Segmentation of Millimeter-wave Radiometer Image via Classuncertainty and Region-homogeneity

  • Thresholding is a popular image segmentation method that converts a gray-level image into a binary image. The selection of optimum threshold has remained a challenge over decades. Many image segmentation techniques are developed using information about image in other space rather than the image space itself. Most of the technique based on histogram analysis information-theoretic approaches. In this paper, the criterion function for finding optimal threshold is developed using an intensity-based classuncertainty (a histogram-based property of an image) and region-homogeneity (an image morphology-based property). The theory of the optimum thresholding method is based on postulates that objects manifest themselves with fuzzy boundaries in any digital image acquired by an imaging device. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated on experimental data obtained by W-band millimeter-wave radiometer image under different noise level.

The Minimum Dwell Time Algorithm for the Poisson Distribution and the Poisson-power Function Distribution

  • We consider discrimination curve and minimum dwell time for Poisson distribution and Poisson-power function distribution. Let the random variable X has Poisson distribution with mean .lambda.. For the hypothesis testing H$\_$0/:.lambda. = t vs. H$\_$1/:.lambda. = d (d$\_$0/ if X.leq.c. Since a critical value c can not be determined to satisfy both types of errors .alpha. and .beta., we considered discrimination curve that gives the maximum d such that it can be discriminated from t for a given .alpha. and .beta.. We also considered an algorithm to compute the minimum dwell time which is needed to discriminate at the given .alpha. and .beta. for the Poisson counts and proved its convergence property. For the Poisson-power function distribution, we reject H$\_$0/ if X.leq..'{c}.. Since a critical value .'{c}. can not be determined to satisfy both .alpha. and .beta., similar to the Poisson case we considered discrimination curve and computation algorithm to find the minimum dwell time for the Poisson-power function distribution. We prosent this algorithm and an example of computation. It is found that the minimum dwell time algorithm fails for the Poisson-power function distribution if the aiming error variance .sigma.$\^$2/$\_$2/ is too large relative to the variance .sigma.$\^$2/$\_$1/ of the Gaussian distribution of intensity. In other words, if .ell. is too small, we can not find the minimum dwell time for a given .alpha. and .beta..

생체조직내 레이저 광 밀도 향상을 위한 압력 인가형 저출력 레이저 프로브 (A Pressure Applied Low-Level Laser Probe to Enhance Laser Photon Density in Soft Tissue)

  • Laser has been widely used in various fields of medicine. Recently, noninvasive low-level laser therapeutic medical devices have been introduced in market. However, low-level laser cannot deliver enough photon density to expect positive therapeutic results in deep tissue layer due to the light scattering property in tissue. In order to overcome the limitation, this study was aimed to develop a negative pressure applied low-level laser probe to optimize laser transmission pattern and therefore, to improve photon density in soft tissue. In order to evaluate the possibility of clinical application of the developed laser probe, ex-vivo experiments were performed with porcine skin samples and laser transmissions were quantitatively measured as a function of tissue compression. The laser probe has an air suction hole to apply negative pressure to skin, a transparent plastic body to observe variations of tissue, and a small metallic optical fiber guide to support the optical fiber when negative pressure was applied. By applying negative pressure to the laser probe, the porcine skin under the metallic optical fiber guide is compressed down and, at the same time, low-level laser is emitted into the skin. Finally, the diffusion images of laser in the sample were acquired by a CCD camera and analyzed. Compared to the peak intensity without the compression, the peak intensity of laser increased about $2{\sim}2.5$ times and FWHM decreased about $1.67{\sim}2.85$ times. In addition, the laser peak intensity was positively and linearly increased as a function of compression. In conclusion, we verified that the developed low-level laser probe can control the photon density in tissue by applying compression, and therefore, its potential for clinical applications.

퍼지 소속 함수를 애용한 개선된 이진화 방법 (Enhanced Binarization Method using Fuzzy Membership Function)

  • 대부분의 이진화 알고리즘은 임계치를 결정하기 위하여 히스토그램을 사용하여 밝기 분포를 분석한다. 배경과 물체의 명도차이가 큰 경우에는 양봉 형태의 히스토그램이 나타나며 최적의 임계치를 찾기 위해 히스토그램 골짜기를 선택하는 것만으로도 양호한 임계치 결과를 얻을 수 있다. 반면에 배경과 물체의 밝기 차이가 크지 않거나 밝기 분포가 양봉 특성을 보이지 않을 때는 히스토그램 분석만으로 적절한 임계치를 얻기 어렵다 본 논문에서는 RGB 컬러 모형의 각 색상에 대하여 퍼지 소속 함수를 적용하고, 그 결과를 이용해 배경에 비해 가독성이 높은 특징들을 배경과 분리하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 이진화 방법은 RGB의 각 색상에 퍼지 소속 함수를 적용하여 얻은 값들을 이용해 이진화한다. 기존의 임계치를 이용한 이진화 방법에 비해 잡음 영역을 상당히 제거 할 수 있으며, 운송 컨테이너 영상에 적용한 결과, 기존의 방법에 비해 효율적인 것을 확인하였다.

