  • The values of fracture energy and mechanical flexural strength of Fiber Reinforced Cement (FRC) with polypropylene (PP) fiber modified by Ion Assisted Reaction (JAR), by which functional groups were grafted on the surface of PP fiber, was improved about 2 times as those of fracture energy and flexural strength of cement reinforced by untreated PP fiber. PP fiber was irradiated in O$_2$ environment by Ar$\^$+/ ion. The contact angle of PP treated by IAR decreased largely when compared with untreated PP. From this result, we expected that surface energy and interfacial adhesion force of treated PP fiber increased. The strain hardening occurred in the strain-stress curve of FRC including PP treated by IAR when compared with that of FRC with untreated PP. These enhanced mechanical properties might be due to strong interaction between hydrophilic group on modified PP fiber and hydroxyl group in cement matrix. This hydrophilic group on surface modified PP fiber was confirmed by XPS analysis. We clearly observed hydration products that were fixed at modified PP fiber due to the strong adhesion force of interface in cement reinforced modified PP by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) study.

  • Exfoliated graphite (EFG) with high aspect ratio was incorporated with high density polyethylene (HDPE) for use as high barrier packaging material such as water-sensitivity electric product and pharmaceutical packaging. Also HDPE/EFG nanocomposite films were prepared by adding the compatibilizer for effective dispersion and compatibility. Their chemical properties, crystal structure properties, thermal properties and water barrier properties of as-prepared HDPE/EFG nanocomposite films were investigated as a function of EFG contents. It showed that there is a weak interfacial interaction between HDPE and EFG, however, the water vapor permeations were decreased from 127 to 78 (70 ${\mu}m{\cdot}g/m^2$, $day{\cdot}atm$) by addition of EFG. Especially, the physical properties of HDPE/EFG nanocomposite films were effectively increased up to 0.5 wt%, however, there were no significant improvement of properties in nanocomposite films at the additional EFG loading. To maximize their performance of the nanocomposite films, further research is required to enhance the dispersion of EFG and compatibility of EFG in HDPE matrix.

  • This study demonstrated the in-situ functionalization with polymers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) via emulsion polymerization. Polystyrene-functionalized MWNTs were prepared in an aqueous solution containing styrene monomer, non-ionic surfactant and a cationic coupling agent ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trime-thylammonium chloride (MATMAC)). This process produced an interesting morphology in which the MWNTs, consisting of bead-string shapes or MWNTs embedded in the beads, when polymer beads were sufficiently large, produced nanohybrid material. This morphology was attributed to the interaction between the cationic coupling agent and the nanotube surface which induced polymerization within the hemimicellar or hemicylindrical structures of surfactant micelles on the surface of the nanotubes. In a solution containing MATMAC alone without surfactant, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were not well-dispersed, and in a solution containing only surfactant without MATMAC, polymeric beads were synthesized in isolation from CNTs and continued to exist separately. The incorporation of MATMAC and surfactant together enabled large amounts of CNTs (> 0.05 wt%) to be well-dispersed in water and very effectively encapsulated by polymer chains. This method could be applied to other well-dispersed CNT solutions containing amphiphilic molecules, regardless of the type (i.e., anionic, cationic or nonionic). In this way, the solubility and dispersion of nanotubes could be increased in a solvent or polymer matrix. By enhancing the interfacial adhesion, this method might also contribute to the improved dispersion of nanotubes in a polymer matrix and thus the creation of superior polymer nanocomposites.

  • In this work, the effect of biodegradable poly(butylene succinate)(PBS) in difunctional epoxy(21:P) resin was investigated in terms of rheological properties, cure kinetics, thermal stabilities, and mechanical interfacial properties. Rheological properties of the blend system were measured under isothermal condition using a rheometer. Cross-linking activation energies($\textrm{E}_c$) were determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. The $\textrm{E}_c$ was increased in the presence of 10 wt% PBS as compared with neat 2EP. From the DSC results of the blends, the cure activation energies($\textrm{E}_a$) showed a similar behavior with $\textrm{E}_c$ due to the increased intermolecular interaction between 2EP and PBS. The decomposed activation energies($\textrm{E}_t$) for the thermal stability derived from the integral method of Horowitz-Metzger equation, were also increased in 10 wt% PBS. In addition, 20 wt% PBS showed the highest critical stress intensity factor($\textrm{E}_{IC}$). which was explained by increasing the fracture toughness of the 2EP/PBS blend systems.

