  • When radon is staying at alveoli and bronchial tubes, the collapse of radon creates progeny nuclides (alpha ray, beta ray, gamma ray, etc.). They emit radiation causing a mutation in the chromosome of the cell, resulting in lung cancer. In other words, the main cause of lung cancer is radiation emitting as the result of radon collapse rather than radon gas. The 82% of radiation exposed to people is the natural radiation. Most of the natural radiation is radon. If we properly control the concentration of radon indoors, the probability of occurrence of lung cancer could be decreases to be 70%. Until now, to measure the indoor radon concentration, imported radon sensors are needed. So, DB construction of indoor radon emission and popular radon measuring apparatus should be developed. In this paper, we propose the radon detecting method using PIN photodiode. Also, we confirmed the PIN photodiode could be used as radon sensor module through some experimental studies.

  • Formaldehyde has been in widespread industrial use since World War II . Numerous sources of formaldehyde are present in the indoor environment. Additionally, the current trend toward tighter, more energy efficient buildings with lower ventilation rates has led to increase concentrations of this and other pollutants generated indoors. In this paper, the field survey was carried out once a month from January to MarctL 1994 to measure indoor and outdoor formaldehyde concentration in several underground locations in Seoul. The results could be summarized as follows : 1. At Yang- jae underground shopping center, the mean formaldehyde concentration was 77.8ppb for indoor and 68.4ppb for outdoor. At Ban- po underground shopping center, it was 175.8ppb for indoor and 127.3ppb for outdoor. At Jam- shil underground shop ping center, it was 135.2ppd for indoor and 34.6ppb for outdoor. Indoor the No.2 sub way line, it was 105.6ppb. The formaldehyde concentration using Berge equation was as follows : At Yang- jae underground shopping center, the mean formaldehyde concentration was 85.99ppb for indoor and 72.75ppb for outdoor At Ban- po underground shopping center, it was 254. 17ppb for indoor and 138.14ppb for outdoor. At Jam- shil underground shopping center, it was 249.13ppb for indoor and 36.87ppb for outdoor. Indoor the No.2 subway line, it was 131.73ppb. 3, The result of correlation analysis indicated that the relationship between temperature and formaldehyde concentration is very high( $\gamma $= 0.831 ∼ 0.974). 4. Also, the relationship between humidity and formaldehyde concentration is variant ($\gamma $ = 0.246 ∼0.999). 5. The mean formaldehyde concentration indoor and outdoor Ban- po underground shop ping center and indoor Jam- shil underground shopping center and indoor the No.2 sub way line exceed the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, Air- conditioning Engineers( ASHRAE) stflndard of 100ppb(120 $\mu $g/m$^{3}$).

  • This study performed the prediction about the indoor contaminant's diffusion characteristics which can be affected by the mechanical ventilation system on a training ship. The results are as followings. It is clear that the contaminants are spread to most of the indoors, regardless of the contamination beginning zone. About 65~100 minutes later, the contaminant densities of whole indoor zones are evaluated as clean. Comparing the contamination beginning zone being located at higher deck(scenario A) to the contamination beginning zone being located at lower deck(scenario B), although the contaminant density by scenario A is 10 times higher than that by scenario B, the number of contaminated zones are 50% less. The contaminant densities are evaluated as to be rapidly decreased when the outside air induction ratio against design volume is over 75%.

  • The objective of the present study was to review the current research about the outcomes of horticultural activity interventions in order to determine research trends and analyze the characteristics of horticultural activity interventions. We reviewed the literature using search engines such as the Web of Science, Proquest Dissertation and Theses, Academic Search Premier, Research Information sharing Service, and Korean National Assembly Digital Library to locate journal articles that include relevant search terms (e.g., gardening activity, gardening program, allotment garden, urban agriculture, horticultural therapy, and horticultural activity). We initially identified 14,414 journal articles that were published before April 2014 and selected 509 of the papers for review. We found that studies investigating treating children and adults 8 to 64 years old were the most common, and horticultural activities such as gardening outdoors, planting indoors, making crafts with live plants, arranging flowers, making crafts with artificial or pressed flowers, and other activities were usually combined. Short/medium term (11 to 20 sessions) horticultural activity programs were the most frequent, and most interventions were of medium duration (> 60 min to 120 min). Most of the studies focused on the psychological or emotional effects of horticultural intervention, such as its effects on emotional intelligence, self-esteem, stress, and depression. Further studies are needed to analyze the research methodology, specific outcomes, and strengths or weaknesses of studies investigating horticultural activity interventions.

  • With the increasing popularity of mobile devices, it has become necessary to protect private information and content in these devices. Face recognition has been favored over conventional passwords or security keys, because it can be easily implemented using a built-in camera, while providing user convenience. However, because mobile devices can be used both indoors and outdoors, there can be many illumination changes, which can reduce the accuracy of face recognition. Therefore, we propose a new face recognition method on a mobile device robust to illumination variations. This research makes the following four original contributions. First, we compared the performance of face recognition with illumination variations on mobile devices for several illumination normalization procedures suitable for mobile devices with low processing power. These include the Retinex filter, histogram equalization and histogram stretching. Second, we compared the performance for global and local methods of face recognition such as PCA (Principal Component Analysis), LNMF (Local Non-negative Matrix Factorization) and LBP (Local Binary Pattern) using an integer-based kernel suitable for mobile devices having low processing power. Third, the characteristics of each method according to the illumination va iations are analyzed. Fourth, we use two matching scores for several methods of illumination normalization, Retinex and histogram stretching, which show the best and $2^{nd}$ best performances, respectively. These are used as the inputs of an SVM (Support Vector Machine) classifier, which can increase the accuracy of face recognition. Experimental results with two databases (data collected by a mobile device and the AR database) showed that the accuracy of face recognition achieved by the proposed method was superior to that of other methods.

