  • In this paper, we present a review of research perspectives and investigations in collegiate mathematics education from the four decades of development in the journal published by Korea Society of Mathematical Education. Research of mathematics education at the tertiary level, which had been a minor area in mathematics education, has made a significant development in the last decade in Europe md U.S.A. In this context, international journals for research in mathematics education were selected to comparatively examine and identify research trends and tasks in collegiate mathematics education. Based on the analysis of domestic at international journals, we present recommendations for further the development of Korean collegiate mathematics education research. First it is necessary to diversify the topics of educational research. Korean research of mathematics education at the tertiary level has been limited to the issues of curriculum developments, teacher education and computer technology. It is necessary to pursue more various topics such as conceptual development mathematical attitude and belief gender, socio-cultural aspect of teaching and teaming mathematics. Second, it is necessary to apply research methods for systematic investigations. It is important to note that international research of mathematics education introduces variety of research methods such as observation, interview, and survey in order to develop grounded theory of mathematics education. We end with pedagogical implications of the analyses presented and general conclusions concerning the perspectives for the future in collegiate mathematics education.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey the learning strategies and learning styles of the undergraduates in international e-trade simulation education. The set of learning strategies are investigated and the analysis is made how learning styles could affect the learning strategies. The subjects of this study were 112 undergraduates majored in international trade and their classes were using e-trade simulation. It is found that the undergraduates' learning strategy level is not high because the simulation education is not common yet in e-trade classes. The levels of self-efficacy and positive attitudes have high level whereas the expression strategy has the lowest. Strong results were not found among undergraduates' learning styles by each of the 11 strategies except two cases. One is that the undergraduates who had experiences of e-learning have higher level of social strategy than those of non e-learning experience group. The other is that the more the students spend the time in the simulation class, the more they have positive attitudes. This study supports that the simulation can increase the effectiveness of e-trade learning.

The result of this research will serve as a basis for suggesting methods of developing a curriculum in Korean writing as a liberal arts education designed for international students. To analyze problems presented in academic writing by international students, the standard of assessment was divided into interaction, knowledge construction, and material quotation. Then, knowledge construction was divided into contents, structure, and expression, and the items were subdivided in each category. These categories of assessment correspond to the genre of academic writing and are different from the existing standard of assessment for academic writing. Applying these standards, this research analyzed 43 texts of academic writing in process for a final paper by international students in an class and presented problems in them. Furthermore, this paper aims to give detailed feedback that can help solve those problems.

  • The aim of this case research is to describe the convergence education of Akita International University. Today, competition among universities in Korea are becoming more and more intensified, its strength is expected to continue to rise. In this situation, the Akita International University provides meaningful implications for universities in Korea. Universities in Japan are at similar situation in Korea. The unique values of Akita that we identified are twofold: The first is internationalization in education. The purpose of the internationalization is for Japanese students. For exchange students, AIU provides japan studies program and japan language program. To do this, AIU forms an international community to mingle Japanese students with foreign exchange students by living and learning together. Second thing is about international liberal arts education. The focus of international liberal arts education is that students acquire comprehensive range of skills and knowledge to build the intellectual foundation for specialist study by providing a broad range of academic disciplines. In doing so, students promotes learner autonomy. Unlike specialized education, in which students acquire an in-depth knowledge of a particular field, providing international liberal arts education is to find a field in which students want to study further. The implications and conclusions are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to review health and adjustment issues of Korean students in the context of international students' health in the United States. The number of international students studying in the United States has increased. In addition, more and more Koreans come to the United States for education. Korean students formed the fifth largest international group found on American campuses. As more and more international students study on American campuses, their health needs and problems became a concern to health professionals. Most health problems international students experience are stress related and psychosomatic. These students also have difficulties in using health care services. International students face barriers to obtaining health care because of differences in language and differences in cultural beliefs toward health. Korea manifests an eastern culture which is quite different from the western culture, so many Korean students studying in the United States experience difficulties in adjustment and using health care services. The study on the needs of Korean students in the U.S. reviewed in this research was a survey of 105 Korean students at the Pennsylvania State University, 1990. Korean students' health problems included stress, colds, fatigue, and headaches. Homesickness, financial problems, and academic problems were also important problems the Korean students faced. Korean students usually did not participate in any activities with Americans as much as with Koreans. Most Korean students did not participated in any health education workshops held on campus. This may be because the students had not participated previously in health education workshops conducted on campuses in Korea. Korean student's confidence with the English language appeared to be an important variable in using or not using the university health services. University health professionals in the United States need to develop better information system for international students so that they may better use the health services provided on campus. Also, university health professionals working on campuses in Korea need to put more attention on health of college students and provide on-campus health education workshops which meet the student's needs.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to assess the current educational environment of herbology and the possibility of collaborative learning of herbology with another discipline. This study will present information that can be used to find the direction of further researches and can be applied to the education of herbology. Methods : An online questionnaire was developed with and sent through SurveyMonkey to 242 korean medicine college students in Korea. The questionnaire comprised questions pertaining to herbology education in Korean Medicine universities and international healthcare cooperation education. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were evaluated, and Spearman's correlation coefficients for two types of questions were evaluated. Results : Among the questions about herbology education, those regarding the necessity of learning clinical cases using herbal medicines for preventing infectious diseases were scored the highest. Students were mostly interested in the effects and indications of herbal drugs. Even students answered they did not learn about official development assistance, 79.85% students answered that they were interested in careers related with the international cooperation or willing to participate in the international cooperation. Three types of correlations showed a statistically significant correlation. Conclusions : This study suggests that herbology education about its effects and indications needs further improvement for competency-based education. Furthermore, herbology can play a critical role in competency-based education for Korean medicine students if a well-designed career program is developed for them.
