This study is concerned with the estimation of daily instantaneous maximum wind velocity in the meteorological major cities (selected each 17 points) during the yearly 1973-2016. The purpose of this paper is to present the turbulence statistic characteristics (probability distribution, correlation coefficient, turbulency intensity, shear velocity, roughness length, turbulence integral length, skewness, and kurtosis) of the daily instantaneous maximum wind velocity. In the processes of analysis, used observations data obtained at Korea Meteorological Adminstration (KMA). The estimation of non-Gaussian load effects for design applications has often been treated tacitly by invoking a conventional wind design load on the basis of Gaussian processes. This assumption breaks down when the instantaneous wind velocity processes exhibits non-Gaussianity. From the analysis results, the probability distribution of the daily instantaneous maximum wind velocity shows a very closed with non-Gaussian in the ensemble population 748, the correlation coefficient shows larger at inland area more than coastal area.

Solar radiation components reflected by the sea surface ($R_{ss}\uparrow$) are additional energy sources comprising the solar radiation regime. Previous studies, based on observational approaches, indicated that $R_{ss}\uparrow$ is an available climatological resource. However, an estimation process for $R_{ss}\uparrow$ has not been established. In this case study over Jeju Island in South Korea, we applied a new estimation process to solar radiation modeling and discussed the spatial distribution of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ and its seasonal variation. Our results showed that the illuminated area and the intensity of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ became greatest at the winter solstice and least at the summer solstice. We estimated the illuminated area of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ as it expanded over the southern slope of Jeju Island. At the winter solstice, on a daily basis, the area and intensity of illumination by $R_{ss}\uparrow$ were $182.3km^2$ and $0.41\;MJ\;m^{-2}\;day\;{-1}$, respectively. Comparing the daily accumulative and instantaneous values of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ intensity, the difference was about 20 times greater in daily cases than in instantaneous cases. On the other hand, for instantaneous values, the $R_{ss}\uparrow$ intensity accounted for up to 33% of the three components, i.e., direct, diffuse and reflected radiation in winter solstice. In addition, it was estimated that the sea surface reflectance depended on the wind speed. Therefore, in a practical use of this revised model, wind conditions should be considered as a critical factor in estimating $R_{ss}\uparrow$.

Flow characteristics in transitional boundary layers on a flat plate were experimentally investigated under three different freestream conditions i. e. uniform flow with 0.1 % and 3.7% freestream turbulent intensity and cylinder-wake with 3.7% maximum turbulent intensity. Instantaneous streamwise velocities in laminar, transitional and turbulent boundary layers were measured by I-type hot-wire probe. For estimation of wall shear stresses on the flat plate, measured mean velocities near the wall were applied to the principle of Computational Preston Tube Method (CPM). Distributions of skin friction coefficients were reasonably predicted in all developed boundary layers. Intermittency profiles, which were estimated using Conditional Sampling Technique in transitional boundary layers, were also consistent with previously published data. It was predicted that the incoming turbulent intensity had more influence on transition onset point and transition process than freestream turbulent intensity existed just over the transition region. It was also confirmed that non-turbulent and turbulent profiles in transitional boundary layers could not be simply treated as Blasius and fully turbulent profiles.

A Multi-Sectional 3D-PTV algorithm was developed to reduce the calculation time of the conventional GA-3D-PTV. The hardware system of the constructed 3D-PTV system consists of two high-speed cameras ($1,024\times1,018$ pixels, 60 fps), a metal halogen lamp (400W) and a host computer. The sphere(D=30mm) is suspended in a circulating water channel $(300mm\times300mm\times1,200m)$ and Reynolds number is 1,130. About 5,000 instantaneous three-dimensional velocity vectors have been obtained by the constructed 3D-PTV system. Turbulent properties such as turbulent intensity, Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy were obtained. An eigenvalue analysis was carried out using the obtained instantaneous 3D velocity vectors to get the topological relations of the asymptotically stable critical point. Two structured shells, inner shell and outer shell, were found in the sphere wake and their motions were clarified by the measured data.
The aggregation characteristics of red blood cells (RBCs) were measured using a newly developed light-transmission slit rheometer. Conventional methods of RBC disaggregation such as the rotational Couette system were replaced with a pressure-driven slit flow system with a vibrational mechanism. Using a vibration generator, one can disaggregate the RBC aggregates stored in the slit. While shear stress decreases exponentially, instantaneous pressure and the transmitted light intensity were measured over time. Applying an abrupt shearing flow after disaggregation caused a rapid elongation of the RBCs followed by loss of elongation with the decreasing shear stress. While the shear stress is further decreasing, the RBCs start to re-aggregate and the corresponding transmitted intensity increases with time, from which the aggregation indices can be obtained using a curve-fitting program.

