  • This study was designed to verify reliability and feasibility by analyzing elderly drivers' ability test tools for older drivers aged 65 or older, which were improved in 2018 and are currently being conducted by the Korea Highway Traffic Authority. Only those aged 65 or older who voluntarily applied to the elderly driving ability evaluation system implemented by the Seoul branch of the Korea Highway Traffic Authority. The research was conducted for about 50 days until Aug. 31, 2018, starting with the registration and inspection of the first study subjects. The analysis performed a correlation analysis with existing tools and cognitive testing tools (MMSE_K) to determine their feasibility and reliability as an improved tool in 2018. As a result, the first, the speed distance, time-space memory, and dispersionism of each sub-component of the old version showed statistically significant static correlation with the sub-factor of the current version. Persistence, on the other hand, was not statistically significant to the current version. The limitations of this study were as follows. Most of the people in the study were highly educated and residents in the metropolitan area. Therefore, it is likely that the results of MSE_K, which checks cognitive and judgment skills, have been upgraded. Also, cognitive tools that are measured by computers are likely to have real measurement errors for generations who are not familiar with computers. Therefore, it is expected that improvement and development of tools for improving the limit points at the site and assessing actual operation capability will be required.

  • General-Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) build massively parallel architecture and apply multithreading technology to explore parallelism. By using programming models like CUDA, and OpenCL, GPGPUs are becoming the best in exploiting plentiful thread-level parallelism caused by parallel applications. Unfortunately, modern GPGPU cannot efficiently utilize its available hardware resources for numerous general-purpose applications. One of the primary reasons is the inefficiency of existing warp/thread block schedulers in hiding long latency instructions, resulting in lost opportunity to improve the performance. This paper studies the effects of hardware thread scheduling policy on GPGPU performance. We propose a novel warp scheduling policy that can alleviate the drawbacks of the traditional round-robin policy. The proposed warp scheduler first classifies the warps of a thread block into two groups, warps with long latency and warps with short latency and then schedules the warps with long latency before the warps with short latency. Furthermore, to support the proposed warp scheduler, we also propose a supplemental technique that can dynamically reduce the number of streaming multiprocessors to which will be assigned thread blocks when encountering a high contention degree at the memory and interconnection network. Based on our experiments on a 15-streaming multiprocessor GPGPU platform, the proposed warp scheduling policy provides an average IPC improvement of 7.5% over the baseline round-robin warp scheduling policy. This paper also shows that the GPGPU performance can be improved by approximately 8.9% on average when the two proposed techniques are combined.

  • Human beings in their perception of the objects perceive the overall characteristics first rather than any parts of the object. In the process of 'information structuralization' and 'information visualization', therefore, it is needed the methods of narrative information representation based on a relationship of cause and effect in order to express effectively the whole messages which designers want to deliver. In this study, according to the concept of narrative information representation, we reviewed the meanings of the visual storytelling. As a result, we found that the visual storytelling has the three key roles which are 'narrative', 'visual communication catalyst', 'interacting'. First, the narrative describes the information logistics flow and it has a role to provide a specific story into information in the process of users' information understanding. Second, in the information design, the visual story telling not only expresses the information structure(story) but also uses the visual expressions to deliver the specific message, which is called visual communication catalyst. Third, the information design goes through the information structuralization and the information visualization stages through the visual storytelling to provide the experience factors to the information users, which is called the interactivity. The research implication is to provide the basis developing an approach method which is able to convey information messages effectively by improving information users' visual cognition and raising information users' memory.

