An inverse method is introduced to construct benchmark problems for the numerical solution of initial value problems. Benchmark problems constructed through this method have a known exact solution, even though analytical solutions are generally not obtainable. The solution is constructed such that it lies near a given approximate numerical solution, and therefore the special case solution can be generated in a versatile and physically meaningful fashion and can serve as a benchmark problem to validate approximate solution methods. A smooth interpolation of the approximate solution is forced to exactly satisfy the differential equation by analytically deriving a small forcing function to absorb all of the errors in the interpolated approximate solution. A multi-variable orthogonal function expansion method and computer symbol manipulation are successfully used for this process. Using this special case exact solution, it is possible to directly investigate the relationship between global errors of a candidate numerical solution process and the associated tuning parameters for a given code and a given problem. Under the assumption that the original differential equation is well-posed with respect to the small perturbations, we thereby obtain valuable information about the optimal choice of the tuning parameters and the achievable accuracy of the numerical solution. Illustrative examples show the utility of this method not only for the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) but for the partial differential equations (PDEs).

In this paper, identification of isotropic and orthotropic linear elastic material constitutive parameters has been demonstrated by a FEA-free energy-based inverse analysis method. An important feature of the proposed method is that it requires no finite element (FE) simulation of the tested material. Full-field displacements calculated using digital image correlation (DIC) are used to compute DIC stress fields enforcing the equilibrium condition and DIC strain fields using interpolation functions. Boundary tractions and displacements are implicitly recast into an objective function that measures the energy residual of external work and internal elastic strain energy. The energy conservation principle states that the residual should be zero, and so minimizing this objective function inversely identifies the constitutive parameters. Synthetic data from simulated testing of isotropic materials and orthotropic composite materials under 2D plane stress conditions are used for verification of the proposed method. When identifying the constitutive parameters, it is beneficial to apply loadings in multiple directions, and in ways that create non-uniform stress distributions. The sensitivity of the parameter identification method to noise in both the measured full-field DIC displacements and loadings has been investigated.

This paper presents a method for propagating fuzzy concepts through fuzzy IF-THEN-ELSE rules. A fuzzy IF-THEN-ELSE rule consists of a set of fuzzy condition and conclusion pairs. These pairs assumed to contain informations about a fuzzy mapping from fuzzy concepts of condition parts to the fuzzy concepts of conclusion parts. Conventionally, vectors are used to define fuzzy concepts and matrices are used to define a fuzzy mapping between fuzzy conditions and conclusions. This approach, however, does not satisfy the existing condition property, i.e., when a fuzzy input data exactly matches to a fuzzy condition, fuzzy output data should be mapped to a corresponding fuzzy conclusion. Alternatively, we propose a parameterized approach in which every fuzzy concept is described by a parameterized standard function, including fuzzy conditions and fuzzy conclusions. A fuzzy IF-THEN-ELSE rule takes the parameterized fuzzy concept as an input, and produces a standard function with new parameters as an output. New parameters are determined by a parameterwise interpolation. That is, each output parameters are determined by interpolating parameters of the same class contained in fuzzy conclusions. Obviously, the proposed scheme always satisfies the existing condition property.
In the particular situations where the crack is terminated at an interface of two materials, the order of stress singularity depends on the elastic constants which specify the properties of two materials. A multidomain boundary element technique is used to solve a crack normal to bimaterial interface. A correct order of shape function is used for displacement by using the isoparametric elements by shifting adequately the side nodes adjacent to this crack tip. A shape function containing the same order of singularity as that in the interface crack is also used for the interpolation of traction. Numerical testing of a binaterial with a crack normal to the interface is carried out with three-node elements. The results obtained are compared with the previous solutions.

