  • This study was to analyze how elementary school science textbooks explain dissolution and to examine the patterns of elementary school teachers' conceptions on dissolution and the teaching practices on dissolution of elementary school teachers. According to the result of the textbook analysis, the textbooks based on the 7th curriculum didn't explain dissolution very differently from those based on the 6th curriculum. The contents dealing with dissolution in the textbooks of 7th curriculum became difficult gradually as the year went up, but the connected organization of the contents made students learn it easily. For example, in order to learn dissolution introduced first in the 3rd year 2nd semester textbook, students would tell soluble substance in water from insoluble substance in water as they put powdered substance in water. In the 5th year 1st semester textbook students were supposed to acquire the knowledge related to dissolution through the designed activities such as comparing solubility produced by different solvents and defining a solvent, a solute, dissolution, and a solution. In addition, teachers' guide for 5th year 1st semester textbook elucidated the principle of dissolution using attraction concept that was scientific. The result of the survey on teachers showed that 90% of elementary school teachers understood the dissolution of salt in water just as millet particles' filling the space between bean particles and they responded that they demonstrated millet particles' filling the space between been particles when they taught the dissolution of salt in water. When it comes to teachers who had the right idea on dissolution as the attraction conception, understanding was one thing and teaching was another, because they often instructed dissolution as the space conception in the real teaching.

  • Up to the present, fabric finishing methods have been mainly employed for the application of chitosan. However, the coated chitosan acid salt is prone to be detached from the fabric during the laundering process. In order to improve the wash fastness, chitosan treated fabrics are being subjected to thermal curing. In this study, chemical crosslinking reaction by epichlorohydrin was introduced to improve the problem of the thermal curing. An improvement of the wash fastness is expected since the coated chitosan component on the fabric become insoluble by the introduction of the crosslinking. The demerit of the single chitosan treatment (inferior handle due to the excessive stiffness, etc.) was supplemented by the application of chitosan-polyurethane mixture solution. The mixture ratios were adjusted to 1 : 0, 1 : 0.25, 1 : 0.5, 1 : 1, and 1 : 2 for the chitosan/PU mixture. Physical and mechanical properties of the finished fabric specimens were measured using the Kawabata Evaluation System(KES), and hand values were calculated accordingly based on the translational formulas.

  • This research was compared the amount of phosphate solublized by Pantoea agglomerans which can solublize the insoluble phosphate salt hydroxyapatite with the phosphate produced by being treated with various acids. When P. agglomerans grows in the BY medium containing potassium dihydrogenphosphate of phosphate source without hydroxyapatite, it consumed 361mg/L phosphate, during 72hours cultivation. When 4% hydroxapatite was treated with 0.01N citric acid and oxalic aicd, the amount of solublized phosphate was 702mg/L and 537mg/L more than that by P.agglomerans. The maximum amount of solublized phosphate by P. agglomerans was 465mg/L after 48 hours cultivation.

  • The effects of modifiers such as methanol, water diethylamine in methanol (10 v/v %), and diethylamine in water (10 v/v %) were investigated at three different concentrations (1, 5, and 10 v/v %) of the modifiers in supercritical $CO_2$ (SC-$CO_2$) in order to enhance the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) efficiency of cephalotaxine from Cephalotaxus wilsoniana Leaves. Among the modifiers employed, methanol basified with diethylamine was found to greatly enhance the extraction efficiency relative to any other modifiers employed. The results suggest that cephalotaxine in plant matrices may be readily changed from SC-$CO_2$-insoluble salt to SC-$CO_2$-soluble free base by basified modifiers. In addition, SC-$CO_2$modified with basified methanol could enhance the extraction efficiency of cephalotaxine more than 30% when compared to the conventional organic solvent extraction.

  • The effects on pool boiling heat transfer of aqueous solutions of boric acid ($H_3BO_3$) and sodium chloride (NaCl) as working fluids have been studied. Borated and NaCl water were prepared by dissolving 0.5~5% volume concentration of boric acid and NaCl in distilled-deionized water. The pool boiling tests were conducted using $1{\times}1\;cm^2$ flat heaters at 1 atm. The critical heat flux (CHF) dramatically increased compared to boiling pure water. At the end of boiling tests it was observed that particles of boric acid and NaCl had deposited and formed a coating on the heater surface. The CHF enhancement and surface modification during boiling tests were very similar to those obtained from boiling with nanofluids. Additional experiments were carried out to investigate the reliability of the additives deposition in pure water. The boric acid and NaCl coatings disappeared after repeated boiling tests on the same surface due to the soluble nature of the coatings, thus CHF enhancement no longer existed. These results demonstrate that not only insoluble nanoparticles but also soluble salts can be deposited during boiling process and the deposited layer is solely responsible for significant CHF enhancement.

