Elementary School Teachers' Perception on Infographics learning materials (인포그래픽 학습 자료에 대한 초등 교사들의 인식)

  • This study's purpose is to investigate elementary school teachers' perception on infographics learning materials. For this, this study made a questionnaire about infographics cognition or not, the need for development of infographics learning materials, science class applied infographics. And then, this study conducted a survey of 300 elementary school teachers. Through this process, this study had the results that most elementary school teachers had not some experience infographics and had never applied infographics during the class. On the other hand, elementary school teachers who had some experience said that they had used infographics in society subject and science subject. And they said that infographics was used in the development stage of class. In the need for development of infographics learning materials, this study had the results that elementary school teachers recognized the quantities of infographics which could apply in learning materials of elementary school inadequate. And elementary school teachers said that they needed infographics learning materials which could actually apply in class. Also, elementary school teachers said that the subject which could be most applied infographics learning materials was society subject and science subject. And they said that infographics learning materials was a good method which can be applied to third grade and fourth grade in elementary school. In science class applied infographics learning materials, elementary school teachers said that the best class stage to presenting infographics learning materials was full-scale lesson of each chapter in curriculum and they recognized that infographics learning materials must be used for understanding scientific concepts. Add to this, elementary school teachers recognized that the development of learning materials with the application of infographics learning materials must take precedence in order for education applied infographics learning materials to carry out successfully.

Exploring Ways to Improve Science Teacher Expertise through Infographics Creation Teacher Training Program: Focus on the Subject Earth Science (인포그래픽 제작 연수 프로그램을 통한 과학교사 전문성 신장 방안 탐색 -지구과학 교과를 중심으로)

  • In this study, we propose a way to improve science teacher expertise through infographics creation teacher training program by analyzing the infographics types focusing on the Earth Science subject of the 2015 revised curriculum, and inspecting the teachers' utilization of graphic tools. The data visualization characteristics of Earth Science textbooks were analyzed, the execution results of the infographics creation teacher training program were presented, and a survey on science teachers' change in perception and competency of infographics. As a result of the Earth Science textbook analysis, diagram-type, map-type, and comparative analysis-type infographics were frequently used, and were mainly presented as text-assisted-type infographics. The infographics creation teacher training program was conducted five times for 112 science teachers to create the complete, text-assisted, incomplete, and gradient-type infographics. Incomplete infographics for development of evaluation questions were most needed. Although many science teachers recognize the importance of infographics, they lacked the competency to create high-quality infographics because there were no training opportunities for infographics creation. After completing the training, 74.1% of teachers felt that the quality of developments of supplementary textbooks and evaluation questions had improved, and answered that it was helpful in re-educating knowledge and improving teaching-learning methods. Based on the research results, ways to improve science teacher expertise through infographics creation teacher training program were suggested.

Types and Roles of Visualization Materials in Elementary Science Textbook focusing on Infographics (인포그래픽을 중심으로 살펴본 초등 과학교과서 시각화 자료의 유형과 역할)

  • The visualization materials in science textbooks are very important in students' learning. Recent visualizations are increasingly emphasizing the importance of infographic visualizations. The purpose of this study is to analyze the visualization materials in $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ elementary science textbook focusing on infographics. Visualization materials were classified into infographic and simple illustration. Infographics were classified into 8 sub-types. Findings are as follows. First, infographics were 19.0%, and simple illustrations were 81.0% among elementary textbooks' visualization materials. The portion of infographic varied by content areas. In Biology and Earth Science area, the portions of infographic were high. Second, several types of infographics were used in elementary science textbooks. Timeline infographic were the most frequent, and emphasis infographic, concept mapping infographic, comparison infographic were used frequently. The most frequent types of infographic were different by content area. Third, infographics used more than simple illustrations in the role of concept explanation. Educational implications on science textbook's infographics were discussed.

