  • This paper describes a new detecting method of initial rotor position for PMSM without a position sensors. The proposed method uses the fact that the back-EMF is differently generated according to tile initial rotor position of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). The voltage with short duty is impressed to each phase at standstill. Then, we can detect the rotor position by comparing the amplitudes and signs of three phase current each other. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed method.

  • With increasing corrosion in RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures, cracks occurred due to corrosion products and bearing load resistance decreased. In this study, corrosion was induced through an accelerated corrosion test (ICM: Impressed Current Method) with 140 hours of duration, and changes in USV (Ultra-Sonic Velocity), flexural failure load, and corrosion weight were evaluated before and after corrosion test. Three levels of cover depth (20 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm) were considered, and the initial cracking period increased and the rust around steel decreased with increasing cover depth. In addition, the USV linearly decreased with decreasing cover depth and increasing amount of corrosion. In the flexural loading test, the bending capacity decreased by more than 10% due to corrosion, but a clear correlation could not be obtained since the corrosion ratio was small, so that the effect of slip was greater than that of reduced cross-sectional area of steel due to corrosion. As cover depth increased, the produced corrosion amount and USV changed with a clear linear relationship, and the cracking period due to corrosion could be estimated by the gradient of the measured corrosion current.

  • Rebar corrosion in concrete containing both chloride ions and calcium nitrite inhibitors were investigated by the various electrochemical methods. Rebar corrosion was accelerated by applying the impressed current to the rebar in concrete. Effect of chloride content and inhibitors on rebar corrosion were evaluated. Accelerated corrosion technique is the method to measure the time to the initiation of cracks of reinforced concretes, by applying constant voltage between rebar and the stainless steel cathedes. The increase of concentration of chloride ions in concrete result in the increase in anodic currents and the reduction of time to crack. However addition of inhibitors did not improve corrosion resistance of rebar in concrete. Rebar corrosion in concrete with chloride ions and inhibitors was also analyzed by the immersed tests though the mesurement of corrosion potentials.

  • In this study, electro-deposition method was applied to heal cracks in various blended concrete. The performance of the method was indirectly monitored by measuring impressed voltage, electrolyte, galvanic current monitoring, linear polarization resistance, and directly by image analysis of the cracks. The indirect and direct monitoring values are compared to develop guidelines for relating the indirect measures to actual crack healing. As a result, It was found that impressed voltage was convergence to 2.9V after 20000 minutes. From the galvanic current test results of artificial crack healing, the corrosion resistance showed that the order of 0.4 $>$ 0.6 $>$ 0.5 water to cement ratio. Furthermore, in view of binder, the corrosion resistance order was calculated OPC $>$ 60%GGBS $>$ 10%SF $>$ 30%PFA. Finally, It was found that 76.47% of healed crack surface calculated from the artificial crack healing technique using electrochemical deposition method.

  • PSC (Prestressed Concrete) structures have been used widely for its engineering advantage with using total concrete area as effective compressive section. However tendon inside is exposed to such a high tensile stress that and more attentions should be paid for corrosion control. This work is for changing corrosion current and ultimate strength in tendon with increasing prestressing force in a constant corrosive condition. With increasing prestressing force, corrosion current, corrosion amount, and ultimate load are changed linearly. When prestressing force increases from 20.0 % to 40.0 %, corrosion current increases to 124.4 % and 168.0 % and ultimate load decreases to 87.8 % and 78.4 %, respectively. With inducing constant electrical potential, increasing corrosion current and reduction of strength are evaluated to be linearly related with increasing prestressing load.

  • Due to industrialization and urbanization, underground metallic utilities with different owners have been rapidly increased and cathodic protection (CP) methods, especially impressed current CP systems, have been widely adopted to protect their utilities from corrosion with expanded recognition of this method. The stray current interference problem as well as the difficulty in spatial security for system installation, however, came to a ramification of which each owner couldn't resolve for himself. In this respect, this paper illustrates a field-diagnosed example for mutual interference due to separately operated CP systems and suggests an alternative method to overcome the interference situation by design and field-assessment of a common anode bed cathodic protection system.

