  • Objective: The objective is to identify genomic regions and candidate genes associated with age to 105 kg (AGE), average daily gain (ADG), backfat thickness (BF), and eye muscle area (EMA) in Yorkshire pig. Methods: This study used a total of 104,380 records and 11,854 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data obtained from Illumina porcine 60K chip. The estimated genomic breeding values (GEBVs) and SNP effects were estimated by single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP). Results: The heritabilities of AGE, ADG, BF, and EMA were 0.50, 0.49, 0.49, and 0.23, respectively. We identified significant SNP markers surpassing the Bonferroni correction threshold (1.68×10-6), with a total of 9 markers associated with both AGE and ADG, and 4 markers associated with BF and EMA. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses revealed notable chromosomal regions linked to AGE and ADG on Sus scrofa chromosome (SSC) 1, 6, 8, and 16; BF on SSC 2, 5, and 8; and EMA on SSC 1. Additionally, we observed strong linkage disequilibrium on SSC 1. Finally, we performed enrichment analyses using gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG), which revealed significant enrichments in eight biological processes, one cellular component, one molecular function, and one KEGG pathway. Conclusion: The identified SNP markers for productive traits are expected to provide valuable information for genetic improvement as an understanding of their expression.

  • Energy security is a topic of high importance to many countries throughout the world. Countries with access to vast energy supplies enjoy all of the economic and political benefits that come with controlling a highly sought after commodity. Given the desire to diversify away from fossil fuels due to rising environmental and economic concerns, there are limited technology options available for baseload electricity generation. Further complicating this issue is the desire for energy sources to be sustainable and globally scalable in addition to being economic and environmentally benign. Nuclear energy in its current form meets many but not all of these attributes. In order to address these limitations, TerraPower, LLC has developed the Traveling Wave Reactor (TWR) which is a near-term deployable and truly sustainable energy solution that is globally scalable for the indefinite future. The fast neutron spectrum allows up to a ~30-fold gain in fuel utilization efficiency when compared to conventional light water reactors utilizing enriched fuel. When compared to other fast reactors, TWRs represent the lowest cost alternative to enjoy the energy security benefits of an advanced nuclear fuel cycle without the associated proliferation concerns of chemical reprocessing. On a country level, this represents a significant savings in the energy generation infrastructure for several reasons 1) no reprocessing plants need to be built, 2) a reduced number of enrichment plants need to be built, 3) reduced waste production results in a lower repository capacity requirement and reduced waste transportation costs and 4) less uranium ore needs to be mined or purchased since natural or depleted uranium can be used directly as fuel. With advanced technological development and added cost, TWRs are also capable of reusing both their own used fuel and used fuel from LWRs, thereby eliminating the need for enrichment in the longer term and reducing the overall societal waste burden. This paper describes the origins and current status of the TWR development program at TerraPower, LLC. Some of the areas covered include the key TWR design challenges and brief descriptions of TWR-Prototype (TWR-P) reactor. Selected information on the TWR-P core designs are also provided in the areas of neutronic, thermal hydraulic and fuel performance. The TWR-P plant design is also described in such areas as; system design descriptions, mechanical design, and safety performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the content and design of the seven math camp programs for students of the education centers for the elementary gifted students. The analysis focused on the goals, content, and evaluations utilized in the math camp programs. The results of the study were as follows. First, there was no big difference between the goals set for each camp, and they mainly focused on the goals in affective domain. Second, the content of math camp programs was focused on enrichment rather than acceleration. Most of the programs were focused on geometry, whereas fewer programs were focused on measurement, probability and statistics. Based on the Analysis, we found that only nine out of 27 programs applied level-wised or individual exercise programs. Third, all centers for the mathematically gifted carried out evaluations of their math camp programs. However, a specific evaluation plan was not established for the math camp program plans. We suggested the direction of math camp programs as follows. First, the goals should reflect on the intended outcomes of the math camp programs. Also, the goals of math camp programs need to be distinctive from general education goals. Second, the programs should contain harmonious contents with enrichment and acceleration and must include various reactions and task commitment. The math camp programs need to include references and an appropriate information for the gifted students to encourage self-directed learning. Third, a more specific evaluation plan for math camp programs needs to be developed for effective education for the gifted students.

