First records of Hemicyclops tanakai Itoh and Nishida, 2002 and Tisbe ensifer Fischer, 1860 (Crustacea, Copepoda) in Korea

  • Extensive survey of invertebrates in Korea, led by the National Institute of Biological Resources in Incheon, continues to uncover many new and endemic species, but also elements of neighbouring faunas that were previously unknown here. Hemicyclops tanakai Itoh and Nishida, 2002 was originally described from estuarine mud-flats in Tokyo Bay, Japan. We report one male and two females from a sandy beach on Jeju Island, which represent its first record in Korea and second record ever. No morphological differences were observed between these two disjunct populations, so we expect more records of this species in Korea and Japan. Tisbe ensifer Fischer, 1860 was originally described from Madeira and later on reported from numerous other parts of the Northern Atlantic, as well as from the Indian Ocean. We report two females from a shallow littoral in Sokcho, which represents its first record in Korea and the first record in the entire Pacific Ocean. Because of morphological discrepancies reported in previous records we recognize that this species might be in reality a species complex, and we only tentatively identify our Korean specimens as T. cf. ensifer. We provide numerous light photographs of both species in addition to short descriptions, in hope that they might elucidate global problems of their zoogeography and dispersal of small marine invertebrates in general. Further samplings from Korea and other parts of the world will be necessary to test our identifications and phylogenetic relationships of Korean populations with molecular and other tools.

기후예측시스템(GloSea5) 열대성저기압 계절예측 특성 (Seasonal Forecasting of Tropical Storms using GloSea5 Hindcast)

  • Seasonal predictability and variability of tropical storms (TCs) simulated in the Global Seasonal Forecast System version 5 (GloSea5) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) is assessed in Northern Hemisphere in 1996~2009. In the KMA, the GloSea5-Global Atmosphere version 3.0 (GloSea5-GA3) that was previously operated was switched to the GloSea5-Global Coupled version 2.0 (GloSea5-GC2) with data assimilation system since May 2016. In this study, frequency, track, duration, and strength of the TCs in the North Indian Ocean, Western Pacific, Eastern Pacific, and North Atlantic regions derived from the GloSea5-GC2 and GloSea5-GA3 are examined against the best track data during the research period. In general, the GloSea5 shows a good skill for the prediction of seasonally averaged number of the TCs in the Eastern and Western Pacific regions, but underestimation of those in the North Atlantic region. Both the GloSea5-GA3 and GC2 are not able to predict the recurvature of the TCs in the North Western Pacific Ocean (NWPO), which implies that there is no skill for the prediction of landfalls in the Korean peninsula. The GloSea5-GC2 has higher skills for predictability and variability of the TCs than the GloSea5-GA3, although continuous improvements in the operational system for seasonal forecast are still necessary to simulate TCs more realistically in the future.

A new species of Bangiopsis: B. franklynottii sp. nov. (Stylonematophyceae, Rhodophyta) from Australia and India and comments on the genus

  • Small red algae, especially those previously referred to as 'primitive' are often overlooked, but can be quite abundant. These 'primitive' red algae are now placed in several classes distinct from the Florideophyceae, for example the Stylonematophyceae. A brownish-red filamentous alga was collected from a sandy tide pool at Cape Tribulation, Queensland, Australia. Cultured specimens were identified as Bangiopsis and conformed to the morphological characters of the genus (multicellular base, erect filaments branched or unbranched, uniseriate to multiseriate-tubular, single multilobed purple-red to red-brown plastid with central pyrenoid, vegetative cells released directly as spores). Molecular data of two plastid genes (rbcL, psbA) support placement of the Australian isolate and isolates from India in Bangiopsis. The genetic variation between these isolates and isolates from Puerto Rico previously attributed to B. subsimplex indicates that these should be considered as a separate species. As the type locality is in the Atlantic Ocean, French Guiana, and not far from Puerto Rico, and the Puerto Rican isolate has been used often in phylogenetic analyses, we propose that the Indian and Pacific Ocean isolates be designated a new species, B. franklynottii, to acknowledge Ott's many years of research on inconspicuous freshwater and marine red algae. Our research also highlights the lack of careful descriptions in many of the records of this genus and the lack of morphological characters to distinguish species. Especially within the morphologically simple red algae, morphological distinctness does not necessarily reflect evolutionary divergences.

