[ $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Mn_xO_3$ ] cathode as a high performance cathode on YSZ electrolyte was studied by analyzing impedance spectra. It was shown that cathode property of $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Mn_xO_3$ is bet ter than that of$La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$. At $700^{\circ}C$ in air environment, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}O_3$ cathode on CGO- layered YSZ electrolyte showed very low area specific resistance of $0.14{\Omega}cm^2$, which is low enough for intermediate-temperature sol id oxide fuel cells. This is because material properties of ionic conductivity and thermal expansion compatibility with electrolyte were optimized. Judging from activation energy and oxygen part i al pressure dependance of cathode property, it was noted that oxygen surface exchange kinetics is dominantly influential on cathode property in higher temperature region than $700^{\circ}C$ and oxygen self-diffusion in cathode material is more influential in lower temperature region.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are among one of the promising technologies for efficient and clean energy. SOFCs offer several advantages over other types of fuel cells under relatively high temperatures (600℃ to 800℃). However, the thermal behavior of SOFC stacks at high operating temperatures is a serious issue in SOFC development because it can be associated with detrimental thermal stresses on the life span of the stacks. The thermal behavior of SOFC stacks can be influenced by operating or material properties. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the effects of the thermal conductivity of each component (anode, cathode, and electrolyte) on the thermal behavior of samarium-doped ceria-based SOFCs at intermediate temperatures. Computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate SOFC operation at 600℃. The temperature distributions and gradients of a single cell at 0.7 V under different thermal conductivity values are analyzed and discussed to determine their relationship. Simulations reveal that the influence of thermal conductivity is more remarkable for the anode and electrolyte than for the cathode. Increasing the thermal conductivity of the anode by 50% results in a 23% drop in the maximum thermal gradients. The results for the electrolyte are subtle, with a ~67% reduction in thermal conductivity that only results in an 8% reduction in the maximum temperature gradient. The effect of thermal conductivity on temperature gradient is important because it can be used to predict thermal stress generation.
Sr0.92Y0.08TiO3-δ (SYT) was investigated as an alternative anode in humidified CH4 fuel for SOFCs at low temperatures (650 ℃-750 ℃) and compared with the conventional Ni/yttria-stabilized zirconia (Ni/YSZ) anode. The goal of the study was to directly use a hydrocarbon fuel in a SOFC without a reforming process. The cell performance of the SYT anode was relatively low compared with that of the Ni/YSZ anode because of the poor electrochemical catalytic activity of SYT. In the presence of CH4 fuel, however, the cell performance with the SYT anode decreased by 20%, in contrast to the 58% decrease in the case of the Ni/YSZ anode. The severe degradation of cell performance observed with the Ni/YSZ anode was caused by carbon deposition that resulted from methane thermal cracking. Carbon was much less detected in the SYT anode due to the catalytic oxidation. Otherwise, a significant amount of bulk carbon was detected in the Ni/YSZ anode.
Electrical conductivities of complex perovskites, layered perovskite and Sr doped layered perovskite oxides were measured and analyzed for cathode materials of Intermediate Temperature-operating Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFCs). The electrical conductivities of $Sm_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_{3-\delta}$ (x = 0.3 and 0.7) exhibit a metal-insulator transition (MIT) behavior as a function of temperature. However, $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ (SSC55) shows metallic conductivity characteristics and the maximum electrical conductivity value compared to the values of $Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ (PSC55) and $Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ (NSC55). The electrical conductivity of $SmBaCo_2O_{5+\delta}$ (SBCO) exhibits a MIT at about $250^{\circ}C$. The maximum conductivity is 570 S/cm at $200^{\circ}C$ and its value is higher than 170 S/cm over the whole temperature range tested. $SmBa_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_2O_{5+\delta}$ (SBSCO), 0.5 mol% Sr and Ba substituted at the layered perovskite shows a typically metallic conductivity that is very similar to the behavior of the SSC55 cathode, and the maximum and minimum electrical conductivity in the SBSCO are 1280 S/cm at $50^{\circ}C$ and 280 S/cm at $900^{\circ}C$.
A new process to fabricate a composite LSCF-Ag cathode material for SOFCs by electron beam (e-beam) irradiation process has been suggested for operation under intermediate temperature range of $600-700^{\circ}C$. A composite LSCF-Ag cathode with uniformly coated Ag nanoparticles on the surface of the LSCF material was prepared by a facile e-beam irradiation method at room temperature. The morphology of the composite LSCF-Ag material was analyzed using a TEM, FE-SEM, and EDS. The prepared composite LSCF-Ag material can play a significant role in increasing the electro-catalytic activities and reducing the operating temperature of SOFCs. The performance of a tubular single cell prepared using the composite LSCF-Ag cathode, YSZ electrolyte and a Ni/YSZ anode was evaluated at reduced operating temperature of $600-700^{\circ}C$. The micro-structure and chemical composition of the single cell were investigated using a FE-SEM and EDS.

