  • This paper proposes a Distributed Autonomous Robotic System(DARS) based on an Artificial Immune System(AIS) and a Classifier System(CS). The behaviors of robots in the system are divided into global behaviors and local behaviors. The global behaviors are actions to search tasks in environment. These actions are composed of two types: aggregation and dispersion. AIS decides one among these two actions, which robot should select and act on in the global. The local behaviors are actions to execute searched tasks. The robots learn the cooperative actions in these behaviors by the CS in the local. The proposed system is more adaptive than the existing system at the viewpoint that the robots learn and adapt the changing of tasks.

  • This paper specifies a collision alarm using an infrared distance sensor that can identify the dangerousness of collision of active mobile robotic systems to various objects, such as unknown objects or another robots. And we analyse the major operating signals and features of the collision alarm for effective industrial applications. For the purpose, we consider a typical parking situation of a mobile robotic system with the collision alarm designed. As a result, it is shown that the proposed collision alarm is applicable for effective collision avoidance and safe driving of various mobile robots or vehicles.

  • This paper presents a robotic foot mechanism based on truss structure for walking robots and analyzes its effectiveness for compliant walking. The specified foot mechanism has been modeled by observing the structure and behavior of human foot. The frame of bone used in the human foot is considered as a truss, and the ligaments of the human foot are represented as a simple stiffness element. So such a robotic foot has an advantage to moderate the impact of foot when a walking robot takes a step. As a result, it is practically expected that the proposed robotic foot mechanism can contribute to reduce the physical fatigue of walking robots.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate performances of mobile personal robots. A set of performance measures is proposed and the corresponding evaluation methods are developed. Different from industrial manipulators, personal robots need to be evaluated with its mobility, navigation, task and intelligent performance in environments where human beings exist. The proposed performance measures are composed of measures for mobility including vibration, repeatability, path accuracy and so on, as well as measures for navigation performance including wall following, overcoming doorsill, obstacle avoidance and localization. But task and intelligent behavior performances such as cleaning capability and high-level decision-making are not considered in this paper. To measure the proposed performances through a series of tests, we designed a test environment and developed measurement systems including a 3D Laser tracking system, a vision monitoring system and a vibration measurement system. We measured the proposed performances with a mobile robot to show the result as an example. The developed systems, which are installed at Korea Agency for Technology and Standards, are going to be used for many robot companies in Korea.

  • Technologies related to sealed-type ultrasonic sensors and driving circuit modules for them are the key elements for intelligent robot industry. Those technologies are believed to yield a drastic enhancement of the performance measuring distances in the intelligent robot systems. Modulization technologies of ultrasonic sensors are expected to develop ASIC and MEMS technologies in the future. The size of domestic market for sealed-type ultrasonic sensor modules is expected to grow to 1 billion and 5.72 billion Won by 2008 and 2012, respectively. Recent interest to service robots and government-driven programs are promoting the rapid growth of the market for the service robots. Successful application of the sealed-type ultrasonic modules to the service robots is expected to replace the conventional photo-sensors in a near future.

  • Service robots providing services according to user's needs in dynamically changing environments should be able to utilize external services such as cloud services. Cloud services are, however, changing and expanding continuously and thus the interface to the services must be general and flexible to adapt to the changes of the functionality and data of the services. In order to facilitate the adaptation of the interface to the changes, a model-based general interface to various cloud services is proposed. In this approach, a general and extensible interface is realized by defining standard service profiles that can be easily extended to adapt to the changed services. Experiments with intelligent service robots show satisfying results exhibiting flexible adaptations to new or changed external services.

  • In this paper, we propose a optimal deployment method for cooperative exploration of swarm robots. The proposed method consists of two parts such as optimal deployment and path planning. The optimal area deployment is proposed by the K-mean Algorithm and Voronoi tessellation. The path planning is proposed by the potential field method and A* Algorithm. Finally, the numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

  • Visions of ubiquitous robotics and ambient intelligence involve distributing information, knowledge, computation over a wide range of servers and data storage devices located all over the world, and integrating tiny microprocessors, actuators, and sensors into everyday objects as well in order to make them smart. In this paper, we introduce our ongoing research effort aimed at realizing ubiquitous robots in an information structured space. For this, a ubiquitous space and ambient intelligent systems for a librarian robot are introduced and the RFID technology based approach for these systems is described.

  • In this study, we analyze the balance of quadruped walking robots. For this purpose, a simplified polygonal model of a quadruped walking configuration is considered. A boundary-range-based balance margin is used for determining the system stability of the polygonal walking configuration considered herein. The balance margin enables the estimation of the walking configuration's balance for effective walking. The usefulness of the balance margin is demonstrated through exemplary simulations. Furthermore, balance compensation by means of foot stepping is addressed.