Instructional Effect of Infographics Construction in Elementary Science (초등 과학 수업에서 학생주도 인포그래픽 구성 활동의 효과)

  • Students are exposed to many visual representations in various visual cultures. Infographics combining visual representations and writing can effectively convey information. Also it can be efficient ways for teachers to focus on important contents. Students can use infographics as a method directly to organize information. Therefore, the infographics that students use both writings and images directly and visually will be more effective on elementary school science classes than the workbook. Classes are guided with the same scientific inquiry and experiment written on the science textbook. The experimental group students organized scientific inquiry by infographics, while the comparison group students still used the workbook. First, the types of infographics are determined by what students want to explain. Based on learning objectives, students used the right type of infographics to effectively convey their focus on information. Second, the infographics organizing activities used in the classes had a significant effect on students' academic achievement. Also, the infographics organizing classes are positively associated to science-related attitudes, including such+ as 'Leisure Interest in Science', 'Adoption of Scientific Attitudes', and 'Attitude to Scientific Inquiry'. Third, visual tendency and classroom treatments had no interactions, but the experimental group had a positive impact regardless of student's characteristics. Fourth, experimental group showed positive attitudes toward to students' perception of infographics. Since some of students had difficulties organizing information in infographics, further research is required to enable students to reduce their burden in application of infographics.

  • Recently, Big Data is a buzzword in the creative economy generation. The organizations related to spatial information society focus on building the spatial big data systems. As spatial big data is a combination of spatial information and big data, the data visualization is essential in order to utilize them efficiently. One of the great methodologies for data visualization is infographics. Nationally, Chousn.com initiated the infographics news in 2010. Korean Administration Branches also recognized the importance of infographic and they adopted infographics for their briefings from 2013. Internationally, Visual.ly is leading company in the infographics market and they produced noticeable interactive infographics for Egypt Parliamentary Elections results. In the defense part, Guardian's datajournalism of Afghanistan war log was a good example of utilizing infographics. Throughout the research, five requirements are extracted. First source data should have precision and accuracy in terms of time and space manner. Second, infographics images have a compressibility. Third, the infographics is properly processed for military commanders. Fourth, sharing, openness and communication are essential for high quality infographic. Lastly, infographics should be an analytic tool for predicting future event based on the past data. Infographics is not a direct representation of data but an analytic tool for helping user's choice and decision in critical moments.

The Direction of Infographics Design of Election Results by Deriving Design Factors -Focused on infographics design of the 21st national assembly election results- (디자인 속성지표 도출을 통한 선거 결과 인포그래픽 디자인 방향 -제21대 국회의원 선거 결과 인포그래픽 디자인을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to derive design factors to provide inclusive information without encouraging the division of region and ideology, and to present the prospects of election result infographics design through evaluation and interpretation of the based design factors. First, the methods and results of the study identify the characteristics of infographics design through theoretical considerations to confirm the importance of visualizing data, and the case study of infographics design as the main flow is cathogram-style design using various forms of digital interaction. Second, the 21 st National Assembly election of Korea resulted in the response to infographics design and evaluated and analyzed the suitability of design factors through surveys and expert interview for five designs selected (suitable for purpose, convenient, aesthetic, easy of understanding, and public concern). In conclusion, it is predicted that the election results infographics design will evolve to offset regional and ideological division by providing inclusive information tailored to consumer needs by providing different types of infographics designs that meet basic objectives and functions.

Values of Infographics for Promoting Cultural Learning Resources and Tourist Attractions: A Case of Patum Village in Thailand

  • Infographics are influential and valuable communication tools for providing information, and can be used for promoting cultural learning resources and cultural tourism destinations. Therefore, this article presents values of using infographics for promoting Patum's culture and tourism in Phrao District, Chiang Mai, Thailand as cultural learning resources and tourist attractions. Employing a research and development approach, this study utilized three distinct instruments: (1) an interview form engaging 40 locals to uncover insights on promoting Patum village, (2) an assessment form evaluated by three arts and design experts, and (3) questionnaires distributed to 92 participants to gauge perceptions and satisfaction. The findings showcased the high quality and appropriateness of the eight infographics. Audiences derived six key values, including acquiring knowledge, fostering the promotion of Patum's culture, festivals, religions and beliefs, deriving aesthetic enjoyment, encouraging cultural tourism, contributing to the education sector, and enhancing comprehension of Patum's history. Participants expressed high satisfaction ($\bar{x}$=4.46) with the infographic use. The developed infographics are usable and valuable information to help audiences recognize Patum cultural learning resources and tourist destinations. They might be further tailored to the recognition of Patum village in the near future, affecting the area's development by increasing local people's incomes through cultural learning resources and tourism activities.

