  • In Korea, the demand for water is increasing greatly due to Korea's raqid economic progress which is similar to Japan's. A correct estimation of the runoff factors is the question that must be settled first to establish the appropritae plans for water use and water resources. of these plans the estimation of catchment evapotranspiration for every river basin is the subject of the most importance. It is impossible theoretically to measure evapotranspiration directly, because it is an at mospheric translatory phenomenon. Many approaches have been devised to estimate evapotranspiration, but each of these methods estimates from information taken from a specified point, and these methods are considered incomplete for estimating catchment evapotranspiration. In this paper, the seasonal evapotranspiration estimating method that was proposed by Linsly and was applied in the Kamigamo exprimental basin (subjected to Kyoto Univ.) by Takase et al, was used for the Geum river which is the main river in Korea. Conclusion of experiment. 1) The average annual Ec in this river basin from 1966 to 1972 was 470mm. That is considered appropriate since the average value for the six other large river basin in korea was 485mm. 2) The Ec/Ep and Ec/Epm ratios were 0.43 and 0.52, respectively (Ec : estimated evapotranspiration by water balance method, Ep : average pan evaporation, Epm : evaporation by Penman method). The seasonal Ec/Ep ratios were : 0.4 in spring, 0.6 in summer, 0.4 in autumn and 0.2 in winter. These are rather small when compared to Japan's or England's. 3) The reason for this was that the precipitational difference in wet and dry seasons were greater, an there was not sufficient soil moisture harmonize with the evapotranspiration capacity in the dry season, and that evapotranspiration was small due to the numerous barren mountains.

  • Abstract. Image segmentation is always a challenging task in computer vision as well as in pattern recognition. Nowadays, this method has great importance in the field of stereo vision. The disparity information extracting from the binocular image pairs has essential relevance in the fields like Stereoscopic (3D) Imaging Systems, Virtual Reality and 3D Graphics. The term 'disparity' represents the horizontal shift between left camera image and right camera image. Till now, many methods are proposed to visualize or estimate the disparity. In this paper, we present a new technique to visualize the horizontal disparity between two stereo images based on image segmentation method. The process of comparing left camera image with right camera image is popularly known as 'Stereo-Matching'. This method is used in the field of stereo vision for many years and it has large contribution in generating depth and disparity maps. Correlation based stereo-matching are used most of the times to visualize the disparity. Although, for few stereo image pairs it is easy to estimate the horizontal disparity but in case of some other stereo images it becomes quite difficult to distinguish the disparity. Therefore, in order to visualize the horizontal disparity between any stereo image pairs in more robust way, a novel stereo-matching algorithm is proposed which is named as "Quadtree Segmentation of Pixels Disparity Estimation (QSPDE)".

  • To reduce the outage probability and to increase the transmission capacity, the importance of repeaters in cellular systems keeps increasing. Unlike optical repeaters which require wireline connections, RF repeaters are easy to install, have low limitations in location and also have a reduced operational expense such as the optical fiber maintenance cost. On the other hand, RF repeaters suffer the interference due to the feedback signals between the transmitter and receiver antennas, hence require an extra interference cancellation method when the amount of the feedback signal reduction by using the shielding is not sufficient. In this paper, a channel estimation method for two-path feedback interference signals in the ICS (Interference Cancellation System) repeaters using baseband signal processing is proposed and its performance is evaluated. When compared with the conventional method which estimates each multipath individually, the proposed method achieves 10 dB performance gain in terms of the normalized mean-squared-error.

  • Air-water interfacial area is of great importance for the analysis of contaminant mass transfer processes occurring in the soil systems. Capillary bundle model has been proposed to estimate the specific air-water interfacial areas in unsaturated soils. In this study, the measured air-water interfacial areas of a soil (loam) using the gaseous interfacial tracer technique were compared to those from capillary bundle model. The measured values converged to the specific solid surface area (7.6×104 ㎠/㎤) of the soil. However, the simulated air-water interfacial areas based on the capillary bundle model deviated significantly from those measured. The simulated values were substantially over-estimated at low end of the water content range, whereas the model under-estimated the air-water interfacial area for the most of the water content range. This under-estimation is considered to be caused by the nature of the capillary bundle model that replaces the soil pores with a bundle of glass capillaries and thus no surface roughness at the inner surface of the capillaries is taken into account for the estimation of the air-water interfacial area with the capillary bundle model. Subsequently, appropriate correction is necessary for the capillary bundle model to estimate the air-water interfacial area in soils. Since the soil-moisture release curve data is the basis of the capillary bundle model, the model can be of use due to its simplicity, while the gaseous tracer technique requires complicated experimental equipment followed by moment analysis of the breakthrough curves. The size distribution profile of the pores filled with gas estimated by the water retention curve was found to be similar to that of particle size at different size range. The shifted distribution of gas-filled pores toward smaller size side compared to the particle size distribution was also found.