  • Chemical weathering of forest soils can reduce atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration over geologic time scales, providing many essential elements for life. Although many studies have been conducted on the effects of elevated atmospheric $CO_2$ on forest carbon storage using open top chambers and FACE (Free air $CO_2$ enrichment) facilities since the 1990s, studies on chemical weathering of forest soils under elevated $CO_2$ are relatively rare. Here I review on how elevated atmospheric $CO_2$ can affect the chemical weathering of forest soils and suggest directions on future research. Despite the recent advances in chemical weathering of forest soils under elevated atmospheric $CO_2$, it is still not clear how the large volume of forest soils would react under the condition. Future studies on weathering of forest soils covering large areas from the tropics to the polar regions with carefully monitored pre-treatment data would provide key information on how soils, the Earth's life sustaining engine, change under climate change.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the status and gifted students' perception on curriculum implementation for gifted education at Busan Science Academy. For the purpose, we investigated the curriculum documents, the process of implementing curriculum and the result of the questionnaire. The questionnaire about the curriculum courses, teaching strategies and evaluation method was answered by 143 students at Busan Science Academy. The curriculum courses are composed of general courses and specialized courses: general courses comprise of Korean language, social studies, foreign languages, arts, and physical education. Specialized courses consist of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, information science. Elective courses are divided into basic elective courses and in-depth courses. Each in-depth course deals with more specialized content. The significant results of the questionnaire are as follows: First, according to gifted students' perception, the credits of specialized courses and in-depth elective courses need to be increased and the credits of general courses need to be reduced. Second, teachers at this school mainly use teaching strategies such as lecture, group activities and discussion, but the students prefer diverse teaching strategies such as lecture, discussion, experiment, individual research, problem solving and field studies. Third, students prefer a paper-and-pencil testing assesment rather than a written report assesment and lab experiment assesment. According to this study, the characteristics of the acceleration curriculum at Busan Science Academy were too intensive. Thus it is difficult to implement the enrichment education according to the demand of gifted students in this school. Therefore, this study suggests that we need to revise the curriculum courses of Busan Science Academy and develop contents and strategies for gifted education in science and mathematics.

  • Relation extraction plays a role in for the process of transforming a sentence into a form of knowledge base. In this paper, we focus on predicates in a sentence and aim to identify the relevant knowledge base properties required to elucidate the relationship between entities, which enables a computer to understand the meaning of a sentence more clearly. Distant Supervision is a well-known approach for relation extraction, and it performs lexicalization tasks for knowledge base properties by generating a large amount of labeled data automatically. In other words, the predicate in a sentence will be linked or mapped to the possible properties which are defined by some ontologies in the knowledge base. This lexical and ontological linking of information provides us with a way of generating structured information and a basis for enrichment of the knowledge base.

  • This study proposes an algorithm for predicting breast cancer prognosis based on genetic network. We identify prognosis-specific network using gene expression data and PPI(protein-protein interaction) data. To acquire the network, we calculate Pearson's correlation coefficient(PCC) between genes in all PPI pairs using gene expression data. We develop a prediction model for breast cancer patients with estrogen-receptor-negative using the network as a classifier. We compare classification performance of our algorithm with existing algorithms on independent data and shows our algorithm is improved. In addition, we make an functionality analysis on the genes in the prognosis-specific network using GO(Gene Ontology) enrichment validation.

  • This study was to suggest the creation of hybrid bibliographic records in complicated bibliographic environment applying both AACR2 and RDA for uniform display and correct search. The literature reviews and case studies were used as the research methods. In case studies, Kent State University, University of Houston as the libraries, and Backstage Library Works as algorithm converting to hybrid records were surveyed. For creating the hybrid records, it was needed to differentiate hybrid records and born RDA records, to keep the data that appeared in 250 tag without spelling out edition data, to maintain 260 tag instead of converting 260 tag to 264 tag, and last to design mapping table for converting GMD to CMC. This study would suggest uniform display and search through hybridization of bibliographic records of foreign resources.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to perform genome (genome wide association studies [GWAS]) and chromosome (CWAS) wide association analyses to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with growth traits in registered Simmental and Simbrah cattle. Methods: The phenotypes were deregressed BLUP EBVs for birth weight, weaning weight direct, weaning weight maternal, and yearling weight. The genotyping was performed with the GGP Bovine 150k chip. After the quality control analysis, 105,129 autosomal SNP from 967 animals (473 Simmental and 494 Simbrah) were used to carry out genotype association tests. The two association analyses were performed per breed and using combined information of the two breeds. The SNP associated with growth traits were mapped to their corresponding genes at 100 kb on either side. Results: A difference in magnitude of posterior probabilities was found across breeds between genome and chromosome wide association analyses. A total of 110, 143, and 302 SNP were associated with GWAS and CWAS for growth traits in the Simmental-, Simbrah- and joint -data analyses, respectively. It stands out from the enrichment analysis of the pathways for RNA polymerase (POLR2G, POLR3E) and GABAergic synapse (GABRR1, GABRR3) for Simmental cattle and p53 signaling pathway (BID, SERPINB5) for Simbrah cattle. Conclusion: Only 6,265% of the markers associated with growth traits were found using CWAS and GWAS. The associated markers using the CWAS analysis, which were not associated using the GWAS, represents information that due to the model and priors was not associated with the traits.