The Effect of Physics Instruction Using Infographics Based on Visual Thinking in High School (고등학교에서 시각적 사고에 기반한 인포그래픽 활용 물리 수업의 효과)

  • In this study, we tried to find the effects of carrying out infographics instruction based on visual thinking with the infographics materials presented in physics textbooks targeting specialized vocational high school students. Thus, 60 students were divided into the experimental group and the control group, the experimental group had 25 classes composed of 'infographics concept formation, infographics understanding activity, and infographics configuration activity', on the other hand, the control group were instructed by lecture-type class. The results of this study are as follows: First, features of the infographics created by the students include changes in types of presentation from 'simple arrangement' to 'simple reconfiguration' and from 'illustration' to 'comparative analysis', which were made by the visual thinking of the students activated in accordance with the increase of their configuration times. Second, instruction by using infographics, visual thinking significantly improved in the level of understanding, visibility, usability, and communicability. Third, after instruction using infographics, the mean score of the experimental group's achievement significantly improved. Fourth, there was a significant improvement in the area of 'normality of scientist, attitude on scientific inquiry, and scientific attitude' in the test of attitudes toward science. From the analysis results, we could conclude that instruction using infographics enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and communication capability by improving visual thinking abilities, which have a positive impact on academic achievement and attitudes toward science.

A Study on Visualizing Method and Expression for Big Data (빅데이터를 위한 데이터 시각화 방법과 표현 연구 (광주 대중버스노선 이용 실태를 적용한 태블루를 활용한 시각화 표현))

  • The importance of data is increasing at a high rate as data is massively generated and taken into account in various policy supports and contents. However, because of their speed of growth, it is difficult to find the data that is needed. Both the methodological elements that summarize the data and the technical elements of the visualization that help to see at a glance are important. This paper summarizes data visualization methods to improve the currently used design - oriented infographics and propose data - centric infographics. In addition, we will present examples of data analysis and infographics production using Tableau Public. The Gwangju metropolitan city bus user data was used for infographics production, and the results show that the total number of passengers using the stopping point is similar to that of the general passengers, while it is different from the numbers of transit passengers and teen riding-and-transit passengers. Data-centric infographics visualization, unlike existing infographics that is pronounced only as a visual role, is expected to be used as a tool for scientific research as well as efficiently delivering data.

An Analysis of the Infographics Features of Visualization Materials in Section 'Information and Communication' of Physics I Textbook (물리 I 교과서의 '정보와 통신' 단원에 제시된 시각화 자료의 인포그래픽 특징 분석)

  • In this study, we try to examine its features by using the methods of systematic infographics analysis for visualization materials that are used in Physics I textbooks. Thus, after developing the analytical framework infographics, visualization materials is described in the section "information and communication" and have been analyzed separately as "data visualization" and "Infographics." The results of this study are as follows. First, the analysis framework of infographics can be classified contents of the information, visual representation, and media method. Second, the visualization materials that are displayed in the section "information and communication" of Physics I textbook are of higher quality than most schematized data that are graphically, simple information. Third, the features of visualization materials in textbooks have many relations & functions on 'information content', text & metaphor on 'visual element', illustration & comparison on 'expression type', graphic on 'expression mode', printed matter on 'media method', and horizontal & vertical type on 'the flow of attention'. From the analysis results, in the section "information and communication" of Physics I textbook uses a lot of visualization materials, however it does not provide rich infographics but only simple graphical materials. By utilizing the results of the analysis of textbook and analysis framework of infographics, which has been developed through the this study, let us hope that the opportunity to be able to grasp the importance of infographics in science education be provided.
