Method: Data was collected from January to February, 2003. The subjects were 20 adolescents from 13 to 18 years old. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and t-test with the SAS program. Result: There were statistically significant differences in mental health, active coping, positive cognitive restructuring, and support-seeking for problem solving between the experimental group and the control group. Conclusion: The stress management program helped children of alcoholics by enhancing self-esteem, providing information about alcohol, and improving emotional and problem focused coping abilities. This eventually enhanced mental health.

  • We aimed to evaluate the effect of nutrition education program on nutrition knowledge, dietary behavior, dietary intakes and anthropometric parameters in primary school children. Eighty five 4th grade children (boys = 43, girls = 42) were enrolled in the intervention program for 5 months. The subjects were asked to fill out a questionnaire about nutrition knowledge and dietary behavior two times, at the baseline and after completion of the program. Dietary intake information was collected from participants using a 3-day food record and their anthropometric parameters were measured. Upon completion of the intervention program, both nutrition knowledge and dietary behavior scores were significantly improved in all subjects. Energy intake was increased from 1,571.9 kcal to 1,734.1 kcal with significant improvements in nutrient density for protein, Ca, P, K, vitamin A and niacin. While subjects' height, weight, lean body mass and soft lean mass were significantly increased during the program, significant decreases were observed in the rohrer index, percent body fat, waist-hip ratio and body fat mass. The changes in nutrition knowledge scores were positively correlated with the changes in dietary behavior scores, micronutrient intakes and anthropometric parameters. These results indicate that enhancement of nutrition knowledge through well-planned long-term nutrition education program is effective not only for the improvement of dietary behaviors and dietary intakes but also for the positive changes in anthropometric parameters among primary school children.

  • This paper identifies some natural habits and patterns of children's and adolescents' information seeking and use by drawing a wide range of studies conducted with children and adolescents as study participants. The patterns reported here indicate that children's and adolescents' information seeking and use are affected by the nature of information tasks, the qualities of access tools, their cognitive ability to seek and use information, and their prior knowledge and experience about the tasks and topics given. The findings should provide insights for identifying future research issues as well as for programming the information environments particularly conducive to learning.

  • The purpose of the study was to understand how children age 10-13 select books in libraries and to identify their attitudes toward reading itself and library as a space for reading. The study was conducted within the framework of a qualitative study, and the data was collected from 32 children who visited urban public libraries in Seoul during the summer of 2010 through individual interviews. The data collected were analyzed with QSR NVivo9. The results show that (1) children seem to consider libraries as reading places, (2) children seem to understand that reading is an activity conducive to their learning, (3) children themselves selected their books for reading, (4) children used browsing and keyword searching to find the books they like to read, (5) children mentioned the importance of "their interests" and "appropriateness" in selecting books, and (6) there were a variety of factors affecting children's book selection; titles, cover images and illustrations, accessibility of books, genres and subject areas, treatment, favorite authors and books, and publishers.

  • Children seem to be more familiar with getting information from computer and internet than adults, and also it is true that information behavior in the internet has strong influences in the living of the children. When considering this fact, the public library which is the gateway to knowledge should provide a website for children services, allowing to do their life-long learning, read books and access information, without any restrains from time and space. The purpose of this study is to show the importance of public library website, especially for the children, and also to analyze trend of the country and present the solution to the problems. To achieve these goal, the analysis on the websites of the public libraries in Dagu and Gyengbuk area has been conducted. • The purpose of this study is to find a mother's influence on her children regarding environmental preservation. The questions of this study are how a mother's background variables influence on their own behaviors, how the children's background variables influences on their own behaviors, how a mother's background variables influence on their children behaviors. This is used self-writing questionaires the 538 subjects are 4th, 5th and 6th grade children and their mothers living in Kwangiu, in June, 1998. The data are analyzed by Frequency, Percentage, Mean, Pearson's correlation, Regression analysis, Path analysis, Coronbach'$\alpha$ coefficent, and Factor analysis. These are the major resets of this study. 1) In case of mothers, the background variables for them to be influenced the environmental presentation behaviors show the frequency of contact for environmental information, average income, family cohesions, the level of communication, egoistic orientation, and age. 2) In Children, the background variables which are influenced on their environmental presentation behaviors represent the frequency of contact for environmental information, family cohesion, biospheric orientation, and the grade level of children. This is, the children who have the more chance of environmental information contact, the higher family cohesion, the higher biospheric orientation, and the lower grade level show the more environmental preservation behaviors. 3) The children who grow seeing their mothers'environmental behaviors such as sorted disposal, recycle behavior, and purchasing behaviors also show the more same behaviors.

  • This study investigated information acquisition from hypertext and the difference of searching behavior between adults and children. In experiment 1. we compared the amount of information acquisition from the hypertext to that of the printed text. The result showed that the performance in printed text was better than in hypertext. However. the performance of experienced (in the internet) participant showed no difference between the hypertext and the printed text. Experiment 2 compared the information-searching behavior of the adults and children in the hypertext environment. The results showed that adults performed the information-searching faster than children, yet there was no difference in the proportion of correct responses of the two groups. However. children who were more experienced in the internet and produced right answers to the 7th level questions in depth performed better and faster than the adults who were not. These results suggest that the experience in the internet is the most important factor in the searching of the wanted information.

  • Objectives : This present study examined the power of the Korean Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL) subscales to predict a DSM-IV diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Methods : The sample included 37 children and adolescents with ODD and 46 normal controls. The participants and their parents were interviewed for clinical diagnosis using the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) and the parents completed the K-CBCL. Logistic regression analysis was used to predict the diagnosis of ODD. Results : Among the CBCL subscales, Delinquent and Aggressive Behavior scales significantly predicted ODD diagnosis. The means of these CBCL subscales were significantly higher in the ODD group when compared to the controls. Conclusion:Two CBCL subscales (Deliquent and Aggressive Behavior) displayed good diagnostic efficiency for assessing ODD in children and adolescents. Through combining information from the CBCL, an empirical-quantitative approach to psychopathology in children and the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, the results demonstrated that a clinical diagnostic approach is an effective diagnostic paradigm for children with ODD.

  • After the Great East Japan Earthquake, reports and books that compiled the testimonies of the victims were published and the situation of the evacuation at that time became known. However, there is very little information on the evacuation situation of children among these data, and it is not fully known what actions the children took and how they evacuated due to an earthquake or tsunami. The purpose of this study is to analyze and examine children's evacuation behavior in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and to predict children's evacuation behavior for future disasters.