  • New calibration method for the near-field scanning (NFS) system is presented. The proposed calibration method consisted of a new near-field antenna (NFP) and newly devised patterns as circular patch patterns (CPPs) and meander patterns (MPs). The proposed patterns were used for improving spatial resolutions and simplifying a calibration procedure of the NFP compared to the conventional method defined in the IEC61967-3 and 6. Also, the effect of the length of NFPs on attenuation characteristics was investigated with length of 8mm and 30mm. For them, we designed and fabricated CPPs of diameter (D) = 20, 40, 60, and 100mm and MPs of various widths and spaces. We found the reverse relations between spatial resolutions and heights of measuring points by using simplified calibration procedure. The testing result shows that the spatial resolution of $120{\mu}m$ at height of $200{\mu}m$ was verified without complex correlation algorithms under 8GHz. For manufacturing cost all patterns and the NFP were realized with low-cost fabrication using PCB (FR-4) not by a conventional LTCC process. For verification of chip-level EMC from the results, near-field scanning system (NFSS) having step resolution of Sub-micron scale was produced and by using the proposed NFSS and proposed NFP measurement of chip shows accurately the shape of the resolution of $200{\mu}m$ patterns for securing a high level of chip-level EMC verification.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fermented Laminaria japonica (FL), a type sea tangle used as a functional food ingredient, has been reported to possess cognitive improving properties that may aid in the treatment of common neurodegenerative disorders, such as dementia. MATERIALS/METHODS: We examined the effects of FL on scopolamine (Sco)- and ethanol (EtOH)-induced hippocampus-dependent memory impairment, using the Passive avoidance (PA) and Morris water maze (MWM) tests. To examine the underlying mechanisms associated with neuroprotective effects, we analyzed acetylcholine (ACh) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, brain tissue expression of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR), cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2), and immunohistochemical analysis, in the hippocampus of mice, compared to current drug therapy intervention. Biochemical blood analysis was carried out to determine the effects of FL on alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) levels. 7 groups (n = 10) consisted of a control (CON), 3 Sco-induced dementia and 3 EtOH-induced dementia groups, with both dementia group types containing an untreated group (Sco and EtOH); a positive control, orally administered donepezil (Dpz) (4mg/kg) (Sco + Dpz and EtOH + Dpz); and an FL (50 mg/kg) treatment group (Sco + FL50 and EtOH + FL50), orally administered over the 4-week experimental period. RESULTS: FL50 significantly reduced EtOH-induced increase in AST and ALT levels. FL50 treatment reduced EtOH-impaired step-through latency time in the PA test, and Sco- and EtOH-induced dementia escape latency times in the MWM test. Moreover, anticholinergic effects of Sco and EtOH on the brain were reversed by FL50, through the attenuation of AChE activity and elevation of ACh concentration. FL50 elevated ERK1/2 protein expression and increased p-CREB (ser133) in hippocampus brain tissue, according to Western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis, respectively. CONCLUSION: Overall, these results suggest that FL may be considered an efficacious intervention for Sco- and EtOH-induced dementia, in terms of reversing cognitive impairment and neuroplastic dysfunction.

  • Fuzzy control is widely used for improving temperature control performance as controlling ventilation in greenhouse because the technique can respond more flexibly to the outside air temperature and wind speed. By pre-studied PID and normal fuzzy control this study was performed to obtain the fundamental data that can be established in better greenhouse ventilation control method. The temperature control error by the simple fuzzy control was $1.2^{\circ}C$. The accumulated operating size of the window and the number of operating were 84% and 13, respectively. These showed equivalent control performance with pre-studied result that control error. The accumulated operating size of the window and the number of operating were 75% and 12, respectively. The proposed fuzzy technique was simple control logic method compared with step and PID control methods, but it showed equivalent performance. Therefore, the proposed simple fuzzy control method could be used in micro controller of small programmable memory size and many applications.

  • Even though the multiple pages TLB are effective in improving the performance, a conventional method with OS support cannot utilize multiple page sizes in user application. Thus, we propose a new multiple-TLB structure supporting multiple page sizes for high performance and low power consumption without any operating system support. The proposed TLB is organised as two parts of a S-TLB(Small TLB) with a small page size and a L-TLB(Large TLB) with a large page size. Both are designed as fully associative bank structures. The S-TLB stores small pages are evicted from the L-TLB, and the L-TLB stores large pages including a small page generated by the CPU. Each one bank module of S-TLB and L-TLB can be selectively accessed base on particular one and two bits of the virtual address generated from CPU, respectively. Energy savings are achieved by reducing the number of entries accessed at a time. Also, this paper proposed the simple 1-bit LRU policy to improve the performance. The proposed LRU policy can present recently referenced block by using an additional one bit of each entry on TLBs. This method can simply select a least recently used page from the L-TLB. According to the simulation results, the proposed TLB can reduce Energy * Delay by about 76%, 57%, and 6% compared with a fully associative TLB, a ARM TLB, and a Dual TLB, respectively.

