In this study, we isolate and identify bacteria from seawater collected from Jeju coast, to evaluate the antimicrobial activity against the fish pathogenic bacteria. 14 bacterial strains were isolated and identified using physiological, biochemical and molecular tools. Antibacterial activity of all the 14 isolates were screened against four major fish pathogens namely, two Gram-positive: Streptococcus iniae, Streptococcus parauberis and two Gram-negative: Vibrio anguillarum, Edwardsiella tarda. Results revealed that among the 14 isolates, MK-11 was found to have antibacterial activity against S. iniae, S. parauberis, V. anguillarum Particularly, S. iniae was susceptibility with the MIC value of $250{\mu}g/ml$. The biochemical and physio-chemical results reveal that MK-11 had the sugar-alcohol disassemble ability of the D-sorbitol and D-mannitol. Also the utilization of the yeast extract, sorbitol and di-potassium phosphate were noted to be high. The optimum culture condition such as pH and temperature was recorded as pH 6.0, $25^{\circ}C$ and along with 1% NaCl which differs from the previous reports particularly in nutrient resolutions. As results of the analysis of 16S rDNA sequences, MK-11 show the high similarity with Paenibacillus polymyxa, P. jamilae, P. brasilensis 99.78%, 99.43%, 99.39%, repectively. Hence, in the present study, the isolated Paemibacillus sp. MK-11 from Jeju seawater possesses the antibacterial activity against fish pathogens and it could be used as a new antibiotic agents against the gram positive fish pathogens.

The new sixteen herbicidal N-2-(1-hydroxy-2-fluoroethyl)-6-substituted(X)-benzenesulfonyl-N'-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidinyl-2-yl urea derivatives(S) were synthesized and thier herbicidal activities$(pI_{50})$ in vivo against rice(Orysa Sativa L.), Barnyard grass(Echninochloa orizicola) and Bulrush(Scirpus juncoides) were measured by the pot test under paddy conditions. The structure activity relationship(SAR) were studied using the physicochemical parameters of ortho-substituents(X) and hydrolysis rate constant(logk) and herbicidal activities by the multiple regression technique. The SAR suggested that the herbicidal activities were more dependant on the hydrolysis rate constant(logk>0) than the steric constants $(Es, small width($B_4$) and length($L_1$). Among them, halogens(2 & 5), methyl(15) and non(H) substituent(1) showed higher herbicidal activity for weeds which was not tolerent to rise and weeds. The herbicidal activity was increased and the persistency in aqueous solution was decreased by electron donating(${\sigma}0<0$) groups as ortho-substituent(X). From the relationship equation between herbicidal activity and hydrolysis rate constant, it was assumed that the both reactions would be proceeds with similar process. And the conditions on the ortho substituents to show higher herbicidal activity and the persistency in aqueous solution were also discussed.
We investigated a method to improve anticancer activities of Acer mono wood extracts by ultra high pressure extraction process. The A. mono was extracted by water at $40^{\circ}C$ and 300 MPa for 15 min (High Pressure Extraction, HPE). The extraction yield by ultra high pressure extraction process was 5.42%. The cytotoxicity on human normal lung cell (HEL299) of the extracts from HPE showed 21.54% lower than that from conventional water extraction at $100^{\circ}C$ in adding the maximum concentration of 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$. Ultra high pressure extracts process for 15 minutes extracts (HPE15) showed more potent scavenging effect than the control, BHA. On SOD-like test, the HPE15 showed highest activity as 32.4% at 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ concentration. Human stomach adenocarcinoma, liver adenocarcinoma, breast adenocarcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma cell growth were inhibited up to about 67~79%, in adding 1.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ of extracts from HPE. HPE was 20~25% higher than conventional water extraction. It was interesting that, among several cancer cell lines (stomach adenocarcinoma, liver adenocarcinoma), the growth of digestive related cancer cells were most effectively inhibited as about 75~79%. On in vivo experiment using ICR mice, the variation of body weight of mice group treated A. mono wood extracts from HPE of 100 mg/kg/day concentration was very lower than control and other group. The survival times of group treated this extracts was 61.96% longer than that of the control group and this extracts showed the lower tumor weight, which were 10.49 g than positive control as 16.17 g. Based on these results, we could tell that the HPE wood extracts of A. mono had higher anticancer activity than conventional water extraction. The results of HPE showed obvious advantages in higher efficiency, shorter extraction time, at lower energy costs.

