

  • LDPE/polystyrene cation exchange membranes were prepared through a monomer-sorption method and UV radiation polymerization. The reaction behaviors in the preparation were investigated. The membranes prepared were characterized in terms of physical and electrochemical properties. The membranes exhibited reasonable properties for an ion-exchange membrane with weight gain (Wr) of above 0.3, electrical resistance of below 1.0 Ω $\textrm{cm}^2$ and ion-exchange capacity of 1.8 meq/g-dry membrane. DSC studies and FE-SEM image revealed the formation of a homogeneous membrane. Both the current-voltage and the chronopotentiometric curves of the membranes indicated that LDPE/polystyrene membranes can be properly used at a high current density, and the surface homogeneity of cation-exchange sites in the membrane was comparable to that in a commercial membrane.