Other faunas, coral rubbles, and soft coral covers are important predictors of coral reef fish diversity, abundance, and biomass

  • Coral reef fisheries are prominent for the archipelagic countries' food sufficiency and security. Studies showed that fish abundance and biomass are affected by biophysical variables. The present study determines which biophysical variables are important predictors of fish diversity, abundance, and biomass. The study used available monitoring data from the Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography, the National Board for Research and Innovation. Data were collected from 245 transects in 19 locations distributed across the Indonesian Archipelago, including the eastern Indian Ocean, Sunda Shelf (Karimata Sea), Wallacea (Flores and Banda Seas), and the western Pacific Ocean. Principal component analysis and multiple regression model were administered to 13 biophysical metrics against 11 variables of coral reef fishes, i.e., diversity, abundance, and biomass of coral reef fishes at three trophic levels. The results showed for the first time that the covers of other fauna, coral rubbles, and soft corals were the three most important predictor variables for nearly all coral reef fish variables. Other fauna cover was the important predictor for all 11 coral reef fish variables. Coral rubble cover was the predictor for ten variables, but carnivore fish abundance. Soft coral cover was a good predictor for corallivore, carnivore, and targeted fishes. Despite important predictors for corallivore and carnivore fish variables, hard coral cover was not the critical predictor for herbivore fish variables. The other important predictor variables with a consistent pattern were dead coral covered with algae and rocks. Dead coral covered with algae was an important predictor for herbivore fishes, while the rock was good for only carnivore fishes.

A Decline of Observed Daily Peak Wind Gusts with Distinct Seasonality in Australia, 1941-2016

  • Wind gusts represent one of the main natural hazards due to their increasing socioeconomic and environmental impacts on, for example, human safety, maritime-terrestrial-aviation activities, engineering and insurance applications, and energy production. However, the existing scientific studies focused on observed wind gusts are relatively few compared to those on mean wind speed. In Australia, previous studies found a slowdown of near-surface mean wind speed, termed "stilling," but a lack of knowledge on the multidecadal variability and trends in the magnitude (wind speed maxima) and frequency (exceeding the 90th percentile) of wind gusts exists. A new homogenized daily peak wind gusts (DPWG) dataset containing 548 time series across Australia for 1941-2016 is analyzed to determine long-term trends in wind gusts. Here we show that both the magnitude and frequency of DPWG declined across much of the continent, with a distinct seasonality: negative trends in summer-pring-autumn and weak negative or nontrending (even positive) trends in winter. We demonstrate that ocean-atmosphere oscillations such as the Indian Ocean dipole and the southern annular mode partly modulate decadal-scale variations of DPWG. The long-term declining trend of DPWG is consistent with the "stilling" phenomenon, suggesting that global warming may have reduced Australian wind gusts.

해양 표적을 이용한 대기 상단 가시영역에서의 복사휘도 모의와 위성 센서 검보정에의 활용 가능성 연구 (Simulation of TOA Visible Radiance for the Ocean Target and its Possible use for Satellite Sensor Calibration)

  • 위성 센서의 대리 검정은 다양한 표적을 이용하여 모의된 대기 상단의 복사휘도를 이용하여 수행된다. 본 연구에서는 인도양과 태평양상에 있는 다섯 개의 해양 표적을 통해 대기상단 가시영역에서의 복사휘도를 계산하고, 위성 센서 검보정에의 활용 가능성에 대해서 알아보았다. 복사전달모델인 65를 통해 계산된 대기상단의 복사휘도를 MODIS/Terra와 SeaWiFS 관측 값과 비교하였으며, 모의를 위하여 이들 위성의 기하정보와 복사계의 특징들이 사용되었다. MODIS/Terra의 에어로솔 광학적 두께 (AOT: Aeroso) Optical Thickness)와 SeaWiFS의 pigment concentrations, OMI의 오존 자료가 모델 입력 값으로 사용되었고 NCEP/NCAR 재분석 자료로부터 바람과 총가강수량에 대한 정보를 얻었다. 전 표적 지역에 대해서 5일 평균한 결과, 2005년 한 해 동안 계산된 복사휘도와 관측된 복사휘도와의 백분율 차이는 약 ${\pm}5%$의 수준으로 나타났고 이것은 계산된 복사휘도가 위성에서의 관측 값과 잘 일치함을 의미한다. 또한 동일 알고리즘으로 약 ${\pm}5%$의 오차수준 이내의 결과를 SeaWiFS를 통해 얻을 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 위성의 가시채널 검보정이 본 연구의 복사휘도 모의 방법을 통해서 ${\pm}5%$의 오차범위 안에서 이루어질 수 있음을 보여준다.

