The wrinkling of thin sheet metal induced by compressive instability is one of major defects in sheet metal forming processes. compressive instability is influence by many factors such as mechanical properties of the sheet material geometry of the sheet contact conditions and plastic anisotropy. The analysis of compressive instability in a plastically deforming body is rather difficult because the effects of the above-mentioned factors are rather complex and the instability behavior may show swide variations even for small deviations of the factors. in this work the bifurcation theory is introduced for the finite elemental analysis of the instability behavior of a thin sheet with initially sound geometry and property. All the above-mentioned factors are conveniently considered by the finite element method. The instability limit is found by introducing a criterion scheme into the incremental analysis and the post-bifurcation behavior is analyzed by introducing the branching scheme. Wrinkling initiation and growth in the deep drawing process are analyzed.
Wind effects on roofs are usually considered by equivalent static wind loads based on the equivalence of displacement or internal force for structural design. However, for large-span spatial structures that are prone to dynamic instability under strong winds, such equivalent static wind loads may be inapplicable. The dynamic stability of spatial structures under unsteady wind forces is therefore studied in this paper. A new concept and its corresponding method for dynamic instability-aimed equivalent static wind loads are proposed for structural engineers. The method is applied in the dynamic stability design of an actual double-layer cylindrical reticulated shell under wind actions. An experimental-numerical method is adopted to study the dynamic stability of the shell and the dynamic instability originating from critical wind velocity. The dynamic instability-aimed equivalent static wind loads of the shell are obtained.
It has been reported that the plugged steam generator tube of Three Mile Island Unit 1 in America was damaged by growing flaw and then this steam generator tube destroyed the nearby steam generator tubes of normal state. On this account, stabilizer installation is necessary to prevent secondary damage of the steam generator tubes. The flow-induced vibration is one of the major causes of the fluid-elastic instability. To guarantee the structural integrity of steam generator tubes, the flow-induced vibration caused by the fluid-elastic instability is necessary to be suppressed. In this paper, the effective velocity and the critical velocity are calculated to evaluate the fluid-elastic instability. In addition, stability ratio value of the steam generator tubes is evaluated in order to propose one criterion when to determine stabilizer installation.
Sizing the tube inlet orifice of a Once-Through Steam Generator (OTSG) is important to protect the integrity of the tubes from thermal cycling and vibration wear. In this study, a new sizing criterion is proposed for the tube inlet orifice to suppress the parallel channel instability in an OTSG. A perturbation method is used to capture the essential parts of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena of the parallel channel instability. The perturbation model of the heat transfer regime boundaries is identified as a missing part in existing models for sizing the OTSG tube inlet orifice. Limitations and deficiency of the existing models are identified and the reasons for the limitations are explained. The newly proposed model can be utilized to size the tube inlet orifice to suppress the parallel channel instability without excessive engineering margin.

The aim of the present work was the study of instability in a loose sand from Les Dunes beach in Ain Beninan, Algeria, where the Boumerdes earthquake occurred in 2003. This earthquake caused significant structural damages and claimed the lives of many people. Damages caused to infrastructures were strongly related to phenomena of liquefaction. The study was based on the results of two drained and six undrained triaxial tests over a local sand collected in a region where liquefaction occurred. All the tests hereby analyzed followed compression stress-paths in monotonic conditions and the specimens were isotropically consolidated, since the objective was to study the instability due to static loading as part of a more general project, which also included cyclic studies. The instability was modeled with the second-order work increment criterion. The definition of the instability line for Les Dunes sand and its relation with yield surfaces allowed the identification of the region of potential instability and helped in the evaluation of the susceptibility of soils to liquefy under undrained conditions and its modeling. The dilatancy rate was studied in the points where instability began. Some mixed tests were also simulated, starting with drained conditions and then changing to undrained conditions at different time steps.
The aeroelastic stability of a long-span suspension footbridge with a bluff deck (prototype section) was examined through static and dynamic wind tunnel tests using a 1:10 scale sectional model of the main girder, and the corresponding aerodynamic countermeasures were proposed in order to improve the stability. First, dynamic tests of the prototype sectional model in vertical and torsional motions were carried out at three attack angles (α = 3°, 0°, -3°). The results show that the galloping instability of the sectional model occurs at α = 3° and 0°, an observation that has never been made before. Then, the various aerodynamic countermeasures were examined through the dynamic model tests. It was found that the openings set on the vertical web of the prototype section (web-opening section) mitigate the galloping completely for all three attack angles. Finally, static tests of both the prototype and web-opening sectional models were performed to obtain the aerodynamic coefficients, which were further used to investigate the galloping mechanism by applying the Den Hartog criterion. The total damping of the prototype and web-opening models were obtained with consideration of the structural and aerodynamic damping. The total damping of the prototype model was negative for α = 0° to 7°, with the minimum value being -1.07%, suggesting the occurrence of galloping, while that of the web-opening model was positive for all investigated attack angles of α = -12° to 12°.

Forming limit diagrams for three different galvanized deep drawing quality steel sheets have been measured by hemispherical punch stretching. The experimental forming limit diagrams have been compared with results calculated using the shear instability criterion and the M-K model which takes into account a strain gradient effect resulting from bending (curvature) of a flat sheet by punch stretching. The measured data were in good agreement with the results calculated using exponent M value of 8 in Hosford's yield criterion for the M-K model and M= 6 for the shear instability model.
The metal forming behavior and defect formation in Ti-6Al-4V tube during hot backward extrusion were investigated. Dynamic material model(DMM) including Ziegler's instability criterion was employed to predict the forming defects such as shear band, inner and/or surface cracks. This approach was coupled to the internal variables generated from FE analysis. The simulation results fur the backward extrusion were compared with the experimental observation. The chilling effect and friction indicated a great influence on the deformation mode of the tube and the formation of surface cracks. The formation of forming defects in the extruded tube was attributed to non-uniform distribution of strain, strain rate and temperatures in the extruded tubes for the given test conditions.
Hot deformation behavior of Udiment720Li was characterized by compression tests in the temperature range of 10$25^{\circ}C$ to 115$0^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $0.0005 s^{-1};to;5 s^{-1}$. The combination of dynamic material model (DMM) and Ziegler's instability criterion was applied to predict an optimum condition and unstable regions for hot forming. A dynamic recrystallization model coupled with FEM results was used to interpret the evolution of microstructures. In order to verify the reliability of the present coupled model, isothermal forging was performed in the temperature range 1050~115$0^{\circ}C$ at strain rates of $0.05 s^{-1};and;0.005 s^{-1}$. The present model was successfully applied to the hot forming process of Udimet720Li.
This paper investigates the stability of a three-dimensional (3D) wedge under the pseudo-static action of an earthquake based on the nonlinear Barton-Bandis (B-B) failure criterion. The influences of the mechanical parameters of the discontinuity surface, the geometric parameters of the wedge and the pseudo-static parameters of the earthquake on the stability of the wedge are analyzed, as well as the sensitivity of these parameters. Moreover, a stereographic projection is used to evaluate the influence of pseudo-static direction on instability mode. The parametric analyses show that the stability coefficient and the instability mode of the wedge depend on the mechanical parameter of the rock mass, the geometric form of the wedge and the pseudo-static state of the earthquake. The friction angle of the rock φb, the roughness coefficient of the structure surface JRC and the two angles related to strikes of the joints θ1 and θ2 are sensitive to stability. Furthermore, the sensitivity of wedge height h, the compressive strength of the rock at the fracture surface JCS and the slope angle α to the stability are insignificant.
