  • The Analysis of spray characteristics for combined spray group are necessary to develop large rocket engine. In this study, basic effects of interaction from spray fan formed by impinging jets were investigated with respect to mass distribution, droplet velocities and diameter. Patternater and PDPA are used for experimental apparatus. Water was used as a test fluid When momentum ratio is 1, effect of interaction from collision of spray fan on mass distribution are small. Also, effect of interaction from collision of spray fan on droplet velocities and diameter are small. But, droplet diameter is smaller near collision point due to second collision. Therefor, for the same momentum ratio from spray fan formed by impinging jets, we may neglect effect of interaction on mass distribution, droplet velocities and diameter.

  • Mixing process of impinging jets of liquid oxidizer and liquid fuel is simulated by using water and sodium carbonate (Na$_{2}$CO$_{3}$) solution. The shapes of liquid sheets are visualized and flowrate distributions are measured by collecting droplets using measuring cells. Mixing charateristics are studied by using acid-base titration. Stable liquid sheets are formed and two liquid jets are well mixed for symmetric impinging jets. Similarity in flowrate distribution for various measuring heights is observed. For asymmetric impinging jets, liquid sheets become unstable as the difference in the velocities of jets increases. In some extreme cases, liquid sheets are not formed and the jets are separated. Dimensionless variables are adopted demonstrating similarly in flowrate distribution. Mixing characteristics vary significantly with experiment conditions.

  • Effects of collision angle on heat transfer characteristics of a liquid droplet impinging on a heated wall above the Leidenfrost point temperature were experimentally investigated. The heated wall and droplet temperatures were $506^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the impact angle varied from $20^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ while the normal collision velocity was constant at 0.27 m/s. The droplet collision behaviors and the surface temperature distribution were measured using synchronized high-speed video and infrared cameras. The major physical parameters influencing upon droplet-wall collision heat transfer, such as residence time, wall heat flux, effective heat transfer area, heat transfer amount, were analyzed. It was found at the constant normal collision velocity that the residence time, wall heat flux and effective heat transfer area were hardly not changed, resulting in the almost constant heat transfer amount.

  • The effervescent atomizer is one of twin-fluid atomizers that aeration gas enters into bulk liquid and two-phase flow is formed in the mixing section. The effervescent atomizer requires low injection pressure and small amount of aeration gas, as compared to other twin-fluid atomizers. In this study, cold flow test was conducted to investigate the spray characteristics of aerated impinging jets. The present effervescent impinging atomizers were composed of the aerator device and like-on-like doublet impinging atomizer which had different impinging angles. To analyze the spray characteristics such as breakup length and droplet size distribution, the image processing technique was adopted by using instantaneous images at each flow condition. Non-dimensional parameters, induced by the homogeneous flow model, were used to predict the breakup length. The breakup length was decreased with the mixture Reynolds number and impinging angle increasing. The result of droplets showed that the size distribution was axisymmetric about the center of the injector and their diameter tended to decrease with increasing GLR.

  • Droplet impinging into a cavity at micro-scale is one of important fluidic issues for microfabrications, e.g. bio-chip applications and inkjet deposition processes in the PLED panel manufacturing. The droplets generally dispensing from an inkjet head, which contains an array of nozzles, have a volume in several picoliters, while each nozzle jets the droplets into cavities with micron-meter size located on substrates. Due to measurement difficulties at micro-scale, the numerical simulation could serve as an efficient and preliminary way to evaluate the micro-sized droplet impinging behavior into a cavity. The micro-fluidic flow is computed by solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations through a finite volume discretization. The droplet front is predicted by a volume-of-fluid approach, in which the surface tension is modeled as a function of the fluid concentration. This paper discusses the influence of fluid properties, such as surface tension and fluid viscosity, on micro-fluidic characteristics at different jetting speeds in the deposition process via the proposed numerical approach.

  • The emission in the exhaust gas from diesel engine is effected by the fuel spray characteristics. The spray of D.I. diesel engine impinges on a piston cavity and a cylinder wall. It is very important to know exactly the distribution and behavior of the spray inside cylinder. The objective of this study is to develop more accurate evaporation model. The EPISO code was used to analyze the flow characteristics in the engine. The Wakil model and the Faeth model are applied to the EPISO code to analyze the behavior of impinging spray. And also experimental and numerical analysis were carried out. The spray behavior characteristics were investigated by changing injection pressure, ambient pressure and temperature. The behavior of impinging spray was strongly effected by the change of ambient pressure and temperature. The effects of evaporation and rebounding droplet should be considered.

  • In this experiment, a heterogeneous droplet consisted of de-ionized water and olive oil was made through two 31G injection needles. The injection flow rate was $50{\mu}{\ell}/min$ and the droplet size was 2 mm. The droplet was impinged onto a sapphire plate which was heated up to $300^{\circ}C$ by a heater. Two high speed cameras were used for visualization, and the frame rate was 20,000 fps. A 150W metal halite lamp was used for illumination. The dropping height was fixed to 20 mm and the corresponding Weber number was 10.6 based on water. Due to different boiling points of two liquids, partial boiling features of heterogeneous droplet was observed. At the Leidenfrost condition, micro explosion phenomenon has occurred.

  • Recently, impinging spray is used for atomization of diesel engine, but it bring on adhesion of fuel. Therefore, we studied about droplet behavior on high temperature plate changing the size of droplet, surface temperatures, and surface roughness of plate. In this study, We studied to confirm experimentally about mechanism of evaporation and ignition process of single fuel droplet. We observed evaporation time, evaporation appearance and ignition delay time by the photopraphs of 8mm video camera. Experimental results are summarized as follows: 1. The boiling point of fuel affect a evaporation and ignition process. 2. The surface roughness affect a evaporation time. 3. The ignition delay time relate to evaporation characteristic.

  • An experimental study is presented for water droplet impingement on a steel surface in the process of heat treatment. The objective of the present work is to examine characteristic of evaporation cooling due to surface roughness and droplet diameter under conductive heat input condition. The surface temperatures varied from $80{\sim}155^{\circ}C$, surface roughness was from $R_a=0.12{\mu}m$ to $R_a=1.14{\mu}m$ and droplet diameter was from 2.4 mm to 3.0 mm. The results show that the total evaporation time is shorter for the larger surface roughness and the smaller droplet size, the time average heat flux has maximum value for the larger surface roughness and the smaller droplet size. The total evaporation time has not influence on the nuclear boiling region.

  • The variances of atomization characteristics with the misalignment of injectors defined as the fraction of skewness for various angles of impingement and pressure conditions were studied using the doublet impinging injectors with a like-on-like arrangement. Water was used as simulant and the spray characteristics along with the changes in the skewness were analyzed using the methods of spray image photography. Experiment was carried for the impinging nozzles of orifice diameter of 1.2 mm within Reynolds numbers ranging from $9{\times}10^3-4.5{\times}10^4$ and the fraction of skewness considered for the experiment ranges from 0.0 to 0.9 at ambient temperature condition. Flat sheet with a distinct rim produced perpendicular to the plane of impinging jets goes ondisappear and sheet appears comparatively shorterwith the increase in fraction of skewness resulting the atomization of fluid droplet very close to impingement point with decrease in breakup length and increase in spray angle up to certain extent. The maximum allowable skewness was found as the result. The skewness up to the certain extent can be considered as the parameter to control the atomization characteristics of simulant inside the combustion chamberproviding the high economic performance of fuel and time.
