  • The purpose of this study is to transform questions in the 7th curriculum to open-ended problems and exam students' attitude towards open-ended problems. Research questions in this thesis are as follows: First, to transform questions in the 7th curriculum to open-ended problems and apply to a class in the fourth grade D elementary school. Second, to find how students respond to learning mathematics with open-ended problems. As a result of this study, the following are identified. First, the students showed positive reactions towards learning mathematics with open-ended problems. Those experience with open-ended problems make student solve mathematics problems with interest and confidence. Second, both good and bad students in the math class show interest and concentration toward open-ended problem. But a few students show less interest towards those problems. Third, through discussion about problem-solving with open-ended problems, students take part in math class actively and show respect one another. Fourth, especially students show more interest and confidence towards the open-ended problems transformed from mathematics textbook and like the constructive open-ended problems.

  • For the efficient application of curriculum discretion activity, I developed the program, 'Let's go together', so that curriculum discretion activity can be applied in the classroom. The program consists of several experiences, which are <Man to man paired study>, <the learning materials for Mathematics in our lives>, <the cooperative study in the class> and <the variety experiences about Mathematics>. This study shows the following results: First, T-test about the students' learning attitude and interest in Mathematics, there was dramatic change in students' desire, interest and attitude for mathematics learning. Second, as the role of Baewomi & Dowomi in 'Man to man paired study', Baewomi & Dowomi provided students with confidence of mathematics learning. We were able to ensure this fact from students' essay after the class. Third, teachers found that the number of students who had positive attitude with Self-directed study increased. And students tried to solve mathematical problems by themselves and the time using self-directed learning experience was also increased. This study suggests that there needs more development for learning materials for mathematics in our lives.

  • In this study, in order to use history of mathematics in mathematical learning effectively, we investigate application of history of mathematics shown textbooks in simultaneous equations. History of Mathematics can be used in order to enhance comprehension and increase interest in an introduction to the simultaneous equations. It also can be used to help motivate middle school students to solve the simultaneous equations with much interest during the development phase, and develope open thinking and reflective thinking in the enrichment learning.

  • This paper analysed the mathematical paradoxes which would be based in the probability and statistics. Teachers need to endeavor various data in order to lead student's interest. This paper says mathematical paradoxes in mathematics education makes student have interest and concern when they study mathematics. So, teachers will recognize the need and efficiency of class for using mathematical Paradoxes, students will be promoted to study mathematics by having interest and concern. These study can show the value of paradoxes in the concept of probability and statistics, and illuminate the concept being taught in classroom. Consequently, mathematical paradoxes in mathematics education can be used efficient studying tool.

  • The purpose of this study is to increase the interest in mathematics-related curriculum and improve mathematics academic achievement of H/W majors. Firstly, this paper proposes the educational case study that develops the learner's ability, increases the interest and raises the employment rate in the unfavorable mathematics-related fields for the H/W majors. Secondly, this paper presents the future teaching method on mathematics-related curriculum that applies to the actually teaching-learning based on the computer programming in the field of the H/W. Lastly, this paper suggests the promising pedagogical method for mathematics by using the statistical analyses of academic achievements and surveys in order to present the effective conducting method of mathematics education.

  • Development of new and highly efficient computer technologies are providing schools and homes with faster and multi-functioning computers, and text-oriented education softwares are now being rapidly replaced by multimedia CAI. There are also increasing needs for computer-literate teachers and more effective CAI materials. The goal of this study is to present effective ways to use computers as teaching aids in mathematics classrooms and how computers affect the students' achievement, interest and attitude in mathematics. Theoretical reviews on learning theories of CAI and multimedia were made before designing teaching plans for mathematics classrooms and the plans were applied to classrooms. The result of this study shows that there is a significant difference in achievement between control group and experimental group, and also indicates that CAI increases the students' interest and attitude in mathematics to a certain extent. Although using computers in classrooms are considered to be more effective in teaching than text-oriented lectures, the number of computers in schools is limited and all the students can not take advantage of individualized drill and practice programs or tutorial programs. One way of various solutions to this problem is developing teaching materials for middle or large sized classes and providing teachers with easy-to-carry notebook computers. And also mathematics teachers should be given more chances to train themselves in developing and using CAI materials.

  • Children interest themselves in all different toys they see, before beginning to speak. The psychological reasons for children′s interest in toys have been investigated for a long time. Thus many scientists have studied on the question "what is game?", but they have not reached a consensus yet. Such contradiction may be dependent upon different points of view of the researchers about game. Besides, the view of game of a child and an adult is different too. According to an adult game is a rebirth and escape from monotony. For child it is a work. The aim of this study is to make mathematics regarding a mass of abstract concepts for the students of grade 1-3 of primary school in the concrete operations period, more attractive with the help of educational and instructional games, and to contribute to student′s developing. The capability of thinking and producing by changing abstract concepts into concrete ones.

  • Compared with other subjects, mathematics has great differences in achieve-ment. In hope of solving this problems, most schools try the level-movement learning. Although they say it may have some effect because of its homogeneous group, the level groups still have differences in achievement in their students abilities. So, this study aims to present an appropriate tasks for the advanced, intermediate and beginner groups and to help self-directed learning by selecting an appropriate tasks for the students' own level. To achieve thiese goals, a great deal of level tasks were developed and given to the students. After lettins them an select appropriate tasks for their own level and perform self-directed learning, the tasks were measured carefully for their interest, attitude and achievement in learning. Consequently, we tried a new method to improve uniformity and to turn teacher-centered learning into student-centered learning. The following is the conclusion to this study. First, self-directed learning based on the selection of level tasks has meaningful effects on learning achievement in mathematics, especially for the beginner group. Second, though the above method did not improve an interest for mathematics, but was very effective in the improvement of learning attitudes.

  • This study aims to examine how cooperative teaming of small ability level groups influences the enhancement of their scholastic achievement in mathematics. The conclusions are as follows; 1. The students which participate in cooperative learning in small ability level groups demonstrate academic improvement over those that participate in non-cooperative learning groups. 2. In particular, this method is more effective for high-level classes, than for middle or low-level students. 3. The learners' perception, interest and attitude towards mathematics has not changed through their placement in small ability groups involved in cooperative activities.
