Omnidirectional Environmental Projection Mapping with Single Projector and Single Spherical Mirror (단일 프로젝터와 구형 거울을 활용한 전 방향프로젝션 시스템)

  • Researchers have developed virtual reality environments to provide audience with more visually immersive experiences than previously possible. One of the most popular solutions to build the immersive VR space is a multi-projection technique. However, utilization of multiple projectors requires large spaces, expensive cost, and accurate geometry calibration among projectors. This paper presents a novel omnidirectional projection system with a single projector and a single spherical mirror.We newly designed the simple and intuitive calibration system to define the shape of environment and the relative position of mirror/projector. For successful image projection, our optimized omnidirectional image generation step solves image distortion produced by the spherical mirror and a calibration problem produced by unknown parameters such as the shape of environment and the relative position between the mirror and the projector. Additionally, the focus correction is performed to improve the quality of the projection. The experiment results show that our method can generate the optimized image given a normal panoramic image for omnidirectional projection in a rectangular space.

SHVC-based V-PCC Content ISOBMFF Encapsulation and DASH Configuration Method (SHVC 기반 V-PCC 콘텐츠 ISOBMFF 캡슐화 및 DASH 구성 방안)

  • Video based Point Cloud Compression (V-PCC) is one of the compression methods for compressing point clouds, and shows high efficiency in dynamic point cloud compression with movement due to the feature of compressing point cloud data using an existing video codec. Accordingly, V-PCC is drawing attention as a core technology for immersive content services such as AR/VR. In order to effectively service these V-PCC contents through a media streaming platform, it is necessary to encapsulate them in the existing media file format, ISO based Media File Format (ISOBMFF). However, in order to service through an adaptive streaming platform such as Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), it is necessary to encode V-PCC contents of various qualities and store them in the server. Due to the size of the 2D media, it causes a great burden on the encoder and the server compared to the existing 2D media. As a method to solve such a problem, it may be considered to configure a streaming platform based on content obtained through V-PCC content encoding based on SHVC. Therefore, this paper encapsulates the SHVC-based V-PCC bitstream into ISOBMFF suitable for DASH service and proposes a configuration method to service it. In addition, in this paper, we propose ISOBMFF encapsulation and DASH configuration method to effectively service SHVC-based V-PCC contents, and confirm them through verification experiments.

Inclusive educational effectiveness through Metaverse for the disabled students and policy suggestions (장애학생 메타버스 교육의 포용적 공공소통적 효과성과 정책적 제언)

  • In the midst of going through a non-face-to-face society, most of human activities narrowed down to the platform, restrictions on external activities are bringing the internal scalability of digital technology. Metaverse is virtually shifting reality and increasing the possibility of utilization in various areas. However, researches linked to the educational effects of metaverse, especially students with disabilities, are still an unknown area that lacks exploration. This paper focuses on the fact that metaverse-education is widening educational fields that meets the various needs of disabled students to realize social good and inclusive education, and communication effects such as resolving barriers to interaction are prominent. As a research method, examining literature research papers linked to AR/VR, metaverse with communication skills, interviews, articles, and columns by experts, and policy suggestions and implications for the special education was conducted. Although the limitations of research are confirmed, significant results are found on inclusive education, which provides educational maximizing effects and realizing human rights through direct immersive experience reflecting the Cone of Experience Theory. Hopefully follow-up studies on meta-edu for disabled students will be carried out in the future, and various interdisciplinary discussions are needed to carefully observe inclusive policies and benefits so that the socially vulnerable are not excluded from technologies in ICT society.

A Study on the Visualization of Data in Virtual Space utilizing Realistic Exhibition Contents - Focusing on the application of the Tamed Cloud clustering algorithm in 70mK project (전시콘텐츠에 구현된 가상공간 내 데이터 시각화 연구 - 70mK의 Tamed Cloud 군집형 알고리즘 적용을 중심으로)

  • This study examines the application of data visualization technology using a clustered data algorithm called 'Tamed Cloud' to virtual spaces and seeks the possibility of implementing it in various types of realistic exhibition contents. To this end, we first attempt to classify virtual reality (VR) exhibition contents starting with COVID-19, and summarize technologies applied. Also, various realistic exhibition contents provide visitors with an opportunity to appreciate the artworks through online and virtual exhibitions. In this trend, virtual reality and augmented reality (AR) technologies have been introduced, allowing visitors to enjoy the artwork more immersively, and the possibility of realistic exhibition content with interaction between the artwork and the user is also being demonstrated. Based on this background, this study examines the history of exhibition contents by dividing them before and after the advent of virtual reality technology, and examines how the clustered algorithm technology called Tamed Cloud was applied to virtual space and implemented as a realistic exhibition content in <70mK> project. By synthesizing all of this, we propose a convergence method of data visualization, virtual reality, and realistic content, and propose it as a new alternative to realistic exhibition content in virtual space.

The Effectiveness of Jeju Island Mixed Reality Tourism Application: Focusing on the Moderating Role of Users' K-Culture Involvement

  • In this study, we introduce a multi-modal mixed reality (MR) application for advertising the main touristic landmarks on Jeju Island, and evaluate its effectiveness based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with a focus on the user's involvement in Korean culture (K-Culture). Specifically, we deployed several stimuli to enable users to retrieve information, visualize a variety of heritage content such as text, images, videos, virtual artifacts, and immerse in a VR environment to experience the heritage locations. The results of the online survey with 436 participants showed that for consumers with low K-Culture involvement, Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease-of-Use did not affect their Intention to Visit the island. Still, it had a significant impact on their Intention to Use the application. On the other hand, for the group with high K-Culture involvement, Perceived Usefulness had no effect on the Intention to Use and Intention to Visit. However, Perceived Ease-of-Use had a significant impact on their Intention to Use the application and Intention to Visit Jeju Island. Therefore, when user involvement in K-Culture is high, convenience of use has played a significant role in sensory media usage and the intention to visit, regardless of the usefulness of the mixed reality content. In contrast, users with low K-Culture involvement primarily focused on the functional aspects of the application. These findings open the path for follow-up studies on K-Culture involvement and immersive media tourism marketing, which will benefit digital tourism marketing and Korea's tourism industry.