The intermediate operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) have achieved considerable importance in the area of power fabrication. This is because to improve materials compatibility, their long-term stability and cost saving potential. However, to conserve rational cell performance at reduced-temperature regime, cathode performance should be obtained without negotiating the internal resistance and the electrode kinetics of the cell. Recently, double perovskite structure cathodes have been studied with great attention as a potential material for IT-SOFCs. In this study, double-perovskite structured cathodes of $GdBaCoCuO_{5+\delta}$, $GdBaCo_{2/3}Cu_{2/3}Fe_{2/3}O_{5+\delta}$ compositions and $(1-x)GdBaCo_2O_{5+\delta}+xCe_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{1.95}$ (x = 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt.%) composites were evaluated as the cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells(IT-SOFCs). Electrical conductivity of the cathodes were measured by DC 4-probe method, and the thermal expansion coefficient of each sample was measured up to $900^{\circ}C$ by a dilatometer study. Area specific resistances(ASR) of the $GdBaCo_{2/3}Cu_{2/3}Fe_{2/3}O_{5+\delta}$ cathode and 70 wt.% $GdBaCo_2O5+\delta$ + 30wt.% Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 composite cathode on CGO electrolyte substrate were analyzed using AC 3-probe impedance study. The obtained results demonstrate that double perovskite-based compositions are promising cathode materials for IT-SOFCs.
To improve the performance of the anode-supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) which can be operated at an intermediate temperature, the functional layer (FL) is introduced on a anode substrate. And the scandia-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) and samaria-doped ceria (SDC) which have higher ionic conductivity and better chemical stability than yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) are used as material for the anode FL with the Ni, The fabrication process of anode-supported single cell with the anode FL was established and the power density of those was evaluated. As a result, the sample with anode FL (Ni-YSZ) has higher power density than normal cell. The single cell which was composed of the FL (Ni-YSZ) and electrolyte (YSZ) showed about $550mW/cm^2$ of the maximum power density at $650^{\circ}C$ and $1430mW/cm^2$ at $750^{\circ}C$ respectively, In case of the single cell using the ScSZ and SDC as anode FL, the performance of samples decreased rapidly and those showed unstable voltage during long-term test. In case of using methane as a fuel, the cell performance with each FL decreased comparing with $H_2$ fuel. In the region of a high current density, there are large concentration polarizations.
$Gd_2O_3$-doped $CeO_2$(GDC) solid solutions have been considered as a promising materials for electrolytes in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. In this study, the nano-sized GDC powder with average panicle size of 69nm was prepared by a high energy ball milling process and its sintering behavior was investigated. Heat-treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$ of nano-sized GDC powder mixture led to GDC solid-solution. The enhanced densification over 96% of relative density was obtained after sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2h. It was found that the sinterability of GDC powder could be significantly improved by the introduction of a high energy ball milling process.
In this study, the effects of small amounts (${\leq}3\;mol%$) of Li doping on the sintering characteristics and electrochemical performance of $(ZrO_2)_{0.89}(ScO_{1.5})_{0.1}(CeO_2)_{0.01}$ (ScSZ) were investigated. By adding 3 mol% lithium, the densification temperature of ScSZ was reduced from the conventional temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. It was found that Li doping also led to changes in the Zr:Sc ratio at the grain boundaries. Correspondingly, the dispersion of lithium zirconia at the grain boundaries accelerated the growth of ScSZ grains and increased the grain boundary resistance at temperatures below $450^{\circ}C$. At elevated temperatures of $450{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, the electrical conductivity of the ScSZ after doping remained almost unchanged under air and reducing atmospheres. These results suggest that the addition of lithium is promising for use in low temperature co-firing of ScSZ-based components for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.
This study amis to investigate the functional analysis of anode and cathode materials in Anode supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell. The concentration polarization of single cell was investigated with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method for the case of the different morphology by using four types of unit cell and discussed to reduce the concentration polarization. The concentration polarization at anode side effected the voltage loss in Anode supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and increased contact areas between fuel gas and anode side could reduce the concentration polarization. For intermediate temperature operation, Anode-supported single cells with thin electrolyte layer of YSZ (Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia) were fabricated and short stacks were built and evaluated. We also developed diesel and methane autothermal reforming (ATR) reactors in order to provide fuels to SOFC stacks. Influences of the $H_2O/C$ (steam to carbon ratio), $O_2/C$ (oxygen to carbon ratio) and GHSV (Gas Hourly Space Velocity) on performances of stacks have been investigated. Performance of the stack operated with a diesel reformer was lower than with using hydrogen as a fuel due to lower Nernst voltage and carbon formation at anode side. The stack operated with a natural gas reformer showed similar performances as with using hydrogen. Effects of various reformer parameters such as $H_2O/C$ and $O_2/C$ were carefully investigated. It is found that $O_2/C$ is a sensitive parameter to control stack performance.
