  • This paper proposes a SSSC based on 3-level half-bridge inverters. The dynamic characteristic of the proposed SSSC was analyzed by EMTP simulation and a scaled hardware model, assuming that the SSSC is inserted in the transmission line of the one-machine-infinite-but power system. The proposed SSC has six 3-level half-bridge inverters per phase, which operates in PWM mode. The proposed SSSC generates a quasi-sinusoidal output voltage by 90 degree phase shift to the line current. The proposed SSSC does not require the coupling transformer for voltage injection, and has a flexibility in operation voltage by increasing the number of series connection.

  • This article describes a simple method for generating the walking trajectory for the biped humanoid robot. The method used a simple inverted model instead of complex multi-mass model and a reasonable explanation for the model simplification is included. The problem of gait trajectory generation is to find the solution from the desired ZMP trajectory to CoG trajectory. This article presents the analytic solution for the bipedal gait generation on the bases of ZMP trajectory. The presented ZMP trajectory has Fourier series form, which has finite or infinite summation of sine and cosine functions, and ZMP trajectory can be designed by calculating the coefficients. From the designed ZMP trajectory, this article focuses on how to find the CoG trajectory with analytical way from the simplified inverted pendulum model. Time segmentation based approach is adopted for generating the trajectories. The coefficients of the function should be designed to be continuous between the segments, and the solution is found by calculating the coefficients with this connectivity conditions. This article also has the proof and the condition of solution existence.

  • In this study, a transfer matrix method in which can produce an infinite number of accurate natural frequencies using a single element for the bending vibration of rotating Bernoulli-Euler beam with linearly reduced width, is developed. The roots of the differential equation in the proposed method are calculated using the Frobenius method in the power series solution. To demonstrate the accuracy of the method, the calculated natural frequencies are compared with the results given by using the commercial finite element analysis program(ANSYS), and the comparison results between these two methods show the excellent agreement. Based on the comparison results, a parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of the centrifugal forces on the non-dimensional natural frequencies for rotating beam with the variable width.

  • This paper describes the application of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) which can have significant impact on power system dynamics. The function of the FLC is to control the firing angle of the TCSC. We tuned the scaling factors of the FLC using Tabu Search. The proposed FLC is used for damping the low frequency oscillations caused by disturbances such as the sudden changes of small or large loads or the outages in the generators or transmission lines. To evaluate usefulness of the proposed FLC, we performed the computer simulation fur single-machine infinite system. The response of FLC is compared with that of PD controller optimized using Tabu Search. Simulation results that the FLC shows better control performance than PD controller.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the q-Apostol type Frobenius-Euler numbers and polynomials. By using generating functions for these numbers and polynomials, we derive some alternative summation formulas including powers of consecutive q-integers. By using infinite series representation for q-Apostol type Frobenius-Euler numbers and polynomials including their interpolation functions, we not only give some identities and relations for these numbers and polynomials, but also define generating functions for new numbers and polynomials. Further we give remarks and observations on generating functions for these new numbers and polynomials. By using these generating functions, we derive recurrence relations and finite sums related to these numbers and polynomials. Moreover, by applying higher-order derivative to these generating functions, we derive some new formulas including the Hurwitz-Lerch zeta function, the Apostol-Bernoulli numbers and the Apostol-Euler numbers. Finally, for an application of the generating functions, we derive a multiplication formula, which is very important property in the theories of normalized polynomials and Dedekind type sums.

  • A new method to reduce the computation time in power/ground-plane analysis is proposed. The existing method using the two dimensional infinite series summation take a lot of computation time. The proposed method is based on the approximation of impedance in the frequency domain through the Mobius transform. This method shows the good accuracy and the high speed in computing. In the case of impedance calculation for 9'x4' board, the proposed method takes 0.16 second of computing time whereas the existing method takes 2.2 second. This method can be applied to the analysis and design of power/ground-plane that need a lot of computation steps.

  • Until a recent date, the surface finish generated in turning by the conventional cutting tool is directly related to the feed rate and the size of the tool nose radius. With this tool a large feed rate will give poorer surface finish and a large nose radius will generate a better surface finish. Recently a new concept in the tool design is introduced to achieve a better surface finish at a higher feed rate. This is the wiper tool, which has the portion of nose with infinite radius. This can remove the ridges left when the conventional tool is used. In this study two series of cutting tests with the wiper tool and the conventional tool are carried out under the various cutting conditions of cutting depth, feed rate and cutting speed. The effects of the wiper design and the cutting conditions on the surface roughness resulted are carefully examined and compared.

  • Free vibrations of strings due to initial conditions have been analyzed by the conventional mode summation method, and the nondimensionalized displacements and velocities have been derived in the form of infinite series. The results show wave propagating phenomena and confirmed by experiments using the high speed camera. Other physical characteristics have been discussed and examined with help of waveform solutions.

  • This paper proposes an SSSC based on multi-bridge inverters in PWM scheme. The proposed system consists of 6 H-bridge inverter modules per phase. The dynamic characteristic of proposed system was analyzed by simulation with EMTP codes, assuming that the SSSC is inserted in the 154-kV transmission line of one-machine-infinite-bus power system. The feasibility of hardware implementation was verified through experimental works with a scaled-model. The proposed system can be directly inserted in the transmission line without coupling transformers, and has flexibility in expanding the operation voltage by increasing the number of H-bridges.

  • This paper describes a switching-level simulation model and scaled hardware model for SSSC, which is useful for analyzing the dynamic interaction between the SSC and the power transmission system. A detailed simulation model with EMTP was developed to verity the SSSC operation with control system, and its increasing capability of power transmission through the line for a typical one-machine infinite-bus system. The simulation results of the developed model are compared with the experimental results froma scaled model fo 2KVA rating for evaluation the whole system operation.