CTD용 박막형 용존산소 센서의 현장 교정 (In-situ Calibration of Membrane Type Dissolved Oxygen Sensor for CTD)

  • 용존산소 센서는 그 특성상 시간이 지남에 따라 자료의 변형(drift)이 일어난다. 따라서 용존산소 센서를 이용하여 해수 중의 정확한 용존산소 농도를 측정하기 위해서는 반드시 용존산소 센서의 현장 교정이 필요하다. 현장 교정 방법과 교정을 위한 적절한 시료의 개수 및 용존산소 센서의 실험실 교정주기를 제시하고자 약 1년에 걸쳐 인도양, 태평양, 동해에서 수행된 세 번의 서로 다른 항차에서 총 133개의 용존산소 분석을 위한 시료를 획득하였다. 화학 분석을 통해 얻은 용존산소 분석값과 센서값을 비교 분석하였다. 그 결과 제조사에서 제시하는 센서의 출력전압과 용존산소 분석값을 비교하기보다는 센서에서 주는 최종 농도값과 분석값을 직접 비교하여 얻은 직선의 관계식을 이용하여 센서의 측정값을 교정하는 것이 바람직하고, 박막형 용존산소 센서의 경우 정확한 보정을 위해서는 최소한 30개 이상의 시료에 대한 분석값을 이용해야 약 1% 이내의 정확도 범위 내에서 현장 교정이 가능하다. 또한 CTD용 박막형 용존산소 센서가 70% 이상의 성능을 내기 위해서는 1년 이내의 주기로 실험실 또는 제조사에서 이루어지는 실험실 교정을 수행할 것을 권장한다.

Strong wind climatic zones in South Africa

  • In this paper South Africa is divided into strong wind climate zones, which indicate the main sources of annual maximum wind gusts. By the analysis of wind gust data of 94 weather stations, which had continuous climate time series of 10 years or longer, six sources, or strong-wind producing mechanisms, could be identified and zoned accordingly. The two primary causes of strong wind gusts are thunderstorm activity and extratropical low pressure systems, which are associated with the passage of cold fronts over the southern African subcontinent. Over the eastern and central interior of South Africa annual maximum wind gusts are usually caused by thunderstorm gust fronts during summer, while in the western and southern interior extratropical cyclones play the most dominant role. Along the coast and adjacent interior annual extreme gusts are usually caused by extratropical cyclones. Four secondary sources of strong winds are the ridging of the quasi-stationary Atlantic and Indian Ocean high pressure systems over the subcontinent, surface troughs to the west in the interior with strong ridging from the east, convergence from the interior towards isolated low pressure systems or deep coastal low pressure systems, and deep surface troughs on the West Coast.

Development of Earthquake Damage Estimation System and its Result Transmission by Engineering Test Satellite for Supporting Emergency

  • Drawing on its extensive experience with natural disasters, Japan has been dispatching Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) team to disaster-stricken countries to provide specialist assistance in rescue and medical operations. The JDR team has assisted in the wake of disasters including the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake in China. Information about the affected area is essential for a rapid disaster response. However, it can be difficult to gather information on damages in the immediate post-disaster period. To help overcome this problem, we have built on an Earthquake Damage Estimation System. This system makes it possible to produce distributions of the earthquake's seismic intensity and structural damage based on pre-calculated data such as landform and site amplification factors for Peak Ground Velocity, which are estimated from a Digital Elevation Model, as well as population distribution. The estimation result can be shared with the JDR team and with other international organizations through communications satellite or the Internet, enabling more effective rapid relief operations.

Traditional medicines for common dermatological disorders in Mauritius

  • This study has been geared to document primary information on common complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) used to treat and/or manage common dermatological disorders in Mauritius, a tropical multicultural island in the Indian Ocean. Data from 355 key informants was collected via a semi-structured questionnaire. Pearson correlation and Chi-squared test were performed to delineate any association. Quantitative indexes including the Importance Value (IV) and fidelity value were calculated. Results tend to indicate that cultural reasons were behind the use of CAM among Mauritians and traditional knowledge was mainly acquired either from parents/relatives or from self-experience. Among the medicinal plants mentioned, Aziadiracta indica (IV = 0.78) and Paederia tomentosa (IV = 0.70) were found to be most used plants. Calendula officinalis (IV = 0.15), Centella asiatica (IV = 0.22) and Agauria salicifolia (IV = 0.11) were also recorded to be used for common dermatological disorders though greatly under-utilised. Animal products were mentioned by 38.0% respondents and cow ghee was found to be commonly used in the management of measles (IV = 0.88). Spiritual healing was found to be used mainly for measles and warts. Given the plethora of novel information documented from the present survey, it can be suggested that the Mauritian population still relies to a great extent on CAM which needs to be preserved and used sustainably. Nonetheless, further investigation is required to probe the possible active constituents that could be the basis of an evidence based investigation to discover new drugs.
