  • The paper presents computational and flow visualization results on a centrifugal blood pump. 4 impeller designs were tested at a rotational speed of 2000 rpm using blood analog as working fluid. All impellers have seven blades but of different geometry (Impellers A3, A4, B2 and R7). Flow visualization within the impeller passages was conducted using an image de-rotation system. A pair of large scale vortices was found within the blades of impeller R7 while a single vortex was found in most of the passages of backward facing impellers (Impellers A3, A4 and B2). To establish the effects of blade geometry on blood cells, CFD was used to simulate the blade to blade flow to provide an estimate of the maximum shear stress. The results showed that though most of the stresses within the blade passages are below a threshold level of 150 N/m$^2$for extensive erythrocyte damage to occur, there are some regions near to the leading edge of the pressure side where the shear stresses a abode threshold level.

  • The Performance of in-line duct fan depends on the design parameters of impeller and guide vane. such as sweep back angle of impeller, the number of blades, outlet blade angle, guide vane angle etc. In this experimental study total four kinds of impellers having different sweep back angles, $90^{\circ},\;72.5^{\circ},\;55^{\circ},\;37.5^{\circ}$ with 8 guide vanes, different the number of blades, 6ea, 8ea, 10ea, 12ea, different kinds of outlet blade angles, $30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}.\;60^{\circ}$ and different kinds of guide vane angles, $15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}$ were selected and their performance measured to investigate the effects of them. The results were non-dimensionalized to compare their performance.

  • This paper presents the application of airfoil impeller for enhancement of aerodynamic performance of a high speed centrifugal fan. Three airfoil impellers are proposed, considering the maximum thickness and the location of maximum thickness of the airfoil. C4 airfoil thickness distribution is applied to the three airfoil impellers. The impellers are evaluated using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and suction power test. From the results, it is confirmed that flow separations on the pressure side of the impeller blades and the pressure side of diffuser blades are reduced when airfoil blade is applied to the impellers. It is also confirmed that with the centrifugal fan having airfoil impellers, there is an increase in fan efficiency by approximately 3% and reduction in specific sound level by approximately 1.3 dB(A).

  • Impeller blades in the centrifugal compressor are subjected to periodic aerodynamic excitations by interactions between the impeller and the diffuser vanes (DV) in resonant conditions. This may cause high cycle fatigue (HCF) and eventually result in failure of the blades. In order to predict the structural response accurately, the aerodynamic excitation and the major resonant conditions were predicted using unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and structural analysis. Then, a forced vibration analysis was performed by going through one-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI). A numerical analysis procedure was established to evaluate the structural safety with respect to HCF. The numerical analysis procedure proposed in this paper is expected to contribute toward preventing HCF problems in the initial design stage of an impeller.

  • In this study, a prediction theory for specific noise that is the overall characteristic of the fan has been proposed. This theory is based on total pressure prediction and broadband noise prediction. The specific noises of two forward curved fans with different number of blades were predicted. The flow around the impeller having 120 blades (MF120) was more biased at a certain positions than the impeller with 40 blades (MF40). An effective domain of the energy conversion of MF40 has extended overall than MF120. The total pressure was affected by the slip factor and pressure loss caused by the vortex flow. The suppression of a major pressure drop by the vortex flow and expansion of the effective domain for energy conversion contributed to an increase in the total pressure of MF40 at the design point. The position of maximum relative velocity was different for each fan. The relative velocity of MF120 was less than that of MF40 due to the deviation angle. The specific noise of MF120 was 2.7 dB less than that of MF40 due to the difference in internal flow. It has been quantitatively estimated that the deceleration in the relative velocity contributed to the improvement in the overall performance.

  • This paper presents the response surface optimization method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis to optimize the shape of a forward-curved blades centrifugal fan. For numerical analysis, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations. In order to reduce huge computing time due to a large number of blades in forward-curved blades centrifugal fan, the flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow by introducing the impeller force models. Three geometric variables, i.e., location of cut off, radius of cut off, and width of impeller, and one operating variable, i.e., flow rate, were selected as design variables. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. And, optimum design flow rate was found by using flow rate as one of design variables. It was found that the optimization process provides reliable design of this kind of fans with reasonable computing time.

  • This paper is concerned with the evaluation of mixing performance of a particle mixer, which consists of a vertical cylindrical vessel and a rotating impeller with several blades. We consider four design variables for the mixer blades, such as the angle, length, and number of blades, and the gap between the blades and the vessel bottom. The particle mixing process due to the impeller rotation is simulated using the discrete element method, and the mixing performance is quantitatively evaluated by introducing a mixing index. Analyzing the main effects and interactions of the four design variables through the design-of-experiments approach, it is concluded that the blade angle has the most dominant influence on the mixing performance whereas the gap has no significant influence. In addition, we determine the best combination of design parameters to maximize the mixing performance.

  • The objective of present study is to find the interaction between volute and impeller of the centrifugal turbomachinery with rectangular cross-sectional volute. Flow measurement were taken in shrouded impeller with 12 backward type blades by using a five-hole pressure probe. The measurements are carried out in 7 flow rate, respectively. Primary function of a centrifugal turbo machinery volute is to serve the flow from the impeller and diffuser to pipe system. For the off-design conditions, Influence of pressure distortion was shown by these measurements. As a result, It has caused the decrease of total efficiency of centrifugal turbomachinery. We have also taken data to design volute by these measurements.

  • LDV measurements were conducted on the planes between impeller blades of torque converter. The flow fields are extremely complex because they contain unsteady viscous three-dimensional flows. Besides of their complexity, the difference in rotor speeds between the impeller and turbine compound the flow effects. The good spatial resolution of the LDV allows measurements of the instantaneous flow structures within the impeller passage, yielding valuable information about the production automotive torque converter in realistic operating conditions. It was found that the mass flow rates are strongly related with the internal flow characteristics of torque converter.