In this paper a new approach which combines implicit surface scheme and NURBS surface interpolation method is proposed in order to generate a complete surface model from unorganized point cloud data. In the method a base surface was generated by creating smooth implicit surface from the input point cloud data through which the actual surface would pass. The implicit surface was defined by a combination of shape functions including quadratic polynomial function, cubic polynomial functions and radial basis function using adaptive domain decomposition method. In this paper voxel data which can be extracted easily from the base implicit surface were used in order to generate rectangular net with good quality using the normal projection and smoothing scheme. After generating the interior points and tangential vectors in each rectangular region considering the required accuracy, the NURBS surface were constructed by interpolating the rectangular array of points using boundary tangential vectors which assure C$^1$ continuity between rectangular patches. The validity and effectiveness of this new approach was demonstrated by performing numerical experiments for the various types of point cloud data.
This study presents an improved method that uses the elastic and inelastic system buckling analyses for determining the K-factors of steel column members. The inelastic system buckling analysis is based on the tangent modulus theory for a single column and the application is extended to the frame structural system. The tangent modulus of an inelastic column is first derived as a function of nominal compressive stress from the column strength curve given in the design codes. The tangential stiffness matrix of a beam-column element is then formulated by using the so-called stability function or Hermitian interpolation functions. Two inelastic system buckling analysis procedures are newly proposed by utilizing nonlinear eigenvalue analysis algorithms. Finally, a practical method for determining the K-factors of individual members in a steel frame structure is proposed based on the inelastic and/or elastic system buckling analyses. The K-factors according to the proposed procedure are calculated for numerical examples and compared with other results in available references.

A current trend of design methodologies is to make engineers objectify or automate the decision-making process. Numerical optimization is an example of such technologies. However, in numerical optimization, the uncertainties are uncontrollable to efficiently objectify or automate the process. To better manage these uncertainties, the Taguchi method, reliability-based optimization and robust optimization are being used. To obtain the target performance with the maximum robustness is the main functional requirement of a mechanical system. In this research, a design procedure for global robust optimization is developed based on the kriging and global optimization approaches. The DACE modeling, known as the one of Kriging interpolation, is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of the function. Robustness is determined by the DACE model to reduce real function calculations. The simulated annealing algorithm of global optimization methods is adopted to determine the global robust design of a surrogated model. As the postprocess, the first order second-moment approximation method is applied to refine the robust optimum. The mathematical problems and the MEMS design problem are investigated to show the validity of the proposed method.
We demonstrate a k-domain linearization using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array for Fourier domain optical coherence tomography based on a wavelength swept laser. The k-domain linearization is carried out with an interpolation method using a FBG array with five FBGs. The measured signal-to-noise ratio from the point spread function after k-domain linearization is 12 dB improved over that of without k-domain linearization at the 1 mm depth of the sample. Clear OCT imaging of the slide glass with k-domain linearization could be obtained.
A new method of formulation of a class of elements that are immune to mesh distortion effects is proposed here. The simple three-noded bar element with an offset of the internal node from the element center is employed here to demonstrate the method and the principles on which it is founded upon. Using the function space approach, the modified formulation is shown here to be superior to the conventional isoparametric version of the element since it satisfies the completeness requirement as the metric formulation, and yet it is in agreement with the best-fit paradigm in both the metric and the parametric domains. Furthermore, the element error is limited to only those that are permissible by the classical projection theorem of strains and stresses. Unlike its conventional counterpart, the modified element is thus not prone to any errors from mesh distortion. The element formulation is symmetric and thus satisfies the requirement of the conservative nature of problems associated with all self-adjoint differential operators. The present paper indicates that a proper mapping set for distortion immune elements constitutes geometric and displacement interpolations through parametric and metric shape functions respectively, with the metric components in the displacement/strain replaced by the equivalent geometric interpolation in parametric co-ordinates.
Global state space's optimal policy is used for offline controller in the form of table by using Dynamic Programming. If an optimal policy table has a large amount of control data, it is difficult to use the system in a low capacity system. To resolve these problem, controller using the compressed optimal policy table is proposed in this paper. A DCT is used for compression method and the cosine function is used as a basis. The size of cosine function decreased as the frequency increased. In other words, an essential information which is used for restoration is concentrated in the low frequency band and a value of small size that belong to a high frequency band could be discarded by quantization because high frequency's information doesn't have a big effect on restoration. Therefore, memory could be largely reduced by removing the information. The compressed output is stored in memory of embedded system in offline and optimal control input which correspond to state of plant is computed by interpolation with Inverse DCT in online. To verify the performance of the proposed controller, computer simulation was accomplished with a one link inverted pendulum.
