This paper considers the genetic algorithms(GAs) for the mixed model assembly line sequencing(MMALS) in which the objective is to minimize the overall line length. To apply the GAs to the MMALS, the representation, selection, genetic sequencing operators, and genetic parameters are studied. Especially, the existing sequencing binary operators such as partially map crossover(PMX), cycle crossover(CX), and order crossover (OX) are modified to be suitable for the MMALS, and a new sequencing binary operator called immediate successor relationship crossover (ISR) is introduced. These binary operators mentioned above and/or unary operators such as swap, insertion, inversion, displacement, and splice are compared to find operators which work well in the MMALS. Experimental results indicate that 1) among the binary operators ISR operator is the best, followed by the modified OX, and the modified PMX, with the modified CX being the worst, 2) among the unary operators inversion operator is the best, followed by displacement, swap, and insertion, with splice being the worst, and 3) in general, the unary operators perform better than the binary operators for the MMALS.
Land surface temperature (LST) is a key environmental variable in a wide range of applications, such as weather, climate, hydrology, and ecology. However, LST is one of the most difficult surface variables to observe regularly due to the strong spatio-temporal variations. So, we have developed the LST retrieval algorithm from COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) data through the radiative transfer simulations under various atmospheric profiles (TIGR data), satellite zenith angle (SZA), spectral emissivity, and surface lapse rate conditions using MODTRAN 4. However, the LST retrieval algorithm has a tendency to overestimate and underestimate the LST for surface inversion and superadiabatic conditions, respectively. To minimize the overestimation and underestimation of LST, we also developed day/night LST algorithms separately based on the surface lapse rate (local time) and recalculated the final LST by using the weighted sum of day/night LST. The analysis results showed that the quality of weighted LST of day/night algorithms is greatly improved compared to that of LST estimated by original algorithm regardless of the surface lapse rate, spectral emissivity difference (${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$) SZA, and atmospheric conditions. In general, the improvements are greatest when the surface lapse rate and ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ are negatively large (strong inversion conditions and less vegetated surface).
Among finite field arithmetic operations, the $AB^2$ operation is known as an efficient basic operation for public key cryptosystems over $GF(2^m)$,Division/Inversion is computed by performing the repetitive AB$^2$ multiplication. This paper presents two new $AB^2$algorithms and their systolic realizations in finite fields $GF(2^m)$.The proposed algorithms are based on the MSB-first scheme using standard basis representation and the proposed systolic architectures for $AB^2$ multiplication have a low hardware complexity and small latency compared to the conventional approaches. Additionally, since the proposed architectures incorporate simplicity, regularity, modularity, and pipelinability, they are well suited to VLSI implementation and can be easily applied to inversion architecture. Furthermore, these architectures will be utilized for the basic architecture of crypto-processor.
In this study, we propose a joint inversion method, using genetic algorithms, to determine the shear-wave velocity structure of deep sedimentary layers from receiver functions and surface-wave phase velocity. Numerical experiments with synthetic data indicate that the proposed method can avoid the trade-off between shear-wave velocity and thickness that arises when inverting the receiver function only, and the uncertainty in deep structure from surface-wave phase velocity inversion alone. We apply the method to receiver functions obtained from earthquake records with epicentral distances of about 100 km, and Rayleigh-wave phase velocities obtained from a microtremor array survey in the Kanto Plain, Japan. The estimated subsurface structure is in good agreement with the previous results of seismic refraction surveys and deep borehole data.
