  • This study deals with the measurement of reflectivity as well as the distance accuracy with Terrestrial Laser Scanner(TLS) using time of flight methods and near infrared wave length, for a variety of user-made targets. Especially, point clouds' reflection to several targets was measured with Gretag Macbeth il spectrophotometer in the office. And the distance accuracy in comparison to reference distance for TLS performance evaluation, was tested after scanning the user-made targets and measuring the inter-pillars distances over the precise EDM calibration baseline. The results of test was shown that except white resin objects, with approx. 10m and 170m inter-pillar distances, other targets achieved the distance accuracy of several millimeters(mm) with respect to standard distances. Future work should be concentrate on a few parameters influencing on the distance accuracy such as atmospheric correction, instrument correction, the additive constant or zero/index correction, etc.

  • Hollow silica spheres were prepared by spray drying of precursor solution of colloidal silica. The precursor solution is composed of 10-20 nm colloidal silica dispersed in a water or ethanol-water mixture solvent with additives of tris hydroxymethyl aminomethane. The effect of pH and concentrations of the precursor and additives on the formation of hollow sphere particles was studied. The spray drying process parameters of the precursor feeding rate, inlet temperature, and gas flow rate are controlled to produce the hollow spherical silica. The mixed solvent of ethanol and water was preferred because it improved the hollowness of the spheres better than plain water did. It was possible to obtain hollow silica from high concentration of 14.3 wt% silica precursor with pH 3. The thermal conductivity and total solar reflectivity of the hollow silica sample was measured and compared with those values of other commercial insulating fillers of glass beads and $TiO_2$ for applications of insulating paint, in which the glass beads are representative of the low thermal conductive fillers and the $TiO_2$ is representative of infrared reflective fillers. The thermal conductivity of hollow silica was comparable to that of the glass beads and the total solar reflectivity was higher than that of $TiO_2$.

  • At present, crystalline solar cells take up a significant percentage of the solar industry. The ways of increasing the efficiency of crystalline solar cell are texturing and AR(Anti-Reflection) coating, and the purpose of these technologies is to increase the amount of available light on the solar cell by reducing the reflectivity. The reflectance of crystalline silicon solar cell combined with such technologies will be able to predict using the proposed simulation in this paper. The simulation algorithm was made using MATLAB, and it is a combination of the theories of reflection in textured wafer and in anti-reflection coated wafer. The simulation results were divided into three wavelength band and were compared with actual reflectance measured by a spectrometer. The wavelength band from 300 to 380 was named ultraviolet region and the wavelength band from 380 to 780 is named visible region. Finally, the wavelength band from 780 to 1200 named infrared region. When compared with measured reflection data, the simulation results had a small error from 0.4 to 0.5[%] in visible region. The error occurred in the rest two regions is larger than visible region. The extreme error occurred the infrared region is due to internal reflection effect, but in the ultraviolet region, the rationale on reduction phenomenon of reflectance occurred in small range did not proved. If these problem will be solve, this simulation will have high reliability more than now and be able to predict the reflectance of solar cells.

  • Air pollution and artificial heat of urban areas have caused the urban heat island in which asphalt pavements absorb solar heat during the daytime and release the heat at night. Hence, in order to improve the environment of urban areas, it is necessary to examine cooling pavements that can reduce heat on road pavements in urban areas. The application of temperature insulation paints on road pavements require to reduce black brightness for visibility, to increase the reflection rate of infrared light and minimize the reflection rate of visible light. In the study, one part of Acrylic-emulsion was used as a main binder, and the changes in black brightness and the changes of addition ratio (0%, 15%, 30%) of hollow ceramics, as well as kinds of paints (carbon black pigment, mixed mineral pigment) were selected as the main experimental factors. The performance of temperature reduction of cooling pavements was analyzed through the reflection rate of spectrum, the reflection rate of solar heat, and the lamp test. Abrasion resistance, UV accelerated weather resistance, and sliding resistance were tested in real situations. In addition, the performance of heat reduction of testing pavements covered with high-reflection paints was analyzed by using an infrared camera. As the test results, when using mixed mineral paints and hollow ceramic of 30%, the reflection rate of spectrum was 43% in the area of near-infrared ray and 17% in the area of visible light at black brightness of $L^*$=42.89 and the reflection rate of solar heat was 27.5%. Total color difference was ${\Delta}E$=0.27 in the test of UV Accelerated Weather Resistance, indicating almost no changes in color. BPN was more than 53 when scattering #2 and #4 silica sand of more than $0.12kg/m^2$. In Taber's abrasion resistance test, abrasion loss was up to 86.4mg at 500 rotations. The performance of heat reduction was evaluated using an infrared camera at the test section applying high-reflection paints to asphalt pavements, in which the results showed that the temperature was reduced by $12.7^{\circ}C$ on CI-30-40 cooling pavements ($L^*$=38.76) and by $14.2^{\circ}C$ on CI-30-60 cooling pavements ($L^*$=57.12).