The present study was carried out to investigate the in vivo single-dose acute toxicity of Bacillus subtilis JNS isolated from Cheonggukjang, which is a probiotic candidate showing strong and broad antibacterial activity. The test sample was orally administrated to male and female ICR mice at a highest dose of 2,000 mg/kg for 14 days. No significant change in general conditions, mortalities, body weight changes, clinical signs, autopsy findings, or presence of gross lesions was observed in either sex of mice. The results indicate that up to 2,000 mg/kg of B. subtilis JNS had no adverse effect on ICR mice.

Lips have a unique desquamation process and moisturizing properties that are structurally different from ordinary skin. In particular, the turnover cycle of the stratum corneum is fast and the outermost stratum corneum is thin, so the amount of keratin is relatively high, and there are no skin appendages, so it is very vulnerable to maintaining moisture. In this study, we set three targets for lip care : stratum corneum, moisture, and barrier, and aimed to identify the potential of three target-specific ingredients for lips improvement. We confirmed the exfoliating, moisturizing, and barrier improvement efficacy of three target-specific ingredients which also have mild exfoliating effect. Specifically, we verified that Bacillus clausii extract improved skin exfoliation, gluconolactone improved skin moisture retention, and serine reinforced skin barrier function. To test the in vivo efficacy of the complex composed of three target-specific ingredients on the human lips, the lip balm manufactured with non-irritating range of concentration was applied, and we confirmed that it was effective in improving lip exfoliation·moisturizing·elasticity·wrinkles. Consequently, it was confirmed that the beauty and health indicators of the lips could be improved through the exfoliation-moisturization-barrier care of the lips and these ingredients were applied to LG H&H LIPCERIN products.
An in vivo oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed on hyperglycemic male Sprague-Dawley rats to assess the effect of fruits and vegetables ($1g{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ body weight) on blood glucose levels (${\Delta}BGLs$) at different time intervals of 0, 5, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min. The areas under glucose curve (${\Delta}AUCs$) were calculated at 120 min of OGTT by trapezoid method. Total phenolic content (TPC) and anti-oxidant activity (AOA) of fruits and vegetables were assayed in vitro by Folin Ciocalteu and DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) methods, respectively. At the end of the experiment the correlations among the parameters TPC, AOA and ${\Delta}AUC$ was estimated by Pearson's correlations. Among fruit crops, tangerine, plum, grape and pear and among vegetables, blue leaf mustard, cabbage, chicory, broccoli and others exhibited significant hypoglycemic effects by reducing ${\Delta}BGLs$ with significant ${\Delta}AUC$. The effective ${\Delta}AUC$ ranged from $5548.2{\pm}462.1$ to $3823.3{\pm}282.0mg-min{\cdot}dL^{-1}$. The TPC and AOA ranged from $0.063{\pm}0.00$ to $0.913{\pm}0.14mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ GAE and $01.05{\pm}0.08$ to $75.46{\pm}0.06%$, respectively. Overall, six fruits and fifteen vegetables exhibited higher TPC and one fruit and four vegetables exhibited higher AOA. There was a better correlation among TPC, AOA and ${\Delta}AUC$ of fruits and TPC & AOA of vegetables. We report that hypoglycemically significant fruits and vegetables investigated in this study have pharmacological importance which reduced ${\Delta}BGLs$ through insulin like activity and AOA in prevention of type-2 diabetes.
