Korea-Japan English Camp: A Case Study of English Immersion Program in Korea

  • English immersion has emerged in Korea only recently as an innovative approach to learning and teaching English. Lack of real life experience of using English has been one of the biggest obstacles for Korean learners of English and has resulted in an increasing number of children being sent to English-speaking countries and a huge amount of dollar outflow. This recent innovation is expected to be the magic wand to resolve all these problems. However, setting up an immersion program in a typical EFL context like Korea has brought in another set of issues and challenges. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of a short-term immersion English program in Korea and provide some empirical data to develop programs that can better cater to the needs of EFL learners. A two-week English immersion program was developed and implemented with 57 Korean and Japanese students whose grade level ranged from 4 to 12. The study results show that the program was successful in terms of changing the participants' attitude toward learning English, improving their English skills, enhancing intercultural understanding and competence, and motivating them for further studies of English and other foreign languages and cultures.

일개 간호대학에서 4년간 실시한 임상수행력평가 (Clinical Performance Examination for Nursing Students: 2006-2009)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to share the experience of clinical performance examinations (CPXs) using standardized patients, which was to test comprehensive clinical competence of fourth-year nursing students for four years. Methods: The assessment strategies for CPXs were developed. It included clinical scenarios, the roles of standardized patients, and appraisal criteria in the areas of fundamental and comprehensive nursing care. The CPXs were implemented to about 60-70 fourth-year nursing students of C University in G-city, South Korea, during every second semester from the year of 2006 to 2009. Results: The effects of CPXs were measured by 10 or 25-item rating checklist. Internal reliability of the checklists was distributed from .511 to .956 and interrater agreement between faculties and standardized patients was moderate (r=.250-.949). Students' satisfaction level was 4.27 out of 5 points for four years. Conclusion: The use of CPXs was an innovative educational strategy to evaluate nursing students' comprehensive performance ability including knowledge, skills and attitude. Further studies are needed to evaluate the levels of critical thinking and problem solving skills of clinical nurses who were taken CPXs as well as employers' satisfaction.

SW일자리 창출을 위한 지속가능성과 개방형 관점에서의 산업클러스터 사례 비교 분석 (A Comparative Study on the Industrial Cluster Cases for Job Creation from the Viewpoint of Sustainability and Open Innovation)

  • Currently, the SW industry is the center of digital economy and it is very important industry in terms of market scale and ripple effect. Due to the suffering from poor working environment of the SW industry and the disproportion of manpower supply due to the lack of experienced SW manpower, it is hard to create jobs of high quality for the SW professionals who can be applied to various convergence industries. In this study, we try to analyze the benchmarking cases of successful foreign industrial innovative clusters in order to promote sustainable development direction of SW industry and to create high quality SW jobs. First, the comparison criteria are derived from the viewpoint of creation of high quality SW jobs through an analysis of SW environment by using expert FGI (Focus Group Interview) technique. The critical success factors (CSFs) are derived by comparing and analyzing each industrial cluster cases in terms of SW job creation. This article presents the desirable implications of the cluster of SW industry that can generate SW jobs continuously from the viewpoint of ecosystem environment infrastructure. Through this study, we propose a meaningful direction of SW clusters for job creation, and solve the business inconsistency and suggest ways to increase the sustainability of core competence manpower.

e-비즈니스 발전단계에 따른 경쟁전략과 e-비즈니스 성과와의 관련성 분석 (An Empirical Study on the Relationship between Competitive Strategy and e-Business Performance by e-Business Development Stages)

  • Selecting and implementing competitive strategies based on e-business is extremely important since it determines if an enterprise can continue to grow or not. Accordingly, systematic and empirical study on the implementation of e-business based on competitive strategy is required, and in-depth studies considering various e-business development stages of enterprises are also needed. The purpose of this study is to present guideline for the staff in charge and managers of enterprises to achieve competitive advantage and to increase organizational performance in e-business environments. What we have found are as follows. (1) Factors greatly influencing on competitive strategy selection through e-business were environmental uncertainty, centralization, innovative culture, technological competence, and formalization. (2) Results of the relationship between competitive strategies and e-business performance showed that each strategy had different effects on financial performance, process performance, and customer performance. and (3) Data analysis between internal and external environmental factors and competitive strategy by each e-business development stage proved that the relationships between competitive strategy and e-business performance were different based on e-business development stage. Implications of the study and guidelines for the managers are provided in the paper.