  • The recombinant human interferon alpha 2a ($rhIFN-{\alpha}2a$), expressed in Saccharomyces cerevtsiae, was purified from insoluble aggregates. The inclusion body of $rhIFN-{\alpha}$ was solubilized by guanidine salt in the presence of disulfide reducing agent. The refolding of denatured $rhIFN-{\alpha}2a$ was achieved by simple dilution. The authentic interferon alpha, which has two correctly matched disulfide bonds, was seperated from incompletely oxidized $IFN-{\alpha}$ and dimeric $IFN-{\alpha}$ by use of a CM-Sepharose column, followed by size exclusion columns at two different pH conditions. The purified protein has been subjected to detailed physicochemical characterization including sequence determination. Unlike other $rhIFN-{\alpha}2a$ from E. coli reported, the $rhIFN-{\alpha}2a$ from S. cerevisiae has no methionine residue at its N-terminus originating from the start codon, ATG. The pI of the protein was determined to be 6.05 with a single band in the pI gel, which demonstrated that the purified $rhIFN-{\alpha}$ was homogeneous. The structural study using circular dichroism showed that the protein retains its three dimensional structure in the wide range of pH conditions between pH 3 and 9, and only minor strucural deformation was observed at pH 1.0.

  • In an attempt to develop a non-aqueous liquid formulation of practically insoluble biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB), dissolution and permeation studies were performed. Various non-aqueous DDB solutions were formulated and filled into empty hard capsules. Dissolution rates of a new formulation were compared with those of commercially available DDB preparations using one and eight dose units. Dissolution rates after 2 hr of DDB tablets (DDB 25 mg), hard capsules (DDB 7.5 mg) and soft capsules (DDB 7.5 mg) on market and new formulation (DDB 7.5 mg) were 6.3, 15.0, 84.5 and 98.0%, respectively. Higher doses (8 units) resulted in a supersaturation within one hr of dissolution, and dissolved amounts were reduced markedly. Due to the saturation and precipitation, a directly proportional dose-dissolution relationship was not observed. The addition of copolyvidone and/or glycyrrhizic acid ammonium salt to DDB solution in polyethylene glycol 300 and 400 inhibited the formation of precipitates during dissolution and markedly enhanced the rabbit duodenal permeation of DDB. From the site-specific gastrointestinal permeation studies, it was found that permeation rates of DDB after mixing of non-aqueous DDB solutions with aqueous buffered solutions were faster in the order of $rectal\;<\;colonic\;{\risingdotseq}\;ileal\;{\risingdotseq}\;duodenal\;<\;jejunal\;<\;gastric$.

  • Although lovastatin (LS) is widely used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, its bioavailability is known to be around 5%. This study was aimed to increase the solubility and dissolution-permeation rates of LS using solid dispersions (SDs) with bile salts. The solubilities of LS in water, aqueous bile salt solutions and non-aqueous vehicles were determined, and effects of bile salts on the cellulose or duodenal permeation of LS from SDs were evaluated using a horizontal permeation system. SDs were prepared at various ratios of LS to carriers, such as sodium deoxycholate (SDC), sodium glycocholate (SGC) and/or 2-hydroxypropyl-$\beta$-cyclodextrin (HPCD). The addition of bile salts (25 mM) in water increased markedly the solubility of LS by the micellar solubilization. Some non-aqueous vehicles were effective in solubilizing LS. From differential scanning calorimetric studies, it was found that the crystallinity of LS in SDs disappeared, indicating a formation of amorphous state. The SDs showed markedly enhanced dissolution compared with those of their physical mixtures (PMs) and drug alone. In the dissolution-permeation studies using a cellulose membrane, the donor and receptor solutions were maintained as a sink condition using pH 7.0 phosphate buffer containing 0.05% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). The flux of LS alone was nearly same as that of LS-SDC-HPCD (1:3:6) PM. However, the flux of LS-SDC-HPCD (1:3:6) SD slightly increased compared with drug alone and PM, suggesting that entrapment of LS in micelles does not significantly hinder the permeation across cellulose membrane. In the dissolution-duodenal permeation studies using a LS-HPCD-SDC (1:3:6) SD, the addition of various bile salts in donor solutions (25 mM) enhanced the permeation of LS markedly, and the fluxes were found to be $0.69{\pm}0.41$, $0.87{\pm}0.51$, $0.84{\pm}0.46$, $0.47{\pm}0.17$ and $0.68{\pm}0.32{\mu}g/cm^2/hr$ for sodium cholate (SC), SDC, SGC, sodium taurodeoxycholate (STDC) and sodium taurocholate (STC), respectively. The stepwise increase of donor SGC concentration increased the flux dose-dependently. From the relationship of donor SGC concentration and flux, the concentration of SGC initiating the permeation across the duodenal mucosa was calculated to be 11.1 mM, which is nearly same as the critical micelle concentration (CMC, 11.6 mM) of SGC. However, with no addition of bile salts and below CMC, the permeation was very limited and irratic, indicating that LS itself is very poor permeable. Higher protions of bile salt in SD such as LS-SDC or LS-SGC (1 : 49 and 1 : 69) showed highly promoted fluxes. In conclusion, SD systems with bile salts, which may form their micelles in intestinal fluids, might be a promising means for providing enhanced dissolution and intestinal permeation of practically insoluble and non-absorbable LS.