Demineralized bone particle (DBP) has been used as one of the powerful inducers of bone and cartilage tissue specialization. In this study, we fabricated DBP/PLGA scaffold for tissue engineered disc regeneration. We manufactured dual-structured scaffold to compose inner cylinder and outer doughnut similar to nature disc tissue. The DBP/PLGA scaffold was characterized by porosity, wettability, and water uptake ability. We isolated and cultured nucleus pulposus (NP) and annulus fibrosus (AF) cells from rabbit intervertebral disc. We seeded NP cells into the inner core of the hybrid scaffold and AF cells into the outer portion of it. Cellular viability and proliferation were assayed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl) -2,5- diphenyltetrazolium -bromide (MTT) test. PLGA and PLGA/DBP scaffolds were implanted in subcutaneous of athymic nude mouse to observe the formation of disc-like tissue in vivo. And then we observed change of morphology and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Formation of disc-like tissue was better DBP/PLGA hybrid scaffold than control. Specially, we confirmed that scaffold impregnated 20 and 40% DBP affected to proliferation of disc cell and formation of disc-like tissue.
The purpose of this study was to compare the microshear bond strength of a self-etching primer adhesive to dentin prepared with different diamond points, carbide burs and SiC papers, and also to determine which SiC paper yield similar strength to that of dentinal surface prepared with points or burs. Fifty-six human molar were sectioned to expose the occlusal dentinal surfaces of crowns and slabs of 1.2 mm thick were made. Dentinal surfaces were removed with three diamond points, two carbide burs, and three SiC papers. They were divided into one of eight equal groups (n = 7); Group 1: standard diamond point(TF-12), Group 2: fine diamond point (TF-12F), Group 3: extrafine diamond point (TF-12EF), Group 4: plain-cut carbide bur (no. 245), Group 5: cross-cut carbide bur (no. 557), Group 6 : P 120-grade SiC paper, Group 7: P 220-grade SiC paper, Group 8: P 800-grade SiC paper. Clearfil SE Bond was applied on dentinal surface and Clearfil AP-X was placed on dentinal surface using Tygon tubes. After the bonded specimens were subjected to uSBS testing, the mean uSBS (n = 20 for each group) was statistically compared using one-way ANOV A and Tukey HSD test. In conclusion, the use of extrafine diamond point is recommended for improved bonding of Clearfil SE Bond to dentin. Also the use of P 220-grade SiC paper in vitro will be yield the results closer to dentinal surface prepared with fine diamond point or carbide burs in vivo.
The purified antifungal substances produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens IUB158-03 was positive to ninhydrin but negative to aniline, suggesting that the antifungal substance could be a peptide. FAB-MS, UV adsorption spectrum, and amino acid composition analysis revealed that the molecular weight of the antifungal substance was 1042 and that maximal adsorption was at 220 nm and 277 nm. The antifungal substance was composed of $Asn_3$, $Gln_2$, $Ser_1$, $Gly_1$, and $Tyr_1$. The composition and structural characteristics of antifungal substance were analysed by $^1H$-NMR spectrum, $^1H$-COSY, HMQC, which revealed that the compound belongs to the iturin A family. Temperature and pH had little effect on the stability of the antifungal substance in the ranges of $-70{\sim}121^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0~10.0, respectively. It showed strong antibiotic activity against fungi. An in vitro cytotoxicity test using NIH3T3 cell showed that the antifungal substance does not have cytotoxicity. The number of circulating leukocytes and the hematobiological analysis of the mice administered with the antifungal substances was similar to those of the control group, indicating no cytotoxicity in vivo. Therefore, the antifungal substances extracted from culture broth of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens IUB158-03 have future potential as biocontrol agents against plant diseases caused by fungi.

In the present paper, the ultrasound blood images were measured at both the human radial artery(RA) and common carotid artery(CCA), depending on the age, and the pulsatility index of blood echogenicity(PIBE) was analyzed. In addition, the ultrasound blood images were measured at both RA and CCA of both the stroke patients and the control group, and PIBE was compared. PIBE of RA for the young group was similar with that for the old group ($0.13{\pm}0.11$ and $0.16{\pm}0.03$). PIBE of CCA for the young group, however, was larger than that for the old group ($0.70{\pm}0.21$ and $0.32{\pm}0.01$), and was more variable depending on the subject. Similarly, the fibrinogen concentrations of the patients ($336{\pm}61$ and $340{\pm}126mg/dl$) were more than that of the control group ($264{\pm}38$ and $257{\pm}43mg/dl$), for both RA and CCA. The results indicate the possibility of the ultrasonic test on the correlation between erythrocyte aggregation and stroke, and it is expected that the in-vivo EA measurement would be clinically useful.