Critical Success Factors of Large Design-Build Projects in Vietnam

  • Design-build (D&B) has been broadly perceived as an effective project delivery method and become popular in the world. However, the implementation process of this innovative procurement method in Vietnam encounters difficulties due mainly to unfamiliarity and inexperience with the approach. Critical success factors (CSFs) which could be used to enhance the project execution are useful to practitioners in Vietnam if identified. A questionnaire survey was employed to identify CSFs of D&B projects in Vietnam. Parties' competence, especially financial capability, and contract documentation are the most important factors significantly affecting project success. It was also shown that the perspectives of two principal parties in D&B projects on the CSFs are statistically correlated. The identified CSFs were then validated with some various D&B projects. The execution results of CSFs' were compared with the projects' performance measured try key performance indicators (KPIs). The most important success factors of this study were also compared with other countries'. The validation and comparison results provide project participants with some useful information to perform D&B projects better. Practitioners should well perform the identified CSFs to enhance the chance of the success of D&B projects in Vietnam. The findings of this study are useful not only to Vietnamese practitioners but also to others who are concerned about D&B method and plan to employ it in Vietnam in future.

벤처기업의 지속성장을 유지할 수 있는 성공 메커니즘분석 -역동적 기업역량 시각에서- (Establishing Major Successful Factors of Venture Firm from the Perspective of Dynamic Firm Capability: The Case of IDIS and KODICOM)

  • This article analyzes the venture firm based upon the new framework of Dynamic Firm Capability (DFC) to identify the process mechanism. Research methodology includes the case study involving structured interview and data collection from two leading Korean ICT(Information Communication Technology) firms in the same sector (DVR). IDIS, spun off from the university, has accumulated the innovative capability based on the R&D department. On the other hand, KODICOM has retained the technological trajectory in terms of marketing competence. Underlying hypothesis is that a firm should show a idiosyncratic evolutionary pattern by acquiring different complimentary assets(CA). In addition, effective internal process should be matched with the essential characteristics not only at the firm level but also at the sectoral level. By analyzing those two different firms, we will find the strategic successful factors based upon the evolutionary point of view. It is a key contribution of this paper to study on the process mechanism of ventures, and to explain detailed process mechanism by viewing two different characteristics of the firm at the functional level.

  • The article discusses theoretical and methodological issues of modern pedagogical technologies: the essence, structure, functions, principles, conditions for successful functioning in educational process of the university. The article reflects the results of the analysis of publications on the following grounds: 1) levels of presentation of scientific information (theoretical, theoretical and experimental, empirical); 2) signs and properties of educational technologies; 3) approaches to the choice of grounds for classifications of educational technologies; 4) the possibilities of educational technologies in the formation of the academic, communicative and professional competence of a specialist; 5) criteria for assessing the effectiveness of their application in university educational practice; 6) the readiness of university teachers to develop and implement educational technologies.

예비창업자의 자기결정성이 기업가정신과 창업의지에 미치는 영향: 창업교육의 조절효과를 중심으로 (Relationship Among Self-Determination, Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurial Intention of University Students in Korea)