  • Increasing of the demand for energy savings for buildings, thermal barrier films have more attracted. In particular, as heat loss through the windows have been pointed out to major problems in the construction and automobile industries, the research is consistently conducted for improving the thermal blocking performance for windows. The main theory of the technology is reflect the infrared rays to help the cut off the inflow of the solar energy in summer and outflow of the heat from indoors in winter to save the energy on cooling and heating. Furthermore, this is well known for prevent glare, reduces fading caused by harmful ultraviolet radiation and easy to apply on constructed buildings if it made as a film. In addition to these advantages, apply the transparent electrode to eliminate condensation by heating. Generally ITO is used as a transparent electrode, but is has a low stability in environmental factors. In this study, ITO and its alternative, ATO, is deposited by sputtering system and then the characteristic is evaluated each material based thermal barrier thin film. The optical property was measured on wide range of wavelength (200 nm 2500 nm) to know the transparency in visible wavelength and reflectivity in IR wavelength range. The electrical property was judged by sheet resistivity. Finally the changes of the temperature and current of the deposited film was observed while applying a DC power.

  • The study was performed to recognize the most preferable spectral chennels for discriminating geological materials using the portable radiometer. The portable radiometer covers the visible and short infrared regions from approximately 0.4 to 2.5 microns which are coincided with Landsat TM, and the rock samples used for the study are pyrophylites, andesites, granite, granodiorite and silicified sedimentary rocks which are collected in Yangsan-Dongrae fault area. The analysis of the rock sample provides a preliminary basis for determining the wavelength regions showing diagnostic spectral features and for discriminating hydrothermal altered rocks from the unaltered rocks. The measurement of spectral of spectral reflectance for the rock samples was carried out in the laboratory which environment condition such as temperature, light sources, and humidity are constant. The analysis of the measured data was based on correlation between the reflectance value of the rock samples, and the follow discriptions are output of the study. 1) Pyrophyllite shows absorption at 0.83 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to the oxidation of pyrite, and absorption at 2.22 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to OH. 2) The altered rocks have generally higher reflectance than the unaltered rocks. 3) The ratio mesurement of pyrophyllites shows strong absorption at band 5/6 and band 6/4(in Landsat TM 5/7, 7/4). The ratio 1/5(Landsat TM 1/5) may be useful to discriminate andesite from the granite.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the quantitative precipitation estimation method based on satellite brightness temperature. The non-linear equation for rainfall estimation is improved by analysing precipitation cases around the Korean peninsula in summer. Radar reflectivity is adopted the CAPPI 1.5 and CMAX composite fields that provided by the Korea Meteorological Agency (KMA). In addition, the satellite data are used infrared, water vapor and visible channel measured from meteorological imager sensor mounted on the Chollian satellite. The improved algorithm is compared with the results of the A-E method and CRR analytic function. POD, FAR and CSI are 0.67, 0.76 and 0.21, respectively. The MAE and RMSE are 2.49 and 6.18 mm/h. As the quantitative error was reduced in comparison to A-E and qualitative accuracy increased in compare with CRR, the disadvantage of both algorithms are complemented. The method of estimating precipitation through a relational expression can be used for short-term forecasting because of allowing precipitation estimation in a short time without going through complicated algorithms.

  • This study has investigated the suitable wavelength for detecting biomass burning aerosols. We have performed the analysis of the wavelength at 380nm in near-UV, 400nm, 412nm, 460nm, and 490nm in visible, and 2100nm in shortwave infrared regions from the Global Imager measurements. It is well known that the UV bands have the advantage of the aerosols retrieval due to the low surface reflectance and a weak effect of Bidirectional Reflectivity Distribution Function. However, the pure surface reflectances of shortwave visible bands, except 412nm, are as low as that of 380nm in near-UV over northeast Asia. In order to detect the aerosol signal, we have retrieved the aerosol reflectance as a function of wavelength based on the surface reflectivity contrast method for the period of May 2003. It is interesting that the retrieved aerosol reflectance with 460nm is slightly more sensitive than that with 380nm. Additionally, we have applied the TOMS aerosol index method to determine the best pair for biomass burning aerosols and found that the pair of 380 and 460nm results in the best signal for retrieving aerosols.

  • Precipitation is one of the main factors that affect water and energy cycles, and its estimation plays a very important role in securing water resources and timely responding to water disasters. Satellite-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) has the advantage of covering large areas at high spatiotemporal resolution. In this study, machine learning-based rainfall intensity models were developed using Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) water vapor channel (6.7 ㎛), infrared channel (10.8 ㎛), and weather radar Column Max (CMAX) composite data based on random forest (RF). The target variables were weather radar reflectivity (dBZ) and rainfall intensity (mm/hr) converted by the Z-R relationship. The results showed that the model which learned CMAX reflectivity produced the Critical Success Index (CSI) of 0.34 and the Mean-Absolute-Error (MAE) of 4.82 mm/hr. When compared to the GeoKompsat-2 and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN)-Cloud Classification System (CCS) rainfall intensity products, the accuracies improved by 21.73% and 10.81% for CSI, and 31.33% and 23.49% for MAE, respectively. The spatial distribution of the estimated rainfall intensity was much more similar to the radar data than the existing products.

  • The aerosol optical thickness data retrieved by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) of Terra & Aqua and Meteorological Imager (MI) of Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) are analyzed and compared with the measurement data of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) in Northeast Asia. As the result, the aerosol optical thickness retrieved by MODIS and MI were well agreed at ocean region but quite different at cloud edge and barren surface. The reason was that MODIS aerosol optical thickness was retrieved using the visible and infrared channels but MI was retrieved with the visible channel only. Consequentially, the thin cloud be misinterpreted as aerosol by MI and the difference between MODIS and MI aerosol optical thicknesses could be occurred with Normal Distribution Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land surface property. Therefore, the accuracies of clear/cloud region and surface reflectivity are required in order to improve the aerosol optical thickness algorithm by MI.
