There are big differences in six sigma projects between manufacturing processes and transactional/service processes. This paper analyzed the differences between the two areas by examining 18 six sigma case studies in Korean companies. To characterize six sigma case studies, step-by-step questions and check criteria were developed based on 12 step DMAIC methodology. On the basis of those characterized data, the differences between two areas were analyzed. Significant differences were found in the number of CTQs, validation of measurement systems, methods to determine improvement objectives, the methods to elicit improvement plans and types of control systems. The most significant difference was that statistical tools were widely used in manufacturing processes, but qualitative tools were used in transactional/service processes during improvement phase.
Business processes are often of long duration, and include internal worker's decision making, which makes business processes to be exposed to many exceptional situations. These properties of business processes makes it difficult to guarantee successful termination of business processes at the design phase. The behavioral properties of business processes mainly depends on the data aspects of business processes. To formalize the data aspect of process modeling, this paper proposes a graph-based model, called Data Dependency Graph (DDG), constructed from dependency relationships specified between business data. The paper also defines a mechanism of describing a set of mapping rules that generates a process model semantically equivalent to a DDG, which is accomplished by allocating data dependencies to component activities.

Batch processes are a significant class of processes in the process industry and play an important role in the production of high quality speciality materials. Examples include the production of semiconductors, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biochemicals. With on-line sensors connected to most batch processes, massive amounts of data are being collected routinely during the batch on easily measured process variables such as temperatures, pressures, and flowrates. In this paper, multivariate SPC charts for on-line monitoring of the progress of new batches are developed which utilize the information in the on-line measurements in real-time. We propose the formation of statistical model which describes the normal operation of a batch at each time interval during the batch operation. An on-line monitoring scheme based on the proposed method can handle both cross-correlation among process variables at any one time and auto-correlation over time. And the control limits for the monitoring charts are established from sound statistical framework unlike previous researches which use the external reference distribution. The proposed charts perform real-time, on-line monitoring to ensure that the batch is progressing in a manner that will lead to a high-quality product or to detect and indicate faults that can be corrected prior to completion of the batch. This approach is capable of tracking the progress of new batch runs, identifying the time periods in which the fault occurred and detecting underlying cause.

With growing applications of wireless video streaming, an efficient video traffic model featuring modern high-compression techniques is more desirable than ever, because the wireless channel bandwidths are ever limited and time-varying. We propose a modeling and analysis method for video traffic by a class of stochastic processes, which we call '$GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input processes'. We model video traffic by $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input process with gamma-distributed batch sizes Y and Weibull-like autocorrelation function. Using four real-encoded, full-length video traces including action movies, a drama, and an animation, we evaluate our modeling performance against existing model, transformed-M/G/${\infty}$ input process, which is one of most recently proposed video modeling methods in the literature. Our proposed $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ model is observed to consistently provide conservative performance predictions, in terms of packet loss ratio, within acceptable error at various traffic loads of interest in practical multimedia streaming systems, while the existing transformed-M/G/${\infty}$ fails. For real-time implementation of our model, we analyze G/D/1/K queueing systems with $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input process to upper estimate the packet loss probabilities.

The stiffness of multi-articulated industrial robots is very weak, because their structure is an articulated type with some links and joints. Thus it is known that cutting processes for metals are not accepted in machine shop well, but they have a lot of merits for cutting processes, for example, drilling, tapping, and engraving etc, because of the characteristics of their high degree of freedom. The temptation of cutting aluminium was carried out to investigate the feasibility and the limitations or constraints for cutting metals on them. First the mode shapes of 6 degree of freedom welding robot were taken and analysed, and next the cutting processes were practically carried out on it. The results of study were found out to show the feasibility of cutting processes at drilling under 6mm of tool diameter, as well as to have some limitations and constraints, for examples, feed rate, depth of cut and cutting force etc.
Here, as-synthesized $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles were incorporated into the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) lattice to activate sodium percarbonate (SPC) for degradation of methylene blue (MB). The reaction rate constant of $Fe_3O_4@ZIF-8/SPC$ process ($0.0632min^{-1}$) at acidic conditions (pH = 3) was more than six times that of the $Fe_3O_4/SPC$ system ($0.009min^{-1}$). Decreasing the solute concentration, along with increasing SPC concentration and $Fe_3O_4@ZIF-8$ nanocomposite (NC) dosage, favored the catalytic degradation of MB. The $Fe_3O_4@ZIF-8$ NC after fifteen consecutive treatment processes showed the excellent stability with a negligible drop in the efficiency of the system (<10%). The reaction pathway was obtained via GC-MS analysis.
These days, public attention is being directed to the design processes by which a final outcome can be produced to achieve its goal according to the logical plans, as it is hard to address recent problems in design by the existing intuitive way due to the paradigm shift of design. Thus, this study aims to suggest creative fashion design processes to create a product as a final outcome by intentional and systematic processes. This study showed that design is considered as comprehensive problem solving processes, and it proposes framework of processes by integrating processes of industrial design and fashion design. In addition, this study classified creativity development methods that can be implemented to fashion design into promotion of ideas, breaking out of stereotypes, and extension of search areas. These creativity development methods can be applied to fashion design processes in order to make plans and strategies systematically and help you to choose the best ways to solve problems by processes.

This paper develops a multistage scheduling algorithm for the module operation of the LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) production systems and tests the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The module operation is a multistage form composed of multiple sub operations of processes, and each stage is consists of multiple lines with the same kinds of machines. This paper presents a mathematical modeling reflecting the constraints of the LCD module operation and develops a multistage scheduling algorithm based on tabu search metaheuristic approach. For this purpose, an production order is assigned to a line of the sub operations and a sequence of the assigned order is rearranged to draw an efficient schedule. Simulation experiments test performance measures and show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
In this study we consider the problem of MPS(master production planning) of TFT-LCD(Thin Film Transistor - Liquid Crystal Display) production factory. Due to the complexities of the TFT-LCD production processes, it is difficult to build effective MPS. This study presents an algorithm having a concept of IDPQ(Ideal Daily Production Quantity) that considers line balancing of TFT-LCD production process. In general, the MPS building procedure does not consider line balancing in non-bottleneck processes. MPS without considering line balancing may make ineffective schedule. We present algorithms for building MPS considering factory capacity and line balancing according to the sales order.

In this paper, we analyze and review introduction, implementation, and revision phases in the six sigma movement in LG Electronics. In LG Electronics, 6 sigma activities have been activated not only at manufacturing divisions but also in transactional processes, business, product R&D, marketing, and software development. At present, six sigma is a tool to improve processes and also become the engine of the business innovation. In this paper, concepts and contents of an on-going LG innovation process called TDR(Tear Down & Redesign) are explained in detail. We also propose important aspects and give the future prospect for six sigma.
