  • In order to attain enhanced seismic performance of RC bridges, premature shear failure prior to the achievement of target ductilities of the piers should be prevented. For this purpose, a reliable shear strength evaluation is required. The shear strength of an RC column subjected to a lateral force decreases with an increase in ductility. Many empirical equations for the shear strength have been proposed by many researchers. However, there are many discrepancies in the initial shear strength in the low ductility range, and in the decrease rate according to the ductility. In this study, a new empirical equation of shear strength considering the displacement ductility effect has been proposed, in which the initial shear strength equation proposed by the authors was revised on the basis of the investigation of many other researchers' test results. The resulting improvement in accuracy is confirmed by comparison with other empirical equations.

  • The aims of this study were first to determine the influence of vibration displacement amplitude $(200{\mu}m, 300{\mu}m peak-to-peak)$ at selected frequencies (40-200Hz) on a commonly observed but often undesired motor response elicited bylocal vibratory stimulation, the Tonic Vibration Reflex (TVR). Second, to determine the degree of synchronization of motor unit (MU) activity with vibratory stimuli. Vibration was applied to the distal tendons of the hand flexor muscles. Changes in root- mean-square electromyographic (EMG) activity of the finger and wrist flexor muscles were analyzed both as a function of their initial contraction level (0%, 10%, 20% of the maximal voluntarycontraction: MVC) and as a function of the vibration parameters. The results indicate that the TVR increased with the initial muscle contraction up to 10% MVC: The TVR increased with vibration frequency up to 100-150 Hz and decreases beyond; A significant increase of the TVR with vibration displacement amplitude was observed only for the wrist flexor muscle; MU synchronization at vibration frequency (VF) was found more often in the low frequency range $(f{\leq}100 Hz)$ and tended todecrease beyond; In the high frequency range $(f{\geq}120 Hz)$, MU activity at subharmonic frequency was predominant; The "cut-off" frequency of the synchronization with VF was neither affected by the vibration displacement amplitude nor initial muscle contraction level. The surface EMG turned out to be a useful means to analyze MU synchronization since it is noninvasive, and it can be easily used for analysis of different muscle contraction levels, while single MU technique might have some difficulties at high muscle contraction levels. Furthermore, these results indicate that high frequencyvibration (f>150 Hz) tends to induce less muscle/tendon stress and MU synchronization. Such remarks are of importance for the design of hand-held vibrating tools.ing tools.

  • Deformation behaviour of rock mass around an opening measured during tunnel excavation is very important in order to assess the stability of the tunnel. Unfortunately displacement measured only after the installation of displacement measuring device can be acquired, which results in inevitably excluding the pre-displacement occurred and accumulated before the displacement measuring devices are installed. So it is very important to consider the pre-displacement based on the elapsed time before zero reading after deformation behaviour started. In this study, the accuracy of total estimated displacement depending on the distance between face and measurement position is calculated by statistical non-linear fitting on measurable displacement data. Besides, the influence of the unavoidable measurement error is considered by using Monte-Carlo simulation. As a result, the faster the initial reading started and the smaller the measurement error is, the higher the accuracy of estimating total displacement is obtained.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to investigate a more accurate behavior analysis of tapered column with initial imperfection. The nonlinear differential equations governing the deflected shapes of the tapered column with initial imperfection are derived by large deflection theory and solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta method and Regula-Falsi method. Three kinds of cross-sectional shape with simply supported end constraint are considered in numerical examples. The load versus displacement curves including the left and right end rotations are presented in figures. The effect of cross-sectional shapes on deflected shape is analyzed, and the deflected shapes of column for several initial imperfections are shown in figure.

