  • The study applied a narrative inquiry to the undergraduate interdisciplinary course taught for three years(2012~2014). Narratively I have described interactions among teachers' and students' performing the interdisciplinary consilience course with various situations such as place, curriculum and class interaction. I have specifically illuminated a three-dimensional narrative inquiry space embracing the dilemma of the consilience curriculum, PBL(Problem Based Learning) and TBL(Team Based Learning), and an effective presentation. The result of the study is as follows: First, the ratio of giving lecture is high. The burden of doing project will be reduce if the teacher decreases the lecture up to one fourth, gives students enough time to finish their tasks, and gives them advice for a better project. Second, for opening the interdisciplinary consilience class maintaining previous college curriculum, each department has to put a 'consilience course' on the existing curriculum that allows teachers open the consilience course whenever they need to teach with other department teachers. Third, an effective teaching method using the PBL(Problem Based Learning) in Team Based Learning environment is making students to consider projects as problem situations to solve and to apply the problem situations to PBL method. Lastly, teachers should give students lots of opportunities for presenting what they have learned in the class. Three times of presentation as a team member is ideal in a semester but the way of presenting has to be changed. The students in next year will relieve the tension of 30 minute instead of 15 minute, two days instead of one day for the team presentation.

  • The intersection between mathematics and biology is rapidly expanding. The purpose of this paper is to develop college mathematics curriculum to improve the quantitative and mathematical skills of life & biological science students, and to help them better appreciate the importance and utility of mathematics. We deal with 4 questions. We first study how mathematics plays an important role in biological education and the history of biology. Secondly, we do a case study about partnership between mathematics and biology societies not only in university but in highschool of US, specially via Bio2010 and Math & Bio2010. We then investigate a way to enhance new mathematics curriculum as a service in biological science. Finally, we survey university students' basic background in order to determine the level of curriculum. From our investigation, we suggest some points to renew curriculum.

  • For STEM education science teachers usually choose topics which are related to both science and other disciplinary contents. Nevertheless it is not clear for the teachers to adopt what kind of criteria for their choices. Interdisciplinary teaching is not a mixture of science content with another one from different disciplines as resources for the content teaching. Instead the criteria and perspectives for the integration need to be clearly defined. In this study we investigated how to integrate science and other disciplines in terms of interdisciplinary teaching. Family resemblance approach by Wittgenstein, recently revised by Erduran and Dagher, was applied to comparative analysis of science, math, and physical education curriculum documents in Korea. Aim and value, methodological rules and methods, knowledge, and activities in each discipline were compared and analyzed with the view of FRA. Results of the study described alternative criteria of how to find appropriate topics for interdisciplinary teaching.

  • The purpose of this article was to develop an interdisciplinary program for the aged living welfare in College of Home Economics. This program was developed through the analysis of gerontology curriculum in Korea, Japan, and America, and survey research with social workers who were working in the welfare institutes for the elderly in Korea. Moreover, an interdisciplinary program for the aged living welfare was designed based on the professional role of elderly care and the scope of educational context which were identified. Particular note was that this program could be most effectively implemented in the College of Home Economics. Recommendations for the development and implementation of the program were highlighted.

  • The design of learning environments which encourage students to work in a creative manner on mathematical problems is a creative process in itself. The concept of the Saturday University program is described in which pre-service teachers are guided at teaching students in extra-curriculum activities on interdisciplinary topics. In the process of the didactical reconstruction of mathematical problems, the pre-service teachers go through the stages of a revolving door model y.

  • The purpose of this paper was to compare and analyze the elementary curriculum and textbook integration of social studies in Korea, USA, and England in terms of content integration and to make suggestions for the improvement of Korean social studies curriculum and textbooks. For this study, social studies curriculum and textbooks of three different countries were analyzed according to the three criteria: sequence, types and focus of integration. In this comparative study, five suggestions were made for the improvement of the Korean elementary social studies curriculum and textbooks. First, Korean social studies curriculum should have a subject focus at each grade level. Second, it is recommended that Korean social studies curriculum should present clear interrelations among geography, history, and civics at each grade level. Third, Korean social studies curriculum needs to have diverse criteria on which to select and organize themes. Fourth, Korean social studies textbooks need to have increased number of interdisciplinary large units. Fifth, it is necessary that the authors of Korean social studies textbooks integrate contents in consideration of students' life context in order to raise the relevance of the contents of history and geography.

  • The purpose of this study is to discuss the issues and problems of interior design education in Korea and to further present guidelines for curriculum development and research on interior design education in Korea for the 21st Century. Content analysis and scholastic inquiry from various sources were used to examine the issues concerning 1) professional identity, 2) curriculum structure, and 3) creative scholarship including interdisciplinary approach. Identification of these issues presented in this study will allow interior design educators to help prepare interior design students who are qualified to lead the profession in the future.

  • Purpose: This study is purposed to analyze the curriculum on medical humanity and social science in foreign medical schools. The Main topics are classified into three parts: the characteristics of American medical humanity and social science curriculum: understanding of medical humanity and social science in medical school in USA, UK, and Australia: standard recommendations on medical ethics and professionalism in curriculum design. Methods: The literature reviews and on-line searching were conducted to collect the information and data on medical humanity and social science in foreign medical schools, 9 medical schools were selected in terms of reputations in USA, UK, and Australia. Results: First, American medical humanity and social science curriculum have changed, especially from cores to electives, from informal to formal and from subjects to interdisciplinary. In addition. teaching methods have changed into small-group discussion and teaching materials into various sources, such as essays, poetry, films and so forth. Second, most medical schools had their own unique curriculum adjusted to their academic traditions. Especially, curriculum of UK and Australia were more integrated than those of USA. Finally, it is recommended that standards of medical ethics and professionalism have to be considered in curriculum design. Conclusion: It is suggested that medical humanity and social science curriculum be designed closely connecting with clinical medicine.