  • The prediction of binary droplet collisions is important in the formation of falling drops and the evolution of sprays. The droplet velocity, impact parameter, and drop-size ratio influence the interaction between the droplets. The effect of these parameters results in complicated collision phenomena. Droplet collisions can be classified into four types of interactions: bouncing, coalescence, reflexive separation, and stretching separation. In the present study, the interfacial flow problem of the droplet collision was numerically simulated by using the level set method. 2D axisymmetric simulations on the head-on collisions and 3D simulation on the off-center collisions were performed. The numerical results of droplet behavior after the collision agreed well with the experimental and analytical results. The mixing of the mass of the initial droplets after the collision was also predicted by using different species index of colliding droplets.

  • To improve properties of epoxy composites, surfaces of the illite and carbon nanotube (CNT) were treated by fluorine gas. The fluorinated illite and CNT were then characterized by X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) and the mechanical and thermal properties of their composites were evaluated. The tensile and impact strengths and thermal stability of the composites increased upto about 59%, 18% and 124%, respectively compared to those of the neat epoxy. Improvements of mechanical and thermal properties in the composites were attributed that the fluorination of illite and carbon nanotube helps to enhance the dispersion in epoxy resin and interfacial interaction between them.

  • Alkaline electrolytes consisting of 6 M KOH and polymer (PEO, PVA, and PAAK) are coated on PAN nonwoven fabrics as a separator, and the electrochemical properties of the activated carbon supercapacitor adopting them are investigated in terms of redox behavior, specific capacitance, and interfacial impedance. Although the interaction between polymer and KOH are comparatively inactive in PEO and PVA, PAAK (3 wt.%)-KOH forms a hydrogel phase by active interactions between $COO^-K^+$ in side-chain of PAAK and $K^+OH^-$ from alkaline electrolyte solution, improving ionic conduction of electrolytes and the electrochemical properties of the supercapacitor. As a result, the activated supercapacitor adopting the PAAK-KOH shows the superior specific capacitance of $46.8Fg^{-1}$ at $100mVs^{-1}$.

  • To improve hydrolytic stability of polyurethane (PU) adhesives, a silane coupling agent (SCA) was added. 3-Isocyanatopropyl triethoxy silane (ITS) as a SCA has two functional groups in the main chain and it is used to improve an interfacial interaction between polymer and inorganic material or metal. In this study, PU adhesives with different amounts of ITS from 0 to 1 wt% were synthesized. Pot time, modulus, thermal stablilty, and adhesive force of the obtained samples were measured. The results showed that the adhesives with ITS showed better properties than that of pure one.

  • The representative eco-friendly materials, or bio-composites, were made by incorporating biodegradable polymer of polybutylene succinate (PBS) as the matrix and bamboo flour (BF) as the natural filler. In present study, the effects of content and particle size of natural filler on the bio-composites were carried out around their mechanical, visco-elastic, and thermal properties. By the incorporation of BF, the tensile properties decreased but the viscoelastic and thermal properties revealed positive effect through interaction between the polymer and natural filler. Also, the vulnerability of interfacial adhesion between hydrophobic PBS and hydrophilic BF appeared to adversely affect the properties of bio-composites.

  • Understanding charge transport anisotropy at the interface of conjugated nanostructures basically gives insight into structure-property relationship in organic field-effect transistors (OFET). Here, the anisotropy of the field-effect mobility at the interface between 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) single crystal with cofacial molecular stacks in a-b basal plane and SiO gate dielectric was investigated. A solvent exchange method has been used in order for TIPS-pentacene single crystals to be grown on the surface of SiO2 thin film, corresponding to the charge accumulation at the interface in OFET structure. In TIPS-pentacene OFET, the anisotropy ratio between the highest and lowest measured mobility is revealed to be 5.2. By analyzing the interaction of a conjugated unit in TIPS-pentacene with the nearest neighbor units, the mobility anisotropy can be rationalized by differences in HOMO-level coupling and hopping routes of charge carriers. The theoretical estimation of anisotropy based on HOMO-level coupling is also consistent with the experimental result.
