  • We propose and implement a single-wire communication protocol for thermal management systems using thin film thermoelectric modules for 3D IC cooling. The proposed single-wire communication protocol connects the temperature sensors, located near hot spots, to measure the local temperature of the chip. A unique ID number identifying the location of each hot spot is assigned to each temperature sensor. The prototype chip was fabricated by a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS MPW process, and the operation of the chip is verified.

  • In a large 3D printer when the cooler, which cools the filament, acts in one direction, the area directly exposed to the cooling is cooled to the proper temperature. However, the cooling effect on the opposite area is relatively less. It was found in experiments that filaments with a thickness of over 2 mm exhibit the cooling problem in one directional cooling. Consequently, cooling was performed to prevent the flow-down and to produce firm support leading to an improvement in product quality in extrusion. Further, the lay-up of a 3D printer with five guides combined with a duct was achieved. Analysis showed that the improvement in the cooling effect enables stable extrusion and lay-up and thus, reduces fabrication time.

  • Many researchers have studied on the methods to improve the processor performance. However, high integrated semiconductor technology for improving the processor performance causes many problems such as battery life, high power density, hotspot, etc. Especially, as hotspot has critical impact on the reliability of chip, thermal problems should be considered together with performance and power consumption when designing high-performance processors. To alleviate the thermal problems of processors, there have been various researches. In the past, mechanical cooling methods have been used to control the temperature of processors. However, up-to-date microprocessors causes severe thermal problems, resulting in increased cooling cost. Therefore, recent studies have focused on architecture-level thermal-aware design techniques than mechanical cooling methods. Even though architecture-level thermal-aware design techniques are efficient for reducing the temperature of processors, they cause performance degradation inevitably. Therefore, if the mechanical cooling methods can manage the thermal problems of processors efficiently, the performance can be improved by reducing the performance degradation due to architecture-level thermal-aware design techniques such as dynamic thermal management. In this paper, we analyze the cooling efficiency of high-performance multicore processors according to mechanical cooling methods. According to our experiments using air cooler and liquid cooler, the liquid cooler consumes more power than the air cooler whereas it reduces the temperature more efficiently. Especially, the cost for reducing $1^{\circ}C$ is varied by the environments. Therefore, if the mechanical cooling methods can be used appropriately, the temperature of high-performance processors can be managed more efficiently.

  • The high temperature superconducting (HTS) contra-rotating propulsion (CRP) systems comprise two coaxial propellers sited on behind the other and rotate in opposite directions. They have the hydrodynamic advantage of recovering the slipstream rotational energy which would otherwise be lost to a conventional single-screw system. However, the cooling systems used for HTS CRP system need a high cooling power enough to maintain a low temperature of 2G HTS material operating at liquid neon (LNe) temperature (24.5 - 27 K). In this paper, a single thermo-syphon cooling approach using a Gifford-McMahon (G-M) cryo-cooler is presented. First, an optimal thermal design of a 1.5 MW HTS motor was conducted varying to different types of commercial 2G HTS tapes. Then, a mono-cryogenic cooling system for an integration of two 1.5 MW HTS motors will be designed and analyzed. Finally, the 3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulation of thermal characteristics was also performed.

  • In this paper, we report the design, fabrication and characterization of the 3-Dimensional optical receiver for a Laser Detection And Ranging (LADAR) system. The optical receiver is composed of three parts; $16{\pm}16$ Geiger Mode InGaAs Avalanche Photodiode (APD) array device operated at 1560 nm wavelength, Read Out Integrated Circuit (ROIC) measuring the Time-Of-Flight (TOF) of the return signal reflected from target objects, a package and cooler maintaining the proper operational condition of the detector and control electronics. We can confirm that the LADAR system can detect the signal from a target up to 1.2 km away, and it showed low Dark Count Rate (DCR) of less than 140 kHz, and higher than 28%-Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE). This is considered to be the best performance of the $16{\pm}16$ FPA APD optical receiver for a LADAR system.

  • This study was conducted for engineering optimization for the gasification process which is the key factor for success of Taean IGCC gasification plant which has been driven forward under the government support in order to expand to supply new and renewable energy and diminish the burden of the responsibility for the reduction of the green house gas emission. The gasification process consists of coal milling and drying, pressurization and feeding, gasification, quenching and HP syngas cooling, slag removal system, dry flyash removal system, wet scrubbing system, and primary water treatment system. The configuration optimization is essential for the high efficiency and the cost saving. For this purpose, it was designed to have syngas cooler to recover the sensible heat as much as possible from the hot syngas produced from the gasifier which is the dry-feeding and entrained bed slagging type and also applied with the oxygen combustion and the first stage cylindrical upward gas flow. The pressure condition inside of the gasifier is around 40~45Mpg and the temperature condition is up to $1500{\sim}1700^{\circ}C$. It was designed for about 70% out of fly ash to be drained out throughout the quenching water in the bottom part of the gasifier as a type of molten slag flowing down on the membrane wall and finally become a byproduct over the slag removal system. The flyash removal system to capture solid particulates is applied with HPHT ceramic candle filter to stand up against the high pressure and temperature. When it comes to the residual tiny particles after the flyash removal system, wet scurbbing system is applied to finally clean up the solids. The washed-up syngas through the wet scrubber will keep around $130{\sim}135^{\circ}C$, 40~42Mpg and 250 ppmv of hydrochloric acid(HCl) and hydrofluoric acid(HF) at maximum and it is turned over to the gas treatment system for removing toxic gases out of the syngas to comply with the conditions requested from the gas turbine. The result of this study will be utilized to the detailed engineering, procurement and manufacturing of equipments, and construction for the Taean IGCC plant and furthermore it is the baseline technology applicable for the poly-generation such as coal gasification(SNG) and liquefaction(CTL) to reinforce national energy security and create new business models.