  • Situation awareness services which increasingly expand their influence in everyday life can be classified into location-based service and social network service. Their quality of service (QoS) can be differed based on the location accuracy of smart phones and accuracy of directional recognition technology. This study was conducted to analyze GPS, digital compass, radio communication, and geospatial web information which can provide a clue in using the situation aware services based on lab experiments and surveys. According to the result of lab experiment on accuracy of determining location / direction with smart phones, owing to inherent lack of indoor accuracy in determining position and direction, as well as errors in spatial data used as platform, it was found that devices were not provided with sufficiently accurate data when using the situation aware services indoors compared to outdoors. To enhance accuracy of determining indoor positions, there are several methods including location metering based on Wi-Fi, which had several problems compared with GPS used in outdoor environment. Thus, it was determined that more study would be necessary to solve these issues.

  • We studied fire properties of MOF(Metering Out Fit) insulation cover and field condition of 22.9kV power receiving system. $49.5\%$ of formal equipments were installed indoors, whereas $40.8\%$ of informal equipments were installed as H-type. Insulation treatment was not done at a $22.4\%$ ratio of main line($27.7\%$ of transformer, $70.2\%$ of COS, $10.4\%$ of MOF). Fire pattern analysis showed that the fire started at the secondary part of OC wire. In the result of DTA(Differential Thermal Analysis), normal cover showed exothermic reactions at $310^{\circ}C,\;399^{\circ}C\;and\;510^{\circ}C$ (endothermic reactions at $382^{\circ}C$). Whereas damaged cover showed exothermic reactions at $412^{\circ}C$(endothermic reactions at $389^{\circ}C$). In the result of TGA(Thermo Gravimetric Analysis), the thermal weight change of normal cover was similar compared to damaged cover. In the result of FT-IR analysis, normal cover showed absorption peaks at $3,024cm^{-l},\;2,921cm^{-l},\;1,600cm^{-1},\;1,492cm^{-1},\;1,451cm^{-1},\;1,154cm^{-l},\;1,027cm^{-1},\;906cm^{-1}$. Whereas, in case of tracked cover, the absorption peaks that were shown in normal cover disappeared and different absorption peak was shown at $966cm^{-1}$.

  • Indoor air quality is the dominant contributor to total personal exposure because most people spend a majority of their time indoors. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the alternative method for improvement of indoor air quality in house after coating titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photocatalyst for interior part of the house using nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) multiple measurements. To evaluate the alternative method in indoor environment, daily indoor and outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations of an apartment and a detached house were daily measured for consecutive 21 days in winter and summer, respectively, Another daily 21 measurements were carried out after $TiO_2$ coating on wall paper of interior part in houses. All $NO_2$ concentrations were measured by passive filter badges. Indoor air quality models using mass balance are useful tool to quantify the relationship between indoor air pollution levels, ambient concentrations, and explanatory variables. Using a mass balance model and linear regression analysis, penetration factor (ventilation rate divided by sum of ventilation rate and decay rate) and source strength factor (emission rate divided by sum of ventilation rate and decay rate) were calculated. Subsequently, the decay constants were estimated. In this study. magnitude of improvement of indoor air quality could be evaluated by decay constant.

  • Studies evaluating the health effects of hazardous air pollutants assume that people's exposure to typical pollutant level is the same as specific regional pollutant level. However, depending on social and demographic factors, time-activity pattern of people can vary widely. Since most people live in indoor environments over 88% of the day, evaluating exposure to hazardous air pollutants is hard to characterize. Objective of this study was to estimate the exposure levels of university students of $NO_2$, VOCs(BTEX) and $PM_{10}$ using the scenarios with time-activity pattern and indoor concentrations. Using data from time-use survey of National Statistical Office in 2009, we investigated time-activity pattern of university students and hourly major action. A total of 1,057 university students on weekday and 640 on weekend spent their times at indoor house 13.04 hr(54.32%), other indoors 7.70 hr(32.06%), and transportation 2.36 hr(9.83%). Indoor environments in which university students spent their times were mainly house and school. Air pollutants concentrations of other indoor environments except house and school such as bar, internet cafe and billiard hall were higher than outdoors, indicating that indoor to outdoor ratios were above 1. According to three types of exposure scenarios, exposure to air pollutants could be reduced by going home after school.

  • In the future a future type new city and the latest apartment will be built, and the IoT technology will be constructed and combined in large numbers indoors of ordinary households. An air cleaner that makes people in it comfortable is built in, and the suction port that sucks in the air of the air purifier and the discharge port that discharges it are set up around the room and come out. However, this is impossible to adjust because there is only a central switch on / off. Also, consuming a lot of electricity so that many electricity charges are caused by huge electricity consumption will eventually be a waste of resources. This would like to be adjusted and driven through the fine dust detection device to the room built-in air purifier and that has provided a solution to save electricity. In addition, since it exists in and around the room, you can grasp the position of the person and connect to the home network to enhance the convenience. Also, through analysis of the air, we provide a health-check solution that checks the user's health and adjusts it appropriately.
