Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. The laboratory model tests were carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. Though which the characteristics of gravel are compared to those of sand for engineering purpose. Two cylindrical containers for the model test were filled with marine clayey soil from the west coast of Korea with a column in the center, one with sand, the other with gravel. Vibrating wire type piezometers were installed at the distance of 1.0D, 1.5D and 2.0D from the center of the column. The characteristics of consolidation were studied with data obtained from the measuring instrument place on the surface of the container. The parameter study was performed on the marine clayey soil before and after the test in order to verify the effectiveness of the improvement. The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. In-situ tests area was divided into two areas by material used. One is Sand Drain(SD) and Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) area, the other is Gravel Drain(GD) and Gravel Compaction Pile(GCP) area. Both areas were monitored to obtain the information on settlement, pore water pressure and bearing capacity by measuring instruments for stage loading caused by embankment. The results of measurements were analyzed. According to the test results, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. It is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel is considered to be a better material than sand for bearing capacity, and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as a gravel compaction pile than as a gravel drain.

Because effect of value elevation is great as it is fast that construction VE is enforcement, VE at the design phase is more and more important more than construction process phase. But, is exerting negative impact for construction process phase by various problem that happen at design phase, and is causing discord to between project partners. Therefore, quality security in design phase is important first of all. Hereupon, this study emphasized that need VE at the design phase of extension plan forward more and more because achieved process that derive conceptional estimation by quantitative value calculating value index (V) through provision of design function point (F) and LCC expense (C) by comparison method of construction and chooses optimum method of construction through VE/LCC analysis example in improvement of soft soil ground method choice process of design phase.
With the advantages of high permeability and strength, pervious concrete piles can be suitable for ground improvement with high water content and low bearing capacity. By comparing the strength and permeability of pervious concrete with different aggregate sizes (3-5 mm and 4-6 mm) and porosities (20%, 25%, 30% and 35%), the recommended aggregate size (3-5 mm) and porosity (30%) can be achieved. The model tests of the pervious concrete piles in soft soil (silt and clay) foundations were conducted to evaluate the bearing characteristics, results show that, for the higher consolidation efficiency of the silty foundation, the bearing capacity of the silty foundation is 16% higher, and the pile-soil stress ratio is smaller. But when it is the ultimate load for the piles, they will penetrate into the underlying layer, which reduces the pile-soil stress ratios. With higher skin friction of the pile in the silty foundation, the pile penetration is smaller, so the decrease of the pile axial force can be less. For the difference in consolidation efficiency, the skin friction of pile in silt is more affected by the effective stress of soil, while the skin friction of pile in clay is more affected by the lateral stress. When the load reaches 4400 N, the skin friction of the pile in the silty foundation is about 35% higher than that of the clay foundation.
Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) is a soft-ground improvement technique used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of soils. In this study, laboratory tests and 3-D finite element analysis were peformed to investigate the characteristics of load transfer in SCP with an emphasis on free-strain behavior of piles with low replacement ratios in the range of 30 to $50\%$. Through these focused tests and numerical analyses, we proposed a simplified method to analyze the load transfer characteristics of SCP in soft ground. Moreover, it was shown that estimated normal stresses in SCP using the proposed method were in a reasonable agreement with actual values.
Earth reinforcement by using geogrids as reinforcing materials are widely applied to several earth structures. The bearing capacity of geogrid reinforced foundation soils is usually examined on based on the rigid plasticity theory or Limit Equilibrium Method. Method of analysis such Limit Equilibrium Method provide no detail information about failure behaviour or strain which develop in the reinforcement or foundation. In this paper the analysis of failure behaviour of strip footing on geogrid-reinforced sand over a soft caly was investigated by using a numerical method. A series of finite element analyses were performed on a geogrid-reinforced strip footing over a soft clay including number of geogrid layers, length, depth. We effectively investigated the failure behaviour and improvement of bearing capacity on the reinforced foundation soil by using FEM program.

This paper reports a case study of dynamic consolidation. The objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of ground improvement at the site for Hyundai Petrochemical Compound constructed at Daesan-Myeon, Seosan-Gun in the western shores of Korea. The site ground was prepared by filling on the existing soft marine deposit which consists of a loose granular soil layer and a medium stiff clay layer. For the stabilization of site ground, the compaction was executed in three different procedures with same pounder weigh, drop height and imprint spacing. The post investigation showed that the object was successfully achieved indicating a significant increase of bearing capacity of the treated ground. In this study the effectiveness of dynamic consolidation is evluated for various factors the applied energy, temping sequences, the radial distance from the imprint location and the depth of bed rock.

In this study, the ground settlement was investigated by using monitoring data of the test sites where vacuum consolidation method and surcharge method were applied for improving deep soft soil. The monitoring data are chosen in ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ area port construction site reclaimed with very soft dredged clay. These data are analyzed to compare the consolidation characteristics between the different loading methods for soil improvement. Through analysis of the loading time, it is shown that the ground settlement reaches its allowable value under vacuum consolidation loading by about 45% faster than that of the surcharge loading consolidation. This could be explained that vacuum consolidation method makes the isotropic consolidation condition so that the time for reaching a certain final preloading without soil failure can be shortened.
The conventional single-core PBDs have been widely used in order to accelerate consolidation settlement of soft grounds. When using the single-core PBD in a thick clay deposit, a delay of consolidation may occur due to high confining pressure in the thick deposit and necking of drains. This study is to compare the performances of soil improvement by the single-core and double-core PBD installed at a site in Busan New Port which exhibits approximately a 40m-thick clay layer. An in-situ test program was performed at the test site where a set of the double-core PBDs and single-core PBDs were installed to compare the efficiency of each drain. In addition, the discharge capacity of each PBD has been measured using the modified Delft Test. A series of laboratory tests for estimating in-situ soil properties have also been performed in order to obtain input parameters for a numerical program ILLICON. The discharge capacity of the double-core PBD is higher than that of the single-core PBD in the modified Delft Test. However it is observed from the comparative in-situ test and numerical analysis that there is no difference in the performance of ground improvement between the two drain systems. This discrepancy comes from the fact that the amount of water released during consolidation in most common field conditions is much smaller than the capacity of even the single core PBD. And thus, considering actual field conditions, it can be concluded that the single-core PBD has enough discharge capacity even in the thick clay deposit such as this test site.

As a special concrete, which is a mixture of soil, cement and water, has strength like regular concrete for pavement, soil cement has been used in various field such as pavement and soft soil improvement. The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristic of unconfined compressive strength and time dependent behavior of soil cement that is made from decomposed granite soil or coluvial and inorganic solidification liquid. The results showed that the unconfined compressive strength appears to increase as the amount of cement and curing time increase In addition, the strength seems to decrease with increase of the potion of fine particles(No 200 sieve). The result of XRD indicated that there is Vermiculite, the product of reaction, in the soil cement. The dynamic properties of material, such as shear complex compliance, shear complex modulus, and phase angle could be calculated from the hysteresis loop obtained from the Haversine Creep Tests. Finally, creep behavior was able to be predicted from these dynamic properties.