Animation and time-resolved analysis of the wake characteristics of 2-D bluff body flows were examinated by applying the multi-vision PIV to square cylinders(three angles of attack: $0^{circ}, 30^{circ} and 45^{\circ}$) and circular cylinders(three rotating speeds: 0rpm, 76rpm, 153rpm) submerged within a circulating water channel $(Re=10^4)$, The macroscopic shedding patterns and their dominant frequencies were discussed in terms of instantaneous velocity, vorticity and turbulent quantities such as turbulent intensity, turbulent kinetic energy and three Reynolds stresses. Particularly the time-averaged distribution of turbulent intensity 'islands' where their peak magnitudes were focused always small regions behind the bodies without noticeable spatial migration were particularly discovered in all cases. And the dominant frequencies of the turbulent quantities in the wake regions were two times larger than those of the velocity and vorticity.

The shelter effect of a porous wind fence on a triangular prism was experimentally investigated in a circulating water channel. A porous fence of porosity .epsilon.=38.5% was installed in front of the prism model. The fence and prism model were embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The instantaneous velocity fields around the fence and prism model were measured by using the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence and prism model were measured by using the 2-frame PTV(Particle Tracking Velocimetry) system. By installing the fence in front of the prism, the recirculation flow region decreases compared with that of no fence case. The porous fence also decreases the mean velocity, turbulent intensity and turbulent kinetic energy around the prism. Especially, at the top of the prism, the turbulent kinetic energy is about half of that without the fence.
The flow structure and heat transfer characteristics of a turbulent buoyant jet were investigated experimentally. The instantaneous temperature and velocity fields in the near field were measured using a two-frame PIV and PLIF techniques. A thin light sheet illuminated a two-dimensional cross section of the buoyant jet in which Rhodamine B was added as a fluorescent dye. The intensity variations of LIF signal from Rhodamine B molecules scattered by the laser light were captured by a CCD camera after passing an optical filter. By ensemble averaging the instantaneous temperature and velocity fields, the mean temperature and velocity fields as well as the spatial distributions of turbulent statistics were obtained. The results show the flow structure and convective heat transfer of the developing shear layer in the near field.

The characteristics of flow pattern transitions in a horizontal cocurrent gas-liquid flow have been investigated by means of a statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drop curves at an orifice. The dimensionless intensity of pressure drop fluctuation shows a sudden change during the course of flow transitions, indicating that it may be a good measure to identify the flow regime transitions. The probability density function of the curves feature a unique pattern depending upon the flow regimes and the statistical properties of the PDF also have particular ranges for each flow regime. In conclusion, the statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drops may be a powerful tool for predicting the flow regime transitions.

The light-transmission technique has been applied to a slit rheometer for measuring red blood cell aggregation as well as blood viscosity over a range of shear rates. For measurement of blood viscosity and aggregation, instantaneous pressure and transmit-light intensity are measured with time. Using a precision pressure measurement, one can determine the shear stress and shear rate. In addition, a transmitted light through a blood sample indicates degree of RBC aggregation. With abruptly flowing with high shear rate, RBCs rapidly disaggregate and the intensity of the transmitted light becomes low. When continuously flowing with decreasing shear rate, RBCs tend to re-aggregate and the corresponding transmit-intensity gradually increases with time. The light intensity as a degree of RBC aggregation is plotted against shear rate and compared with blood viscosity. The advantages of this design are dual measurement at a time, simplicity, i.e., ease of operation and no moving parts, low cost, short operating time, and the disposable kit which is contacted with blood sample.