  • Recently long-span bridges, such as Kwang-Ahn Grand bridge, Seo-Hae Grand Bridge, Young-Jong Grand Bridge, etc, have been designed and constructed near the shore. It needs to maintain the durability of marine concrete structures which are exposed to severe chloride environments. It is well known that corrosion of reinforcement steels in concrete structure is the most important cause for the durability of concrete structure which can be controlled by systematic preparatory corrosion protection works for economic and safe infrastructures. Various corrosion protection systems have been used for the corrosion protection of reinforcement steels from detrimental chemical components such as chloride, sulphate and etc. Since chloride can be penetrated into concrete in a variety way, an effective method has to be adopted by taking into full economical aspects and technical data of each protection system. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in laboratory concrete specimens which are exposed to cyclic wet and dry saltwater, and then to develop pertinent corrosion protection system, such as corrosion inhibitors and cathodic protection for reinforced concrete bridges exposed to chloride environment. Resistance of various corrosion inhibitors and impressed current system have been experimentally evaluated under severe environmental conditions, and thus effective corrosion protection systems could have been Practically developed for future concrete construction.

  • Many protection methods such as surface coating, electric protection, or other methods have been applied to the numerous steel structures widely used in continental and marine areas to control their corrosion, which is done from an economic point of view. Most of these steel structures are primarily protected by coating methods. However, some steel piles under seawater are protected by the electric protection method, that is, either using an impressed current or a sacrificial anode method. Furthermore, environmental contamination may cause a severely corrosive environment, which, in turn, causes the accelerated corrosion of steel structures. Subsequently, coated steel structures could deteriorate more rapidly than the designed lifetime because of the acid rain caused by air pollution, etc. Therefore, a coating of marine paint exposed to seawater, that is, underwater hardening painting, is increasingly required to be fast drying as well as highly corrosion resistant. In this study, five types of underwater hardening paints were prepared with different resin series and additives. Their corrosion and water resistances were investigated using electrochemical methods such as corrosion potential, polarization curves, impedance and cyclic voltammogram measurements, etc. Even though it is generally accepted that the corrosion resistance of bare steel tends to increase with a shift of the corrosion potential in the noble direction, the corrosion resistance of a sample with a coating exhibited a relatively better tendency when it had a lower corrosion potential in this study. The corrosion current density was also decreased with a decrease in the diffusion limiting current density, which may mean that there is some relationship between corrosion and water resistance. The S sample of the ceramic resin series showed the relatively best corrosion and water resistance among those of samples, while the worst corrosion and water resistance were observed for the R sample of the epoxy resin series. The corrosion and water resistance of those samples tended to deteriorate with an increase in the immersion days, and their corrosion and water resistances were considered to be apparently improved by the types of resin and additives.

  • Recently, for the purpose of preventing the corrosion of a vessel, the electrical corrosion protection device that prevents the corrosions of the hull and the propeller is widely used. However, the electrical corrosion protection method artificially emits the current into the seawater around the hull using the power supply in order to make the hull and propeller be in the state of not being corrosion, so that electromagnetic field is generated outside the hull by the current emitted into the seawater. In this paper, the static and alternating constituents of the electromagnetic field generated in underwater outside the hull are analyzed and a countermeasure is investigated to reduce the strength of the electromagnetic field. In conventional shaft grounding system, the shaft potential is maintained above at least 100mV and the alternating current component constitutes more than 10% of the total current. However, in this paper, a control system was designed in order that the alternating current component and the shaft potential which generate electromagnetic field are maintained within 1% and 2mV respectively, and the performance was verified by simulation.

  • HCP(Half Cell Potential) method has been widely used since it is recognized as a efficient NDT(Non Destructive Technique) for corrosion detection. This work is for an evaluation of relation between corrosion amount and measured HCP in dried condition through ICM(Impressed Current Method) for accelerating corrosion. For the work, cement mortar specimens with three w/c ratios and four cover depths are prepared, and corrosion test based on ICM is performed for 6 hours, 18 hour, and 42 hours with constant 20V of electrical charge, respectively. From the test, corrosion amount increases with reduced cover depth, increasing w/c ratio, and extended corrosion period, where corrosion amount is evaluated to linearly increases with measured HCP in dried condition. In order to evaluate corrosion amount through measured HCP, the measured HCP level is firstly determined and then corrosion amount is to be compared with measured HCP, which is evaluated to be more reasonable with higher C.O.V.