  • Recently, CPU-GPU integrated heterogeneous multicore processors have been widely used for improving the performance of computing systems. Heterogeneous multicore processors integrate CPUs and GPUs on a single chip where CPUs and GPUs share the LLC(Last Level Cache). This causes a serious cache contention problem inside the processor, resulting in significant performance degradation. In this paper, we propose the partitioned LLC architecture to solve the cache contention problem in heterogeneous multicore processors. We analyze the performance impact varying the LLC size of CPUs and GPUs, respectively. According to our simulation results, the bigger the LLC size of the CPU, the CPU performance improves by up to 21%. However, the GPU shows negligible performance difference when the assigned LLC size increases. In other words, the GPU is less likely to lose the performance when the LLC size decreases. Because the performance degradation due to the LLC size reduction in GPU is much smaller than the performance improvement due to the increase of the LLC size of the CPU, the overall performance of heterogeneous multicore processors is expected to be improved by applying partitioned LLC to CPUs and GPUs. In addition, if we develop a memory management technique that can maximize the performance of each core in the future, we can greatly improve the performance of heterogeneous multicore processors.

  • The Empathy for Dementia using Virtual Reality (EDuVR) system, developed by the Jeju Provincial Dementia Center, is a 3D video system capturing the experience of dementia in a first-person perspective using 360 degree vritual reality (VR) technology. It was developed to create a greater understanding of dementia and to help people empathize with individuals with dementia through an immersive VR experience. The EDuVR shows how a dementia patient has impairments in memory, orientation, language, judgment and problem solving, as well as problems with activities of daily living. The present study reported the effectiveness of the EDuVR experience in changing public awareness of, and attitude toward, dementia. Sixty-six participants were assigned to the EDuVR (n = 34) or the conventional education (n = 32) groups, and two types of questionnaires - attitude and awareness questionnaires - were administered to the subjects before and after the EDuVR experience or education. The simulator sickness and presence questionnaires were administered to the EDuVR group to assess cybersickness and presence of the VR experience. As a results, the attitude and awareness toward dementia patients changed positively in both the EDuVR and the conventional education groups, and these changes did not differ between two groups. Only one person reported a significant level of cybersicness after experiencing the EDuVR system. These results suggest that the EDuVR enhances the level of understanding and empathy for dementia and would be a useful tool for improving awareness in the general public.

  • This study explores how an elementary school homeroom teacher who continued to lecture, can use diversified science teaching methods for learner-centered instruction. Using an auto-ethnographic approach over the course of a year, self-memory data, facebook diaries, class diaries, and interview data of an elementary teacher's day-to-day preparations and practice of elementary science, in the context of a Korean elementary school, were collected. The data was analyzed through cultural historical activity theory, examining how the interplay of key elements (i.e., the subject as a homeroom teacher with instructional expertise, norms, community, division of labor, tools, and goals) was characterized within and across distinct two-activity systems, and how these elements shaped the teacher's teaching methods into either lecture format or diversified teaching. The study revealed that a non-cooperative community, lack of division of labor, and norms that neglect preparation for science class were the elements that perpetuated the lecture format, and that a contradiction between goals and tools occurred in the activity system. However, these elements were able to be transformed into a cooperative community, shared labor, and norms that saved preparation time for both science class and diversified teaching methods, and those changed elements facilitated the teacher in using diversified teaching methods (e.g., experiments, subject-integrated classes, field work), thereby mitigating the contradiction. This study also discusses that diversified teaching methods can be facilitated when dealing with norms, community, and division of labor elements in an elementary school context as well as improving individual teachers' instructional expertise.