비균질 재료에서의 균열거동평가를 위한 멀티스케일 수치해석 (Multiscale Simulation for a Crack Behavior in Heterogeneous Materials)

  • Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) as advanced heterogeneous composite materials have a higher performance than a conventional composite or bimaterial composite under some severe environments. As a heterogeneous material, FGM is commonly used in spacecraft, defense, nuclear and automotive industries due to its excellent properties. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the stress distribution and crack behaviors by the multiscale simulation. FGM contains two or more than two materials that the composition is structured continuously. Two types of FGM model are suggested, which are created by arbitrary prediction of the volume fraction and the exponential function. Aluminum as the metal matrix constituent and silicon carbide as the ceramic particle constituent are structured gradually by two types and the three point bending test also estimated. Moreover, two kinds of crack location were introduced in order to get the influences of material property distribution on the stress intensity factor. From the results we found that the stress intensity factors are increased in the case from softer to stiffer material, while vice versa.

신경 제어 기법을 이용한 ER 밸브-실린더 시스템의 위치 제어 (Position Control of ER Valve-Cylinder System Via Neural Control Technique)

  • This paper presents an active position control of a single-rod cylinder system featuring an electrorheological(ER) fluid-based valve. The ER fluid consisting of silicone oil and chemically treated particles is firstly composed and its Bingham property is tested as a function of imposed electric field. A multi-channel plate type of ER valve is then designed and manufactured on the basis of the field-dependent Bingham model. Performance test of the ER valve is undertaken by evaluating pressure drop with respect to the number of electrode as well as the intensity of the electric field. Subsequently, the ER valve-cylinder system is constructed and its governing equation of motion is derived. A neural control scheme for position control of the cylinder is formulated by incorporating proportional-plus-derivative(PD) controller and implemented. Experimental results of both regulating and tracking control responses are presented in order to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed ER valve-cylinder control system.

  • An electrical stimulator was designed to induce locomotion for paraplegic patients caused by central nervous system injury. Optimal stimulus parameters, which can minimize muscle fatigue and can achieve effective muscle contraction were determined in slow and fast muscles in Sprague-Dawley rats. Stimulus patterns of our stimulator were designed to simulate electromyographic activity monitored during locomotion of normal subjects. Muscle types of the lower extremity were classified according to their mechanical property of contraction, which are slow muscle (msoleus m.) and fast muscle (medial gastrocneminus m., rectus femoris m., vastus lateralis m.). Optimal parameters of electrical stimulation for slow muscles were 20 Hz, 0.2 ms square pulse. For fast muscle, 40 Hz, 0.3 ms square pulse was optimal to produce repeated contraction. Higher stimulus intensity was required when synergistic muscles were stimulated simultaneously than when they were stimulated individually. Electrical stimulation for each muscle was designed to generate bipedal locomotion, so that individual muscles alternate contraction and relaxation to simulate stance and swing phases. Portable electrical stimulator with 16 channels built in microprocessor was constructed and applied to paraplegic patients due to lumbar cord injury. The electrical stimulator restored partially gait function in paraplegic patients.

Lane Detection Using Road Geometry Estimation

  • This paper describes how a priori road geometry and its estimation may be used to detect road boundaries and lane markings in road scene images. We assume flat road and road boundaries and lane markings are all Bertrand curves which have common principal normal vectors. An active contour is used for the detection of road boundary, and we reconstruct its geometric property and make use of it to detect lane markings. Our approach to detect road boundary is based on minimizing energy function including edge related term and geometric constraint term. Lane position is estimated by pixel intensity statistics along the parallel curve shifted properly from boundary of the road. We will show the validity of our algorithm by processing real road images.

  • MI(Magneto-Impedance) sensor which is made by thin films has significantly high detecting sensitivity in weak magnetic field. It also has a merit to be able to build in the low power system. Its structure is simple, which makes it easier to prepare a miniature. In this study, its magnetic permeability and anisotropy field$(H_k)$ as a function of a thickness of sputtered amorphous CoZrNb films with zero-magnetostriction and excellent soft magnetic property are investigated. In order to make a uniaxial anisotropy, film was subjected to the post annealing in a static magnetic field with 1KOe intensity at 250, 300, and $320^{\circ}C}$ respectively for 2 hours. Anisotropy field$(H_k)$ of film is measured by using a MH loop tracer. Its magnetic permeability of a film is measured over the frequency range from 1 MHz to 750MHz. It has shown that the magnetic permeability of amorphous CoZrNb film is decreased due to the skin effect with increasing a thickness of the CoZrNb film, and hence its driving frequency is lowered. And, it was examined on the permeability and impedance to fabricate the MI sensor which acts at a low frequency by thickening a CoZrNb film relatively.

  • 소프트웨어 제품을 개발하여 테스팅을 거친 후 사용자에게 인도하는 시기를 결정하는 일은 아주 실제적이고 흥미 있는 일이 된다. 이러한 문제를 소프트웨어 최적 방출시기라고 한다. 본 연구에서는 소프트웨어의 결함을 제거하거나 수정 작업 중에도 새로운 결함이 발생될 가능성이 있는 무한고장수를 가진 비동질적인 포아송 과정에 기초하고 고장간격 수명 시간의 형태에 따른 방출시간의 비교에 대하여 연구되었다. 소프트웨어 요구 신뢰도를 만족시키고 소프트웨어 개발및 유지 총비용을 최소화시키는 최적 소프트웨어 방출 정책이 된다. 본 논문의 수치적인 예에서는 모의실험 자료 즉, 강도함수가 일정한 경우, 증가하는 경우, 감소하는 경우를 적용하여 최적 방출시기를 추정하고 그 결과를 나열 하였다.