  • 위험을 감수하며 혁신적으로 도전하여 커다란 성과를 이루어내는 기업가정신의 부족으로 대학생들이 창업보다는 공무원 및 공공기관 등 상대적으로 안정된 취업에 몰입하고 있는 것이 현실이다. 본 연구는 예비창업자들이 자기결정성과 기업가정신의 고취를 통해서 취업과 더불어 창업으로의 진로를 제언하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 예비창업자인 대학생의 자기결정성, 기업가정신 및 창업의지 간의 관계를 규명하였으며, 창업교육의 조절효과를 검증하였다. 실증분석 결과 첫째, 예비창업자의 높은 자기결정성(자율성, 유능감)은 창업의지에 긍정적인 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 예비창업자의 높은 자기결정성(자율성, 유능감)은 기업가정신에도 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 예비창업자의 기업가정신은 창업의지에 긍정적인 영향을 주었다. 넷째, 기업가정신은 자기결정성(자율성, 유능감)과 창업의지의 관계에서 완전매개역할을 수행하였다. 마지막으로, 자기결정성(유능감)과 창업의지의 긍정적인 관계는 창업교육을 수강한 집단이 그렇지 않은 집단에 비해, 더욱 높게 나타냈다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 예비창업자인 대학생의 창업의지를 향상시키기 위해서는 대학교육 현장에서 대학생들의 자기결정성을 통한 내재적 동기부여 강화가 필요하다. 이때 창업의지의 고취는 예비창업가의 자기결정성을 향상시키는 노력과 동시에 창업교육을 통한 기업가 정신의 향상을 위한 노력이 병행되어야 한다. 이를 위해서 예비창업자의 개인심리적 특성 함양을 위한 창업교육, 내재적 동기부여 강화를 위한 자기주도적 성인교육기법의 적용, 창업교육전문가의 육성을 통한 창업교육의 전문화, 직업교육 또는 진로교육으로서의 창업의 일상화 및 지원제도가 대학교육에서도 마련되어야 할 것이다.

벤처기업의 보유역량과 경쟁전략이 경영성과에 미치는 영향 (Organizational capability, competitive strategy and firm performance in venture businesses)

  • 자원이 부족한 벤처기업이 풍부한 자원을 가진 대기업과의 경쟁에서 승리하기 위해서는 자원의 효과적 사용이 중요하게 작용한다. 자원을 효과적으로 사용하기 위해서는 자원투입의 방향성과 일관성이 확보되어야 하므로 결과적으로 자원상의 강점과 기업이 추구하는 전략 간에 적합성이 요구된다. 이에 따라 본 논문은 기업이 어떤 자원상의 강점을 가졌는지에 따라 전략이 결정되며, 설정된 전략에 의해 자원투입의 방향이 정해짐으로써 효과적인 자원투입이 이루어져 성과향상으로 이어진다는 논리에 입각하여 가설을 제시하고 실증분석을 통해 검증하였다. 실증분석 결과에 따르면, 연구개발능력은 기술 혁신차별화전략에, 마케팅능력은 마케팅차별화전략에, 재무능력과 생산능력은 저원가전략에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나, 자원에 따라 유효한 전략이 달라짐을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 연구개발능력과 마케팅능력은 저원가전략에, 생산 능력은 기술차별화전략에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 자원상의 강점에 따라 어느 한 전략을 배타적으로 선택하는 것이 성과향상을 가져올 수 있음을 의미한다. 본 논문은 벤처기업에 있어 자원과 전략 간의 적합성이 성과에 중요한 영향을 미침을 실증적으로 입증했다는 점에서의 의의를 가진다.

독일 루르지역의 지역혁신정책 거버넌스 연구: 혁신주체간 협력관계를 중심으로 (Governance of Regional Innovation Policies of the Ruhr Area in Germany)

  • 1980년대 중반부터 유럽을 중심으로 지역혁신체제란 개념이 지역정책에 도입되기 시작하여 1990년대 중반 이후부터는 그 체제가 세계적으로 확산되고 있다. 우리나라의 경우에도 교육인적자원부, 산업자원부, 과학기술부, 정보통신부 등 정부부처들은 2003년부터 각종 정책의 수립과정에 지역혁신체제를 적극적으로 도입하고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 1970년대부터 산업구조 조정의 압력을 받으면서 지역혁신정책을 추진해 온 독일 루르지역을 대상으로 지역혁신정책상의 거버넌스 구조를 분석하고자 한다. 이를 위해 지역혁신체제론에 입각한 분석 틀에 기초하여 루르지역의 지역정책과 거버넌스 구조를 조사 연구하였다. 이러한 연구결과에 의하면 루르지역은 탈 산업화로 인해 발생하는 고질적인 문제를 해결하기 위해 정부와 기업, 민간단체 등의 혁신주체들이 상호 협력적으로 지역혁신정책을 추진하고 있는 것으로 파악된다. 비록 정부형태는 다층적인 구조를 갖고 있지만 계층별로 역할이 구분되어 있는 가운데, 종적(정부간), 횡적(지역간) 협력이 비교적 잘 이루어지고 있는 것으로 판단된다.