This article reviews recent developments in three-dimensional (3-D) magntotelluric (MT) imaging. The inversion of MT data is fundamentally ill-posed, and therefore the resultant solution is non-unique. A regularizing scheme must be involved to reduce the non-uniqueness while retaining certain a priori information in the solution. The standard approach to nonlinear inversion in geophysis has been the Gauss-Newton method, which solves a sequence of linearized inverse problems. When running to convergence, the algorithm minimizes an objective function over the space of models and in the sense produces an optimal solution of the inverse problem. The general usefulness of iterative, linearized inversion algorithms, however is greatly limited in 3-D MT applications by the requirement of computing the Jacobian(partial derivative, sensitivity) matrix of the forward problem. The difficulty may be relaxed using conjugate gradients(CG) methods. A linear CG technique is used to solve each step of Gauss-Newton iterations incompletely, while the method of nonlinear CG is applied directly to the minimization of the objective function. These CG techniques replace computation of jacobian matrix and solution of a large linear system with computations equivalent to only three forward problems per inversion iteration. Consequently, the algorithms are efficient in computational speed and memory requirement, making 3-D inversion feasible.

During the past three decades, several techniques have been suggested for robust performance design of multivariable systems within the framework of Quantitative Feedback Theory. They are all characterized and limited by the use of loop transmission inversion. A new approach within framework is described which leads to a design tehnique without loop transmission inversion. Complete sequential design algorithms are derived for performance specifications in terms of plant input disturbance, sensitivity, complimentary sensitivity and control effort.
This paper proposes an efficient inversion algorithm for Galois field GF(2n) by using a modified multi-bit shifting method based on the Montgomery algorithm. It is well known that the efficiency of arithmetic algorithms depends on the basis and many foregoing papers use either polynomial or optimal normal basis. An inversion algorithm, which modifies a multi-bit shifting based on the Montgomery algorithm, is studied. Trinomials and AOPs (all-one polynomials) are tested to calculate the inverse. It is shown that the suggested inversion algorithm reduces the computation time up to 26 % of the forgoing multi-bit shifting algorithm. The modified algorithm can be applied in various applications and is easy to implement.
Bayesian inversion for gravity and resistivity data was performed to investigate the cavity structure appearing as a lava tunnel in Cheju Island, Korea. Dipole-dipole DC resistivity data were proposed for a prior information of gravity data and we applied the geostatistical techniques such as kriging and simulation algorithms to provide a prior model information and covariance matrix in data domain. The inverted resistivity section gave the indicator variogram modeling for each threshold and it provided spatial uncertainty to give a prior PDF by sequential indicator simulations. We also presented a more objective way to make data covariance matrix that reflects the state of the achieved field data by geostatistical technique, cross-validation. Then Gaussian approximation was adopted for the inference of characteristics of the marginal distributions of model parameters and Broyden update for simple calculation of sensitivity matrix and SVD was applied. Generally cavity investigation by geophysical exploration is difficult and success is hard to be achieved. However, this exotic multiple interpretations showed remarkable improvement and stability for interpretation when compared to data-fit alone results, and suggested the possibility of diverse application for Bayesian inversion in geophysical inverse problem.
After Kyoto protocol took effect, many countries are making efforts to reduce $CO_2$ one of effective which is geosequestration. But a percentage of geosequestration in total research budget is very small and the priority order of research also is receded in Korea. As one of efforts to activate the research on geosequestration in field of geophysics, we proposed the plan to build up a measurement system for rock physical properties monitoring during $CO_2$ injection which will function as original technology. The system consists of two part, one of which is a data acquisition system based on seismic and complex resistivity tomographic measurement and the other of which is a tri-axial compressive system to realize the in-situ condition. And also developments of various inversion algorithms are proposed to interpret data qualitatively such as a inversion algorithm for confined cylindrical boundary, a joint inversion algorithm and a 4-D inversion algorithm.

The conjugate gradient (CG) method is one of the most efficient algorithms for solving a linear system of equations. In addition to being used as a linear equation solver, it can be applied to a least-squares problem. When the CG method is applied to large-scale three-dimensional inversion of magnetotelluric data, two approaches have been pursued; one is the linear CG inversion in which each step of the Gauss-Newton iteration is incompletely solved using a truncated CG technique, and the other is referred to as the nonlinear CG inversion in which CG is directly applied to the minimization of objective functional for a nonlinear inverse problem. In each procedure we only need to compute the effect of the sensitivity matrix or its transpose multiplying an arbitrary vector, significantly reducing the computational requirements needed to do large-scale inversion.
