To reflect the size effect of material $(1\sim15{\mu}m)$ during plastic deformation of polycrystalline copper, a constitutive equation which includes the strain gradient plasticity theory and intrinsic material length model is coupled with the finite element analysis and applied to plane strain deformation problem. The method of least square has been used to calculate the strain gradient at each element during deformation and the effect of distributed force on the strain gradient is investigated as well. It shows when material size is less than the intrinsic material length $(1.54{\mu}m)$, its deformation behavior is quite different compared with that computed from the conventional plasticity. The generation of strain gradient is greatly suppressed, but it appears again as the material size increases. Results also reveal that the strain gradient leads to deformation hardening. The distributed force plays a role to amplify the strain gradient distribution.

A model of mechanical behavior of microcantilever due to intrinsic strain during deposition of MEMS structures is derived. A linear ordinary differential equation is derived for the beam deflection as a function of the thickness of the deposited layer. Closed-form solutions are not possible, but numerical solutions are plotted for various dimensionless ratios of the beam stiffness, the intrinsic strain, and the elastic moduli of the substrate and deposited layer. This model predicts the deflection of the cantilever as a function of the deposited layer thickness and the residual stress distribution during deposition. The usefulness of these equations is that they are indicative of the real time behavior of the structures, i.e. it predicts the deflection of the beam continuously during deposition process.
In this work, we have employed the strain gradient plasticity theory to investigate the effect of material size on the deformation behavior in metal forming process. Flow stress is expressed in terms of strain, strain gradient (spatial derivative of strain) and intrinsic material length. The least square method coupled with strain gradient plasticity was used to calculate the components of strain gradient at each element of material. For demonstrating the size effect, the proposed approach has been applied to plane compression process and micro rolling process. Results show when the characteristic length of the material comes to the intrinsic material length, the effect of strain gradient is noteworthy. For the microcompression, the additional work hardening at higher strain gradient regions results in uniform distribution of strain. In the case of micro-rolling, the strain gradient is remarkable at the exit section where the actual reduction of the rolling finishes and subsequently strong work hardening take places at the section. This results in a considerable increase in rolling force. Rolling force with the strain gradient plasticity considered in analysis increases by 20% compared to that with conventional plasticity theory.
The oxidation of silicon wafers is an essential step in the fabrication of semiconductor devices. It is known to induce degradation of electrical properties and lattice strain of Si substrate from thermal oxidation process due to charged interface and thermal expansion mismatch from thermally grown SiO, film. In this study, convergent beam electron diffraction technique is employed to directly measure the lattice strains in Si(100) and $4^{\circ}$ - off Si(100) substrates with thermally grown oxide layer at $1200^{\circ}C$ for three hours. The ratios of {773}-{973}/{773}-{953} Higher Order Laue Zone lines were used at [012] zone axis orientation. Lattice parameters of the Si substrate as a function of distance from the interface were determined from the computer simulation of diffraction patterns. Correction value for the accelerating voltage was 0.2kV for the kinematic simulation of the [012]. HOLZ patterns. The change in the lattice strain profile before and after removal of oxide films revealed the magnitudes of intrinsic strain and thermal strain components. It was shown that $4^{\circ}$ -off Si(100) had much lower intrinsic strain as surface steps provide effective sinks for the free Si atoms produced during thermal oxidation. Thermal strain in the Si substrate was in compression very close to the interface and high concentration of Si interstitials appeared to modify the thermal expansion coefficient of Si.

The difference in the thermotolerance between Saccharomyces cerevisiae KNU5377 and ATCC24858 was compared by assaying the amounts of trehalose accumulated under growth and heat shock conditions. Both strains exhibited similar trehalose accumulation during the growth period, but an intrinsic thermotolerance was much higher in KNU5377 than in the control strain. This result implied that some strain-specific characteristics of KNU5377, other than trehalose accumulation, primarily were responsible fur its higher intrinsic thermotolerance. Heat shock at $43^{\circ}C$ for 90 min to the exponentially growing cells resulted in the maximum level of trehalose In both strains. Trehalose accumulated at least twice more in KNU5377 by the heat shock than in the control, due to the maintenance of its neutral trehalase activity even after the heat shock. Consequently, the Increase of acquired thermotolerance in both strains correlated with an increase in the trehalose content in each strain. In conclusion, KNU5377 exhibited a well-modulated trehalose-related mechanism to accumulate more trehalose by means of maintaining neutral trehalase activity after heat shock than the control strain, thereby contributing to its acquired thermotolerance.

Intrinsic Fabry-Perot Optical fiber sensors were embedded to tensile side of the 20cm$\times$20cm$\times$150cm cement concrete structures. The sensors were attached to the reinforcing steels and then, the cement concretes were applied. It took 30 days for curing the specimens. After that, the specimens were tested with 4-point bending method by universal testing machine. Strains were measured and recorded by the strain gauges embedded near optical fiber sensors. Output data of fiber sensor showed good linearity to the strain data from the strain gauges up 2000microstrain. The optical fiber sensors showed good response after yielding of structure while embedded metal film strain gauges did not show any response. We also specimens were broken down. In conclusion, the optical fiber sensors can be used as elements of health monitoring systems for cement concrete infra-structures.

The genes encoding the DNA gyrase A (GyrA) and B subunits (GyrB) of Methylovorus sp. strain SS1 were cloned and sequenced. gyrA and gyrB coded for proteins of 846 and 799 amino acids with calculated molecular weights of 94,328 and 88,714, respectively, and complemented Escherichia coli gyrA and gyrB temperature sensitive (ts) mutants. To analyze the role of type II topoisomerases in the intrinsic quinolone resistance of methylotrophic bacteria, the sequences of the quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDRs) in the A subunit of DNA gyrase and the C subunit (ParC) of topoisomerase IV (Topo IV) of Methylovorus sp. strain SS1, Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 NCIB 9133, Methylobacillus sp, strain SK1 DSM 8269, and Methylophilus methylotrophus NCIB 10515 were determined. The deduced amino acid sequences of the QRDRs of the ParCs in the four methylotrophic bacteria were identical to that of E. coli ParC. The sequences of the QRDR in GyrA were also identical to those in E. coli GyrA except for the amino acids at positions 83, 87, or 95. The $Ser^{83}$ to Thr substitution in Methylovorus sp. strain SS1, and the $Ser^{83}$ to Leu and $Asp^{87}$ to Asn substitutions in the three other methylotrophs, agreed well with the minimal inhibitory concentrations of quinolones in the four bacteria, suggesting that these residues play a role in the intrinsic susceptibility of methylotrophic bacteria to quinolones.

PMFBG sensor was fabricated using phase mask and Excimer laser. The reflected wavelength of PMFBG sensor had dual peaks due to intrinsic birefringence. To discover the polarization axes, peak sensitivity was measured under compression test. The signal characteristics of PMFBG sensor were also examined in embedding condition. The embedded PMFBG sensor in epoxy block was loaded for the transverse strain measurements. Experiments showed that the PMFBG sensor could successfully measure the transverse strain. This PMFBG sensor is useful for the structures that require measuring transverse stram.
To investigate the effect of strains heat effect and thermal energy on the intrinsic degradation of $LaNi_5$, the changes of P-C-Isotherm curves under the condition of mainly applied one of the above factors were investigated. The revesible hydrogen storage capacity decreased by means of the hydrogenation at high temperature without cyclings or pressure induced cyclings with low thermal energy. The degree of degradation was more severe as the heat of hydrogenation reaction increased. Thus the intrinsic degradation of $LaNi_5$ depended upon lattice strain as well as thermal energy.
