Idle NVH characteristics are one of the most important aspects among the vehicle performances. Vehicle developers are devoted to improve vehicle interior noise and steering wheel and seat vibrations. In order to improve the idle quality, noise and vibration transfer path should be carefully evaluated. Also, effects of various components related to the idle performance should be confirmed. A general procedure for improving the idle qualify is described in detail. The relationship among cylinder pressure characteristics, crankshaft rotational speed variation, and vehicle vibrations is also investigated. Influences of drive shaft, torque converter, air conditioning system, vehicle structure including engine mount system, and idle control parameters on the vehicle idle quality are studied. Weak points of typical vehicles on the idle qualify are identified. Some of improvement measures are proposed and verified.

Recently, several experimental techniques for identifying the noise sources distributed over a moving vehicle are being developed and used in order to design a low noise vehicle. The beamforming method, which uses phase information between several microphones to localize the source position, is proved to be one of the promising techniques applicable even under complicated test environments. In this study a beamforming algorithm is developed and applied to measure the dominant noise sources on a passenger car moving at constant speed. Unlike the acoustic signals from a stationary noise source, the sound generated from a moving source is distorted due to the Doppler effects. The sound pressure are measured with an spiral array system composed of 26 microphones and a pair of photo sensors are used to measure the. vehicle speed. The information about the speed and relative position of the vehicle are used to eliminate the Doppler effects from the measured pressure signal by using a de-Dopplerization algorithm. The noise generated from a moving vehicle can be grouped in many ways, however, tire noise and the noise generated from the engine are distinguishable at the speeds being tested.

High pressure hose having tuning cables, called 'Resonator hose' is frequently used to attenuate pressure ripple generated by the pump for reducing the vehicle interior noise. A number of studies have been conducted on the resonator hose and its analytical models. However, there are few studies which deal with the influence of resonator hose on vehicle interior noise because the most of studies focused on transmission loss of the resonator hose. This paper presents NVH test results of power steering system and frequency analysis results. In the frequency analysis, both the relations between vibration, pressure ripple and vehicle interior noise and also the design parameters of high pressure hose influencing on vehicle interior noise were discussed. The test was done for various high pressure hose specimens in full turn condition.

Interior noise, engine speed and vehicle speed are measured under road-load condition and interior noise signal is transformed by using the transient signal analysis methods such as the spectrogram and wavelet transform. Using the analyzed results, subjective noise criteria such as the loudness, noisiness and articulation index at each vehicle speed can be estimated and characteristics of interior noise for various running mode can be discussed in the viewpoint of noise quality.

The purpose of this study is to develop the models to predict the noise PCE (Passenger Car Equivalence) of large running vehicles through noise prediction models. The noises were measured at the distance of 7.5M, 11.0M, and 14.5M from the noise source with test vehicles running at the speed of 40 Km/h, 60 Km/h, and 80 Km/h while normal traffic were detoured. Total noise levels were measured while vehicles were running at given speeds, Engine noise level was considered as the noise of its idle running at the three vehicle speeds shown above friction noise level was ascertained by moving the vehicle at given speeds without the engin operating. The noise prediction models for each noise source were developed by factors which affect to the each noise level. As a result of this paper, the reduction of total vehicle noise by increasing the distance to the noise source from 10 M to 15 M is as much as that by dropping its speed from 60 Km/h to 40 Km/h. Also, the reduction of PCE of total noise of large vehicle by making the noise source to that by reducing its speed from 80 Km/h to 60 Km/h. Enging noise PCE, which is in range between 65 and 160, is larger than friction noise PCE which is in range 3.5 and 5.5. Engin noise is the main noise of the large vehicles while friction noise is that of the small vehicles. Machine noise for large vehicles, and engin noise for small vehicles should be tightly controlled to reduce the vehicle noise. A low noise engine and tire, and the shape of vehicle body are needed to be developed to reduce noise further.

Vibrations transmitted through rolling tire are major sources of road noise in vehicle interior on the range of $0{\sim}500Hz$. Among various road noises, tire cavity noise makes many problems recently. Vehicle NVH performance has improved better and road surfaces are made well. But tires are changed to high inches and low series. So tire cavity noise becomes more serious. In this paper, a designed material for reducing tire cavity noise is proposed. On the surface inside tire, this material is attached at one position using double-tape. This material disperses the pressure variations inside the tire. So a spindle forces at wheel center are reduced. And tire cavity noise at vehicle interior is also reduced. Durability is verified by tire only test and vehicle test. Noise performance also compared with peak levels after attaching this material.
Interior noise, engine speed and vehicle speed are measured under transient road-load condition and interior noise signal is transformed by using the transient signal analysis methods, such as the spectrogram and wavelet transform. Using the analyzed results, subjective noise metrics such as the loudness, sharpness and articulation index at each vehicle speed can be estimated and characteristics of interior noise for various running modes can be discussed in the viewpoint of noise quality.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to eliminate the noise of the vehicle after measuring the friction noise obtained from the NCPX (Noble Close ProXimity) method. The pure friction noise between the tire and road pavement could be determined from filtering the compositeness of sound and the influence of the vehicle noise. METHODS: The noise magnitude could be determined by analyzing the sound pressure level (SPL) and sound power level (PWL) along with the noise frequency of a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis as well as CPB (Constant Percentage Bandwidth) analysis. RESULTS: When the test for measuring the friction noise originated somewhere between tire and road pavement is performed with NCPX method, it must be fulfilled by attaching the surface microphone near the tire. In this condition, the surface microphone can measure the friction noise occurred at between tire and pavement, the chassis noise from the engine and power transfer units, the fluctuating aerodynamic noise, and the turbulence noise directly affected to the surface microphone. By using the NCPX method, the noise occurred at the vehicle must be eliminated for measuring the friction noise between tire and pavement from the traffic noise. CONCLUSIONS: The vehicle's testing engine noise depends on the vehicle and road types. The effect of vehicle's engine noise is less than the friction noise occurred at between tire and pavement at less than 1% effect.

Among various elements to affect customer's evaluation of vehicle quality, BSR(Buzz, Squeak, Rattle) are considered to be a mostly contributing factor. In this paper, we provide the test method which can be used to reduce the BSR noise of instrument panel in a vehicle. First, potential source regions of the instrument panel for BSR are localized by using the vibration-excitor and near-acoustic field visualization system. Then, subjective evaluation of BSR noise from the detected potential noise source regions is made with the Zwicker's loudness and time-varying loudness methods. This illustrative analysis reveals that current experimental methods can be used as a test procedure to systematically tackle BSR issues in early stage of the vehicle development cycle, which can result in the reduction of the production cost.
High-speed trains with the maximum speed of 300 km/h have started revenue services since April 2004. A large portion of the 'Kyung- Bu' line is comprised of tunnels or bridges, which may cause excessive noise in a vehicle. The vibration generated by the trains propagates into the structure of the tunnel and the vehicle and it can be radiated as noise inside the vehicle interior. This noise can usually be heard as low frequency structure-borne noise. Measurement of the noise and vibration inside the KTX vehicle confirmed that the noise comprises of frequencies below 250 Hz with a couple of broad peaks.