  • Purpose - Recent international studies have largely focused on measuring the welfare gains from increased trade varieties. To adequately capture the variety gains, it is of importance to estimate the elasticity of substitution between varieties of trade goods because it is one of the key parameters to determine the magnitude of the variety gains. Using the import data of South Korea, this paper shows that the elasticities vary substantially across the estimators, which affects the magnitude of the gains from trade. Design/methodology - Empirical studies working on the gains from trade variety have heavily depended on the estimation methods for the elasticity of substitution between trade varieties, developed by Feenstra (1994) and refined by Broda and Weinstein (2006). We estimate and compare the estimated elasticities for 8,945 HS 10 goods of South Korea, obtained from the three estimation methods: Feenstra's weighted least square (F-WLS), Feenstra's feasible generalized least square (F-FGLS), and Broda and Weinstein's feasible generalized least square (BW-FGLS). Findings - Using the estimated elasticities from the F-FGLS, considered as a suitable estimator, A typical Korean consumer saved 228 dollars per year by the greater access to new import varieties. This leads to gains from imported variety of 2.06% of GDP. In 2017, a typical Korean consumer would gain by 611 dollars, compared with 2000. China is the country with the largest contribution (28.4%), followed by Japan and USA. About 50% of all the welfare gains come from the imports from the three main trade partners. The Southern Asian countries are more important to the South Korean welfare gain than the Western European countries. Originality/value - Existing studies have chosen one of the methods without any criterion for the choice and then estimated the elasticities of substitution between varieties of trade goods. This paper focuses on the estimation specifications and methods as the cause of the disparity in estimated elasticities and welfare gains from trade variety. According to the Ramsey RESET and White tests, the F-FGLS estimates are relatively better compared to the F-WLS and BW-FGLS estimates. As another contribution, this paper provides the first measure of the welfare gains from trade variety for South Korea, using the estimated elasticities of substitution between trade varieties.

  • Carbon emissions and storages that are strongly related to global warming has have emerged as one of the important issues while many governments and researchers have been interested in climate change and pollution. In this regards, forest biomass estimation is quite importance since forest biomass works as an important medium of the global carbon cycle between the atmosphere and soil. Forest biomass estimation through field survey needs lots of time and labors, and has accessibility issues. Hence, many researchers have focused on the forest biomass approaches based on remotely sensed data. This research comprehensively reviewed forty one international studies using remote sensing data according to five different categories (i.e., location of study area, size of study area, biome, used remote sensing data, and estimation technology). It would be expected that the results of this study can be used for suggesting domestic research directions; domestic research in this field is at the beginning stage in terms of level of technologies and useful materials. As results, 39% out of the reviewed studies used the areas located in North America. 59% out of the researches dealt with small size of the study areas (less than 3,600km2). In case of biome, around 30% of the studies focused on the boreal/taiga areas. Moreover, 35% and 16% of the studies were carried out using Landsat series and Lidar data, respectively. Finally, regression analysis method was most frequently used for forest biomass estimation by 71% out of 41 studies.

  • Because the estimated cost at early stage has great influence on decisions of project owner, the importance of early cost estimation is increasing. However, it depends on experience and knowledge of the estimator mainly due to shortage of information. Those tendency developed into case-based reasoning(CBR) method which solves new problems by adapting previous solution to similar past problems. The performance of CBR model is affected by attribute weight, so that its accurate determination is necessary. Previous research utilizes mathematical method or subjective judgement of estimator. In order to improve the problem of previous research, this suggests CBR schematic cost estimation method using genetic algorithm to determine attribute weight. The cost model employs nearest neighbor retrieval for selecting past case. And it estimates the cost of new cases based on cost information of extracted cases. As the result of validation for 17 testing cases, 3.57% of error rate is calculated. This rate is superior to accuracy rate proposed by AACE and the method to determine attribute weight using multiple regression analysis and feature counting. The CBR cost estimation method improve the accuracy by introducing genetic algorithm for attribute weight. Moreover, this makes user understand the problem-solving process easier than other artificial intelligence method, and find solution within short time through case retrieval algorithm.

  • With video compression standards such as MPEG-4, a transmission error happens in a video-packet basis, rather than in a macroblock basis. In this context, we propose a semantic error prioritization method that determines the size of a video packet based on the importance of its contents. A video packet length is made to be short for an important area such as a facial area in order to reduce the possibility of error accumulation. To facilitate the semantic error prioritization, an efficient hardware algorithm for face tracking is proposed. The increase of hardware complexity is minimal because a motion estimation engine is efficiently re-used for face tracking. Experimental results demonstrate that the facial area is well protected with the proposed scheme.

  • Seismic performance evaluation systems require rational classification of structure systems, proper evaluation criteria, and their scoring index for synthesis. Current seismic performance systems need expert judgments based on collection of available data, approximate analysis of important items, and various scoring system. This study presents a three-step seismic performance evaluation system for building structures in Korea. Each evaluation step determines the seismic performance and the method depends on the degree of refinement of analysis. The preliminary step evaluation involves the global attributes of structures such as vertical irregularity, asymmetric plan, redundancy, and age of structures. The second step requires an elastic analysis for estimation of forces acting on critical sections and checks the strength and ductility. The final step requires inelastic capacity of structures. Each stephas own evaluation scheme with proper weighing factor dependent on the importance and consequence. This study applies the fuzzy theory to a scoring method that synthesizes the individual quantity to a representative value.

  • Recently, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approaches employing Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) have shown good results. However, due to the usage of the accurate sensors, distinct particles which compensate one another are attenuated as the RBPF-SLAM continues. To avoid this particle depletion, we propose the strategic games to assign the particle's payoff which replaces the importance weight in the current RBPF-SLAM framework. From simulation works, we show that RBPF-SLAM with the strategic games is inconsistent in the pessimistic way, which is different from the existing optimistic RBPF-SLAM. In addition, first, the estimation errors with applying the strategic games are much less than those of the standard RBPF-SLAM, and second, the particle depletion is alleviated.