  • To investigate the effects of residual displacement, the structural responses of buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBF) and special moment-resisting frames (SMRF) were evaluated for design-based excitations following an application of initial residual drift. The initial residual drift was applied to the structure in two ways. The first way was to simply apply the same earthquake record to the structure twice, with an appropriate pause between applications to allow the structural response from the first record to return to zero. The second way to apply the initial residual drift was to apply a pushover to the structure until it arrives at the desired residual drift value. According to the analysis results, the initial residual drifts had a significant effect on the responses of steel BRBF and SMRF. The responses of BRBF were more highly dependent on the initial residual deformation than the responses of SMRF. Therefore, in order to minimize the post-event repair cost, a reduction of residual drift is required.

  • This study establishes a numerical analysis model of the finite element overhung rotor supported by a DTRB and describes the stiffness properties of the DTRB. The vibration characteristics and contact pressure of the RBR system are predicted according to the DTRB support characteristics such as the initial axial compression and roller profile. The stiffness of the DTRB significantly varies depending on the initial axial compression and external load owing to the occurrence of rollers under the no-load condition and increase in the Hertz contact force. The increase in the initial axial compression increases the rigidity of the DTRB, thereby reducing the displacement of the RBR system and simultaneously increasing the natural frequency. However, above a certain initial axial compression, the effect becomes insignificant, and an excessive increase in the initial axial compression increases the contact pressure. The roller crowning radius, which gives a curvature in the longitudinal direction of the roller, decreases the displacement of the RBR system and increases the natural frequency as the value increases. However, an increase in the crowning radius increases the edge stress, causing a negative effect in terms of the contact pressure. These results show that the DTRB support characteristics required for reducing the vibration and contact pressure of the RBR system supported by the DTRB can be designed.

  • This paper presents the resizing method of columns and beams that considers column-to-beam strength ratios to simultaneously control the initial stiffness and ductility of steel moment frames. The proposed method minimizes the top-floor displacement of a structure while satisfying the constraint conditions with respect to the total structural weight and column-to-beam strength ratios. The design variable considered in this method is the sectional area of structural members, and the sequential quadratic programming(SQP) technique is used to obtain optimal results from the problem formulation. The unit load method is applied to determine the displacement participation factor of each member for the top floor lateral displacement; based on this, the sectional area of each member undergoes a resizing process to minimize the top-floor lateral displacement. Resizing members by using the displacement participation factor of each member leads to increasing the initial stiffness of the structure. Additionally, the proposed method enables the ductility control of a structure by adjusting the column-to-beam strength ratio. The applicability of the proposed optimal drift design method is validated by applying it to the steel moment frame example. As a result, it is confirmed that the initial stiffness and ductility could be controlled by the proposed method without the repetitive structural analysis and the increment of structural weights.

  • The tension load of the ground anchor inserted in the ground gradually changes over time. In this regard the change of the initial tension load is primarily decreased by the fixation condition of the fixing head and the mechanical characteristics of the tensile material. The subsequent additional tension load is a time-dependent loss mostly due to the fixing conditions of the bonded length and the surrounding ground properties of the field. In this paper, therefore, a measurement system using a relative displacement detector that can relatively easily measure the change of tension load is discussed. As a result of the review, it was confirmed that the results using the relative displacement detector are similar to those of the real scale model test, and it was also confirmed that similar results were obtained with the result of the pull-out test conducted on the ground anchors fixed to weathered rocks condition. In addition, a pull-out test was conducted on the test anchors whose initial tension load loss was relatively large and through this test pull-out behavior of the tension type ground anchors was verified.

  • Voice coil actuator is used linear motion system that requires precision positioning control. In order to control precision positioning of voice coil actuator, relation model between duty ratio and moving displacement of voice coil actuator is needed. This paper present a duty ratio - displacement model in PWM control of voice coil actuator. Transfer function of voice coil actuator is obtained by combining voice coil motor's equation of motion with the equation of circuit and characteristic of voice coil motor. Consider to initial condition of velocity and current, transfer function is transformed mathematical model. The induced model can predict output displacement, velocity and current according to duty ratio and amplitude. The model is verified by experimental tests such as velocity and displacement response of voice coil motor. Simulated results have tracking errors of less than 10 percent of experimental results.
