Though services requiring Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) have been widely deployed on the internet, most of internet backbone networks, unfortunately, do not distinguish them from the best-effort services. Thus estimating the effective capacity meaning the traffic volume that the backbone networks maximally accommodate with keeping QoS guarantees for the services is very important for Internet Service Providers. This paper proposes a test-bed based on ns-2 to evaluate the effective capacity of backbone networks and then estimates the effective capacity of an experimental backbone network using the test-bed in terms of the service standard of the VoIP service. The result showed that the effective capacity of the network is estimated as between 12% and 55% of its physical capacity, which is depending on the maximum delay guarantee probability, and strongly affected by not only the type of offered workload but also the quality standard. Especially, it demonstrated that in order to improve the effective capacity the maximum end-to-end delay requirement of the VoIP service needs to be loosened in terms of the probability to guarantee.

Due to rapid developments of IT technologies, convergence services like IPTV (Internet protocol television) are shown up. Even though expert and customer had great expectations for this innovative service, commercialization was delayed for years by the legal dispute between industry players. One of the biggest problems was that whether internet backbone providers have to share their internet network backbone with IPTV service providers (which don't have network backbone) or not. As other countries, Korean government set the rules that ISP have to offer indiscriminate access to other IPTV service provider. At the same time, internet backbone providers can charge access charge based on cost by way of compensation. Thus access charge is very critical to the IPTV industry players. The objective of this paper is to provide model that can calculate the reasonable access charge by system dynamics, based upon real data in Korean telecommunication industry.
This paper is related to the optimal pricing of Internet Backbone Services that are differentiated according to the size of the bandwidth required for applications with different quality sensitivities, Itdiscusses IBP (Internet Backbone Provider) optimal nonlinear pricing process in the presence of a congestion externality in addition to strategic behavior by users. In this scenario, the quality of service provided may reach its socially optimal level irrespective of strategic behavior by users and may be independent of the characteristics of the applications delivered over the Internet.

Over for the past 10 years, the increase in geometric progression for the internet traffic, has allowed the IP protocol framework to be the most important network technology. In addition, the internet service is being developed as a service mode differentiated, aiming to support the new-mode real-time multimedia services such as internet phone, video conference, cyber reality, and internet game, focusing on offering a latest service. These days, aiming to solve the need for broad bandwidth along with guaranteeing QoS, the WDM technology of offering multiple gigabit wavelengths is emerging as the core technology of next-generation optical internet backbone network. In the next-generation optical internet backbone network based on WDM, the QoS framework is one of fore subjects aiming to offer a service of guaranteeing QoS This study analyzes the requirements of performance related to QoS framework in IP Subnet and in WDM optical backbone network, and suggests optical QoS service framework differentiated. in order to guarantee end-to-end QoS through the next-generation optical internet backbone network, using GMPLS control protocol.

We build and analyze some types of queueing model to discuss capacity dimensioning of access links of a LAN interworking unit connected to the Internet backbone network. We assume that the IWU has a FIFO buffer to transmit IP packets to the Internet through the backbone. In order to analyze the system, we use a Poisson process and an MMPP process as input traffic models of IP packets and we use a general service time distribution as a service time model. But we use both an exponential service time and a deterministic service time in numerical examples for simple and efficient performance comparisons. As performance measures, we obtain the packet loss probability and the mean packet delay. We present some numerical results to show the effect of arrival rate, buffer size and link capacity on packet loss and mean delay.
It is absolutely essential to implement advanced IP network technologies such as QoS, Multicast, High Availability, and Security in order to provide real-time services like IPTV via IP backbone network. In reality, the existing commercial networks of internet service providers are subject to certain technical difficulties and limitations in embodying those technologies. On-going research efforts involve the experimental engineering works and implementation experience to trigger IPTV service on the premium-level IP backbone which has recently been developed. This paper introduces the core network technologies that will enable the deployment of a high-quality IPTV service, and then proposes a suitable methodology for application and deployment policies on each technology to lead the establishment and globalization of the IPTV service.
As optical network technology advances, the Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing(DWDM) networks have been widely accepted as a promising approach to the Next Generation Optical Internet (NGOI) backbone networks. Especially. a fault/attack management scheme in NGOI backbone networks is one of the most important issues because a short service disruption in DWDM networks carrying extremely high data rates causes loss of vast traffic volumes. In this paper, we suggest a fault/attack management model for NGOI backbone networks and propose a fault/attack recovery procedure in IP/GMPLS over DWDM.
Traditional service-level agreements (SLAs), defined by average delay or packet loss, often camouflage the instantaneous performance perceived by end-users. We define a set of metrics for service availability to quantify the performance of Internet protocol (IP) backbone networks and capture the impact of routing dynamics on packet forwarding. Given a network topology and its link weights, we propose a novel technique to compute the associated service availability by taking into account transient routing dynamics and operational conditions, such as border gateway protocol (BGP) table size and traffic distributions. Even though there are numerous models for characterizing topologies, none of them provide insights on the expected performance perceived by end customers. Our simulations show that the amount of service disruption experienced by similar networks (i.e., with similar intrinsic properties such as average out-degree or network diameter) could be significantly different, making it imperative to use new metrics for characterizing networks. In the second part of the paper, we derive goodness factors based on service availability viewed from three perspectives: Ingress node (from one node to many destinations), link (traffic traversing a link), and network-wide (across all source-destination pairs). We show how goodness factors can be used in various applications and describe our numerical results.

As optical network technology advances and high bandwidth Internet is demanded for the exponential growth of internet traffic volumes, the Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) networks have been widely accepted as a promising approach to the Next Generation Optical Internet (NGOI) backbone networks for nation wide or global coverage. Important issues in the NGOI based on DWDM networks are the Routing and Wavelength Assignment(RWA) problem and survivability. Especially, fault/attack detection, localization and recovery schemes in All Optical Transport Network(AOTN) is one of the most important issues because a short service disruption in DWDM networks carrying extremely high data rates causes loss of vast traffic volumes. In this paper, we suggest a fault/attack management model for NGOI through analyzing fault/attack vulnerability of various optical backbone network devices and propose fault/attack recovery procedure considering Extended-LMP(Link Management Protocol) and RSVP-TE+(Resource Reservation Protocol-Traffic Engineering) as control protocols in IP/GMPLS over DWDM.

The Internet is evolving from best-effort service toward an integrated or differentiated service framework with quality-of-service (QoS) assurances that are required for new multimedia service applications. Given this increasing demand for high bandwidth Internet with QoS assurances in the coming years, an IP/MPLS-based control plane combined. with a wavelength-routed dense-wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical network is seen as a very promising approach for the realization of future re-configurable transport networks. This paper proposes a differentiated lambda establishment process for QoS guarantees based on the differentiated MPLS service (DMS) model. According to the QoS characteristics of wavelength in optical links and the type of used Optical Cross-Connect (OXC) nodes in DWDM next generation optical Internet backbone network, a differentiated wavelength assignment strategy that considers QoS recovery capability is also suggested.
