  • Optical microscopes integrated with CCD cameras are widely used for automatic inspection of precision circuit patterns fabricated on glass masks and silicon wafers. For this application it is important to position the object always is focus so that the image appears in good quality while the microscope scans the object. However, as the magnification of the microscope is taken large for fine resolution the depth of focus becomes small, often in submicron ranges, requiring special care in focusing. This study proposes a new auto-focusing method, which can be readily incorporated in existing optical configuration of microscope. This method is based on optical triangulation using a separate beam of laser and two photodiodes, eliminating focus errors caused by surface roughness and waviness. Experimental results prove that the method can produce focus error signals which are very sensitive with a resolution of 5 nm within 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ accuracy.

  • Polymeric optical waveguide devices with Bragg gratings have been investigated, for implementing tunable lasers and wavelength filters used in wavelength-division-multiplexed optical communication systems. Owing to the excellent thermo-optic effect of these polymers, wavelength tuning is possible over a wide range, which is difficult to achieve using other optical materials. In this study the phase-mask technology, which has advantages over the conventional interferometeric method, was introduced to facilitate the fabrication of Bragg gratings in polymeric optical waveguide devices. An optical setup capable of fabricating multiple Bragg gratings simultaneously on a 4-inch silicon wafer was constructed, using a 442-nm laser and phase mask. During fabrication, some of the diffracted light in the phase mask was totally reflected inside the mask, which affected the quality of the Bragg grating adversely, so experiments were conducted to solve this issue. To verify grating uniformity, two types of wavelength-filtering devices were fabricated using the phase-mask lithography, and their reflection and transmission spectra were measured. From the results, we confirmed that the phase-mask method provides good uniformity, and may be applied for mass production of polymer Bragg-grating waveguide devices.

  • We present the fabrication and measured performance of a wavelength tunable Butt coupled DBR-LD. An average coupling efficiency between active layer and passive waveguide layer was measured over 85%per facet, and the average threshold current was 21 ㎃ for the waveguide integrated DBR laser. High output power of Butt coupled DBR-LD was obtained over 25 ㎽. As high as 25 ㎽ of output power was achieved by the butt coupled method. The maximum wavelength tuning range is about 7.4 nm, and the side mode suppression ratio was more than 40 ㏈ using 1.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ InGaAsP waveguide layer.

  • An integrated photonic K-band microwave bandpass filter has been proposed and demonstrated by incorporating a polymeric ring resonator. Its transfer characteristics were adjusted by shilling the resonance wavelength of the ring resonator via the thermooptic effect. The achieved performance of the filter includes the center frequency of 20 GHz, the attenuation of ${\sim}15dB$, the bandwidth of 2 GHz, and the corresponding quality factor of 10. The microwave output power within the passband of the device was adjusted at the rate of about 6.7 dB/mW in the range of 27 dB. This kind of device with electrically controllable transfer characteristics can be applied to implement microwave switches and other devices.

  • We propose a nearly lossless, compact, electrically modulated vertical directional coupler, which is based on the controllable evanescent coupling in a previously proposed graphene-assisted total internal reflection (GA-FTIR) scheme. In the proposed device, two single-mode waveguides are separate by graphene-$SiO_2$-graphene layers. By changing the chemical potential of the graphene layers with a gate voltage, the coupling strength between the waveguides, and hence the coupling length of the directional coupler, is controlled. Therefore, for a properly chosen, fixed device length, when an input wave is launched into one of the waveguides, the ratio of their output powers can be controlled electrically. The operation of the proposed device is analyzed, with the dispersion relations calculated using a model of a one-dimensional slab waveguide. The supermodes in the coupled waveguide are calculated using the finite-element method to estimate the coupling length, realistic devices are designed, and their performance was confirmed using the finite-difference time-domain method. The designed $3{\mu}m$ by $1{\mu}m$ device achieves an insertion loss of less than 0.11 dB, and a 24-dB extinction ratio between bar and cross states. The proposed low-loss device could enable integrated modulation of a strong optical signal, without thermal buildup.

  • A novel approach for frequency-tripling vector signal generation via balanced detection without precoding and optical filter is proposed. The scheme is mainly utilizing an integrated dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DPQPSK) modulator. In the DPQPSK modulator, one QPSK modulator is driven by an RF signal to generate high-order optical sidebands, while the other QPSK modulator is modulated by I/Q data streams to produce baseband vector signal as an optical carrier. After that, a frequency-tripling 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16QAM) vector millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal can be obtained by balanced detection. The proposed scheme can reduce the complexity of transmitter digital signal processing. The results show that, a 4 Gbaud baseband 16QAM vector signal can be generated at 30 GHz by frequency-tripling. After 10 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission, the constellation and eye diagrams of the generated vector signal perform well and a bit-error-rate (BER) below than 1e-3 can be achieved.

  • Ferroelectric particles have been applied in the photocatalytic field because the spontaneous polarization results in the internal electric field, which can accelerate the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. In this study, the $BaTiO_3$ (BT) fibers are synthesized by electrospinning. The BT fibers calcined above $800^{\circ}C$ exhibit a strong ferroelectric property, which is verified by a typical butterfly-shaped displacement-voltage loop. It is found that the BT fibers with the single-domain structure exhibit better photocatalytic performance than that with the multi-domain configuration. When the single-domain transforms into multi-domain, the integrated internal electric field correspondingly breaks up, inducing that the internal electric field might cancel each other out and diminish the separation of photogenerated carriers. Also, the Au nanoparticles can improve the photocatalytic activity further on account of the surface plasmon resonance. Therefore, it is suggested that Au nanoparticles decorated on ferroelectric BT nanomaterials are promising photocatalysts.

  • Metal-halide perovskite (MHP) solar cell is a promising candidate for next-generation flexible devices and the BIPV (Building-integrated photovoltaics) because it can exhibit high power conversion efficiencies over 23%, good bendability and low processing cost. However, MHP solar cells are commonly fabricated by the spin coating that is not a reliable method to produce large-scale commercial solar cells. A shear coating can be one of the potential candidates for the large-scale deposition method of MHP films. In this work, the influences of the process parameters such as solvents of precursor solution, substrate temperature, concentrations of precursor solution, and annealing time on the thin film growth of MHP were investigated for the shear coating process. This study presents the possibility of the shear coating process for large-scaled perovskite film fabrication and reveals the role of process condition in the thin film growth of perovskites.

  • When elemental images are remapped to solve the depth conversion in integral imaging, the integrated image is inevitably accompanied by discontinuity. This paper analyzes the discontinuity factor caused by elemental-image remapping, to validate the reduction of the discontinuity through converging pick-up and reconstruction of the three-dimensional image in real and virtual modes simultaneously. The validity of the proposed method is quantitatively verified when compared with the conventional parallel pick-up.