Geometry Padding for Segmented Sphere Projection (SSP) in 360 Video (360 비디오의 SSP를 위한 기하학적 패딩)

  • 360 video is attracting attention as immersive media, and is also considered in VVC (Versatile Video Coding), which is being developed in JVET (Joint Video Expert Team) as a new video coding standard of post-HEVC. A 2D image projected from 360 video for its compression may has discontinuities between the projected faces and inactive regions, and they may cause the visual artifacts in the reconstructed video as well as decrease of coding efficiency. In this paper, we propose a method of efficient geometric padding to reduce these discontinuities and inactive regions in the projection format of SSP (Segmented Sphere Projection). Experimental results show that the proposed method improves subjective quality compared to the existing padding of SSP that uses copy padding with minor loss of coding gain.

Affordance Elements According to the Usability of the Interface of Immersive Virtual Reality Clinical Skill Content (몰입형 가상현실 의료 술기 콘텐츠의 인터페이스 사용성에 따른 어포던스 하위 평가 요소에 관한 연구)

  • Virtual reality is actively used in the medical field as a learning effectiveness that induces immersion, but research on the factors that induce learning immersion is insufficient. Therefore, this study extracted the usability and cognitive affordance evaluation elements of the interface through literature research and selected four types of virtual reality medical contents to conduct a Useability-Test for experts. Based on this, an interface design method according to virtual reality medical technology content was proposed. In summary, it can be seen that the information-providing interface affects immersion due to visibility, distance from the experience's gaze, color harmony, uniform visualization, feedback, reaction speed, and expected changes resulting from manipulation, and does not impair immersion. This study has limitations in generalization using limited content, so it is expected that continuous research will discuss the development of standardized guides in interface design and the precision of interface design research from a user perspective.

Development of Character Goods Content Utilizing Marker-based Augmented Reality (마커기반 증강현실을 활용한 캐릭터 굿즈 콘텐츠 개발)

  • Recently, there has been growing interest in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with a particular focus on the advancement of augmented reality (AR) devices. However, there is a shortage of AR content. Augmented reality operates through marker-based and markerless methods. The marker-based approach involves using a camera to capture images that serve as markers, enhancing them through AR principles. To address the scarcity of AR content and improve the quality of character goods, this study proposes integrating AR technology into character goods. The character industry is expanding each year, leading to a diverse range of character goods. Character acrylic stands, among these goods, leverage game, webtoon, and animation character IPs for sales. To enhance the design process, we utilized the character image as a marker, allowing for the creation of content that aligns with the characteristics of the character IP. We selected a webtoon character and developed AR content, incorporating features such as voice, speech bubbles, and an introduction to the webtoon, tailored to the webtoon's characteristics. This study demonstrates the potential of AR to present visual and auditory information, paving the way for a variety of products, including diverse content. We anticipate that utilizing this research will lead to the emergence of products encompassing various contents.

A Study on XR Handball Sports for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

  • This study proposes a novel approach to enhancing the social inclusion and participation of individuals with developmental disabilities. Utilizing cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) technology, we designed and developed a metaverse simulator that enables individuals with developmental disabilities to safely and conveniently experience indoor handicapped handball sports. This simulator provides an environment where individuals with disabilities can experience and practice handball matches. For the modeling and animation of handball players, we employed advanced modeling and motion capture technologies to accurately replicate the movements required in handball matches. Additionally, we ported various training programs, including basic drills, penalty throws, and target games, onto XR (Extended Reality) devices. Through this research, we have explored the development of immersive assistive tools that enable individuals with developmental disabilities to more easily participate in activities that may be challenging in real-life scenarios. This is anticipated to broaden the scope of social participation for individuals with developmental disabilities and enhance their overall quality of life.

A Study on Development of Experimental Contents Using 3-channel Multi-Image Playback Technique: Based on transparent OLED and dual layer display system (3채널 멀티 영상 재생 기법과 증강현실을 이용한 체험 콘텐츠 제작에 관한 연구: 투명 OLED 및 듀얼 레이어 디스플레이 시스템 기반)

  • Among the methods of developing tourist spots and culture as the experience contents, it is a common method to display high-quality video images on a large display, and it is necessary to make a special difference between the participant's active participation and the visual experience in other regions. In this paper, using the single molecular OLED and active type, the regional tourist spots blend transparent OLED dual-layer display systems with the extended image implementation and augmented interaction techniques to give the participants a real-world experience, such as directing to new experiences and beautiful sights. In this paper, additional images and UI layers are applied to the layers of the images to allow visitors to experience sightseeing information, weather, maps, accommodations, festivals and photo materials with image. In addition to the dual-layer system, it also added a multi-display system that additionally has one vertical 55-inch display on each side, adding to the experience the immersive experience and interface interlocking fun. By using transparent OLED, dual layer panel and 3-channel Multi-image playback technique, the augmented type experience contents which can experience the local attractions in Jeollanamdo province in Korea at all time without any limitation of time and space were developed.
