  • An intrusion detection system writes a lot of alarms against attack behaviors in real time. These alarms contain not only actual attack alarms, but also false alarms that are mistakes made by the intrusion detection system. False alarms are the main reason that reduces the efficiency of the intrusion detection system, and we propose framework for false alarms analysis in the paper. Also, we apply an incremental data mining method for pattern analysis of false alarms increasing continuously. The framework consists of GUI, DB Manager, Alert Preprocessor, and False Alarm Analyzer. We analyze the false alarms increasingly through the experiment of the proposed framework and show that false alarms are reduced by applying the analyzed false alarm rules in the intrusion detection system.

  • In network intrusion detection research, two characteristics are generally considered vital to building efficient intrusion detection systems (IDSs): an optimal feature selection technique and robust classification schemes. However, the emergence of sophisticated network attacks and the advent of big data concepts in intrusion detection domains require two more significant aspects to be addressed: employing an appropriate big data computing framework and utilizing a contemporary dataset to deal with ongoing advancements. As such, we present a comprehensive approach to building an efficient IDS with the aim of strengthening academic anomaly detection research in real-world operational environments. The proposed system has the following four characteristics: (i) it performs optimal feature selection using information gain and branch-and-bound algorithms; (ii) it employs machine learning techniques for classification, namely, Logistic Regression, Naïve Bayes, and Random Forest; (iii) it introduces bulk synchronous parallel processing to handle the computational requirements of large-scale networks; and (iv) it utilizes a real-time contemporary dataset generated by the Information Security Centre of Excellence at the University of Brunswick (ISCX-UNB) to validate its efficacy. Experimental analysis shows the effectiveness of the proposed framework, which is able to achieve high accuracy, low computational cost, and reduced false alarms.

  • Information can be leaked, changed, damaged and illegally used regardless of the intension of the information owner. Intrusion Detection Systems and Firewalls are used to protect the illegal accesses in the network. But these are the passive protection method, not the active protection method. They only react based on the predefined protection rules or only report to the administrator. In this paper, we develop the intrusion detection and protection system using Netfilter framework. The system makes the administrator's management easy and simple. Furthermore, it offers active protection mechanism against the intrusions.

  • In this paper, we proposed a data mining framework for the management of alerts in order to improve the performance of the intrusion detection systems. The proposed alert data mining framework performs alert correlation analysis by using mining tasks such as axis-based association rule, axis-based frequent episodes and order-based clustering. It also provides the capability of classify false alarms in order to reduce false alarms. We also analyzed the characteristics of the proposed system through the implementation and evaluation of the proposed system. The proposed alert data mining framework performs not only the alert correlation analysis but also the false alarm classification. The alert data mining framework can find out the unknown patterns of the alerts. It also can be applied to predict attacks in progress and to understand logical steps and strategies behind series of attacks using sequences of clusters and to classify false alerts from intrusion detection system. The final rules that were generated by alert data mining framework can be used to the real time response of the intrusion detection system.

  • In this paper, we propose a secure communication framework for interaction and information sharing between a server and agents in DS-NVSA(Detection System of Network Vulnerability Scan Attacks) proposed in〔1〕. For the scalability and interoperability with other detection systems, we design the proposed IDMEF and IAP that have been drafted by IDWG. We adapt IDMEF and IAP to the proposed framework and provide SKTLS(Symmetric Key based Transport Layer Security Protocol) for the network environment that cannot afford to support public-key infrastructure. Our framework provides the reusability of heterogeneous intrusion detection systems and enables the scope of intrusion detection to be extended. Also it can be used as a framework for ESM(Enterprise Security Management) system.

  • Much research efforts are being exerted for the study of intrusion detection system(IDS). However little work has been for the communication medels and performance eveluation of the IDS. Here we present a communication framework for doing hybrid intrusion detection in which agents are used for local intrusion detections with a centralized data anaysis componenta for a global intrusion detection at multiple domains environment. We also assume the combination of host-based and network-based intrusion detection systems in the oberall framework. From the local domain, a set of information such as alert, and / or log data are reported to the upper level. At the root of the hierarchy, there is a global manager where data coalescing is performed. The global manager delivers a security policy to its lower levels as the result of aggregation and correlation of intrusion detection alerts. In this paper, we model the communication mechanisms for the hybrid IDS and develop a simular using OPNET modeller for the performance evaluation of transmission capabillities for the delivery of data and policy. We present and compare simulation results based on several scenarios focuding on communication delay.

  • The false alarm data in intrusion detection systems are divided into false positive and false negative. The false positive makes bad effects on the performance of intrusion detection system. And the false negative makes bad effects on the efficiency of intrusion detection system. Recently, the most of works have been studied the data mining technique for analysis of alert data. However, the false alarm data not only increase data volume but also change patterns of alert data along the time line. Therefore, we need a tool that can analyze patterns that change characteristics when we look for new patterns. In this paper, we focus on the false positives and present a framework for analysis of false alarm pattern from the alert data. In this work, we also apply incremental data mining techniques to analyze patterns of false alarms among alert data that are incremental over the time. Finally, we achieved flexibility by using dynamic support threshold, because the volume of alert data as well as included false alarms increases irregular.

  • Policies are collections of general principles specifying the desired behavior and state of a system. Network management is mainly carried out by following policies about the behavior of the resources in the network. Policy-based (PB) network management supports to manage distributed system in a flexible and dynamic way. This paper focuses on configuration management based on Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards. Network security approaches include the usage of intrusion detection system to detect the intrusion, building firewall to protect the internal systems and network. This paper presents how the policy-based framework is collaborated among the network security systems (intrusion detection system, firewall) and intrusion detection systems are cooperated to detect the intrusions.

  • The pattern matching part of Intrusion Detection System based on misuse-detection mechanism needs much processing time and resources, and it has become a bottleneck in system performance. Moreover, it derives denial-of-service attack. In this paper, we propose (1) framework architecture that is strong against denial-of-service attack and (2) efficient pattern matching method especially for web server system. By using both of these 2 methods, we can maintain web server system efficiently secure against attacks including denial-of-service.

  • Immune-inspired intrusion detection is a promising technology for network security, and well known for its diversity, adaptation, self-tolerance, etc. However, scalability and coverage are two major drawbacks of the immune-inspired intrusion detection systems (IIDSes). In this paper, we propose an IIDS framework, named GEP-IIDS, with improved basic system elements to address these two problems. First, an additional bio-inspired technique, gene expression programming (GEP), is introduced in detector (corresponding to detection rules) representation. In addition, inspired by the avidity model of immunology, new avidity/affinity functions taking the priority of attributes into account are given. Based on the above two improved elements, we also propose a novel immune algorithm that is capable of integrating two bio-inspired mechanisms (i.e., negative selection and positive selection) by using a balance factor. Finally, a pruning algorithm is given to reduce redundant detectors that consume footprint and detection time but do not contribute to improving performance. Our experimental results show the feasibility and effectiveness of our solution to handle the scalability and coverage problems of IIDS.
