Haptic Simulation for Deformable Object with s-FEM (s-FEM을 이용한 변형체 햅틱 시뮬레이션)

  • Accurate and fast haptic simulations of deformable objects are desired in many applications such as medical virtual reality. In haptic interactions with a coarse model, the number of nodes near the haptic interaction region is too few to generate detailed deformation. Thus, local refinement techniques need to be developed. Many approaches have employed purely geometric subdivision schemes, but they are not proper in describing the deformation behavior of deformable objects. This paper presents a continuum mechanics-based finite element adaptive method to perform haptic interaction 'with a deformable object. This method superimposes a local fine mesh upon a global coarse model, which consists of the entire deformable object. The local mesh and the global mesh are coupled by the s-version finite element method (s-FEM), which is generally used to enhance accurate solutions near the target points even more. The s-FEM can demonstrate a reliable deformation to users in real-time.

  • World health organization has recently published a strategic plan for the development and promotion of traditional system of medicine. Herbal pathies especially Unani and Ayurvedic systems of medicines have great scope in this aspect. But, there are several problems with these pathies in the current era, as the way of research and identification is still on classical system. The correct identification of medicinal plant is one of the major problems in both the system. This should be corrected with the modern tools and techniques. The various types of data including recent discoveries, economical growth, ethnobotanical literature and extremely rapid increase in herbal journals and books have emerged great scope for these pathies. At the same time several challenges and threats are present including herb-drug interaction, false reports, toxicity studies etc. In this review paper, opportunities, threats, and researches to be focused will be discussed.

Vision-Based Haptic Interaction Method for Telemanipulation: Macro and Micro Applications (원격조작을 위한 영상정보 기반의 햅틱인터렉션 방법: 매크로 및 마이크로 시스템 응용)

  • Haptic rendering is a process that provides force feedback during interactions between a user and an object. This paper presents a haptic rendering technique for a telemanipulation system of deformable objects using image processing and physically based modeling techniques. The interaction forces between an instrument driven by a haptic device and a deformable object are inferred in real time based on a continuum mechanics model of the object, which consists of a boundary element model and ${\alpha}$ priori knowledge of the object's mechanical properties. Macro- and micro-scale experimental systems, equipped with a telemanipulation system and a commercial haptic display, were developed and tested using silicone (macro-scale) and zebrafish embryos (micro-scale). The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the algorithm in different scales: two experimental systems applied the same algorithm provided haptic feedback regardless of the system scale.

Human Hand Detection Using Color Vision (컬러 시각을 이용한 사람 손의 검출)

  • The visual sensing of human hands plays an important part in many man-machine interaction/interface systems. Most existing visionbased hand detection techniques depend on the color cues of human skin. The RGB color image from a vision sensor is often transformed to another color space as a preprocessing of hand detection because the color space transformation is assumed to increase the detection accuracy. However, the actual effect of color space transformation has not been well investigated in literature. This paper discusses a comparative evaluation of the pixel classification performance of hand skin detection in four widely used color spaces; RGB, YIQ, HSV, and normalized rgb. The experimental results indicate that using the normalized red-green color values is the most reliable under different backgrounds, lighting conditions, individuals, and hand postures. The nonlinear classification of pixel colors by the use of a multilayer neural network is also proposed to improve the detection accuracy.

  • A flow analysis is performed in the present study for the moving body problem by proposing a mesh transformation method for the movement of the body in the fluid medium. Unlike other moving mesh techniques, a mesh itself is not moving but changes its property as time marches in a mesh transformation method. The flow field results are compared with those by other moving mesh technique, and showed good agreements. The movement of a floatable body in the flow field caused by the moving body is also studied in the present study by using a mesh transformation technique and a fluid/structure interaction method.

  • The interaction between curcumin(1,7-bis[4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) and ethylamines was studied in DMSO:$H_2O$(5:1, v/v) using absorption and fluorescence measurements. The association constant, $K_{ass}$, and the Stern-Volmer constants were calculated by the Benesi-Hildebrand and Stern-Volmer equation, respectively. Curcumin displayed marked UV-Vis absorption changes and highly responsive fluorescence quenching in the presence of ethylamine and the quenching ability was enhanced almost linearly with the concentration of ethylamines. The apparent Stern-Volmer constant measured for the ethylamine-curcumin system was about 1000-fold greater than that of the triethylamine-curcumin system, indicating considerably greater quenching efficiency of ethylamines.

  • Binding of dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) to human and bovine hemoglobin and globin samples has been investigated in 50 mM glycine buffer pH = 10, I = 0.0318 and 300 K by equilibrium dialysis and temperature scanning spectrophotometry techniques and method for calculation of average hydrophobicity. The binding data has been analyzed, in terms of binding capacity concept $({\theta})$, Hill coefficient (nH) and intrinsic Gibbs free energy of binding $({\Delta}Gbv).$ The results of binding data, melting point (Tm) and average hydrophobicity show that human hemoglobin has more structural stability than bovine hemoglobin sample. Moreover the results of binding data analysis represent the systems with two and one sets of binding sites for hemoglobin and globin, respectively. It seems that the destabilization of hemoglobin structure due to removal of heme group, is responsible of such behavior. The results indicating the removal of heme group from hemoglobin caused the depletion of first binding set as an electrostatic site upon interaction with DTAB and exposing the hydrophobic patches for protein.

  • Reinforced earth structure has been regarded as general structure in order to achieve efficient land utilization as well as securing safety in railway service lines in other countries, but there are no construction actual results in Korea. In this study, the soil-geogrid interaction mechanism was investigated experimentally and numerical analysis was performed to predict Pull-out behaviour of geogrid embedded in reinforced earth body. This experimental data and analysis result can not contribute to understand the soil-geogrid interaction mechanism at soil-geogrid interface but also be used in design practice of the railway reinforced earth structures.

  • The main purpose of flavor research using conventional extraction methods, such as solvent extraction, distillation, and dynamic headspace, is to effectively extract, identify, and quantify flavor volatiles present in food matrices. In recent flavor research, the importance of understanding flavor release during mastication is increasing, because only volatiles available in the headspace contribute to the perception of food 'flavors'. Odor potency differs among flavor volatiles, and the physicochemical characteristics of flavor volatiles affect their release behavior and interaction with various food matrices. In this review, a general overview of flavor release and flavor-food interactions within frozen dessert systems is given with emphasis on chemical, physiological, and perceptual aspects. Chemical and sensory analysis methods competent for investigating such flavor-food interactions are illustrated. Statistical analysis techniques recommended for data acquired from such experiments are also discussed.

  • Human Computer Interaction is rapidly growing in different aspects and areas. One of the areas that grab many scholars and researchers interest is usability. Usability is a main factor and critical pillar of products success and acceptance. In this paper, we deeply analyze the current usability models that measure the user performance during the interaction with products. Then, we fairly compare between each model to discover and present the strength and weakness of each model for supporting developer and business organization with guidelines during the development process of the products before launching the actual and final one. Decomposing comparison between each model is performed based on specific criteria. Comparison is tabulated, graphically depicted, and analytically decomposed.
