We present a new design approach and an example design for an image-space telecentric two-mirror system that has a fast f-number and a wide-field line image. The initial design of the telecentric mirror system is a conventional axially symmetric system, consisting of a flat primary mirror with fourth-order aspheric deformation and an oblate ellipsoidal secondary mirror to correct spherical aberration, coma, and field curvature. Even though in the optimized design the primary mirror is tilted, to avoid ray obstruction by the secondary mirror, the image-space telecentric two-mirror system shows quite good imaging performance, for a line imager.

We describe a common optical system that merges a LADAR system, which generates a point cloud, and a more traditional imaging system operating in the LWIR, which generates image data. The optimum diameter of the entrance pupil was determined by analysis of detection ranges of the LADAR sensor, and the result was applied to design a common optical system using LADAR sensors and LWIR sensors; the performance of these sensors was then evaluated. The minimum detectable signal of the $128{\times}128-pixel$ LADAR detector was calculated as 20.5 nW. The detection range of the LADAR optical system was calculated to be 1,000 m, and according to the results, the optimum diameter of the entrance pupil was determined to be 15.7 cm. The modulation transfer function (MTF) in relation to the diffraction limit of the designed common optical system was analyzed and, according to the results, the MTF of the LADAR optical system was 98.8% at the spatial frequency of 5 cycles per millimeter, while that of the LWIR optical system was 92.4% at the spatial frequency of 29 cycles per millimeter. The detection, recognition, and identification distances of the LWIR optical system were determined to be 5.12, 2.82, and 1.96 km, respectively.

Optical Coherence Tomography is a new medical dianostic imaging technology which can perform micron resolution cross-sectional or tomograpic imaging in biological tissue. In this paper, we analyze OCT system. And we have 2-dimensional OCT image implementation using low coherence SLD.
We have investigated optimization of the working distance (WD) for a highly miniaturized imaging probe for endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT). The WD is the axial distance from the distal end of the imaging probe to its beam focus, which is demanded for dimensional margins of protective structures, operational safety, or full utilization of the axial imaging range of OCT. With an objective lens smaller than a few hundred micrometers in diameter, a micro-optic imaging probe naturally exhibits a very short WD due to the down-scaled optical structure. For a maximized WD careful design is required with the optical aperture of the objective lens optimally filled by the incident beam. The diffraction-involved effect was taken into account in our analysis of the apertured beam. In this study, we developed a simple design formula on the maximum achievable WD based on our diffraction simulation. It was found that the maximum WD is proportional to the aperture size squared. In experiment, we designed and fabricated very compact OCT probes with long WDs. Our 165-㎛-thick fiber-optic probes provided WDs of 3 mm or longer w ith reasonable OCT imaging performance.
Compact system cameras (CSCs) are commonly used nowadays and feature enhanced video functions and thin yet light interchangeable lenses. They differ from digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras in their lack of mirror boxes. CSCs, however, have autofocus (AF) speeds lower than those of conventional DSLRs, requiring weight reduction of their AF groups. To ensure the marketability of large telephoto zoom lenses with fixed f/2.8 regardless of field angle variation, in particular, light weight AF groups are essential. In this paper, we introduce a paraxial optical design method and present a new, large, telephoto zoom lens with f/2.8 regardless of the field angle variation, plus a lightweight AF group consisting of only one lens. Using the basic paraxial optical design and optimization methods, we fabricated a new and lighter zoom lens system, including a single-lens, lightweight AF group with almost the same performance.

In order to deduce the difficulty of fixing the Ritchey-Chretien (R-C) dual reflective optical system and enhance the stability of the secondary mirror, a compact integral structure is presented here composed of two transmitting and two reflective aspheric surfaces. The four surfaces were manufactured from a single germanium lens and integrated together. The two reflective surfaces formed by coating the inner reflecting films were assembled in one lens. It makes the installation of the two mirrors easier and the structure of the secondary mirror more stable. A design of mid-wave infrared (MWIR) compact imaging system is presented with a spectral range chosen as $3.7-4.8{\mu}m$. The effective focal length is f=90 mm. The field of view (FOV) for the lens is $4.88^{\circ}$. It has good imaging capability with Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of all field of view more than 0.55 close to the diffraction limitation. Outdoor experiments were carried out and it is shown that the integral catadioptric optical system performs well on imaging.
Wireless optical communication is expected for high-speed optical communication in the areas of saturated optical fiber communication and low population density. In this paper, we present an optical transmitter system for wireless optical communication with new design concepts different from the usual optical imaging system. The specifications are the following: the source is a laser diode(LD) of wavelength 830 nm in which the divergent angle from the tangential plane differs from that from the sagittal plane. Here, the requested transmission distances are very long range such as 500 m to 1500 m and beam diameter is 3 m at the receiver with symmetrical energy distribution. For the evaluation characteristics of this kind of non-imaging system, two optical quantities, the relative illumination distribution and energy transfer efficiency, are numerically calculated through lots of ray tracing.

The semiconductor industry relies on digital optical imaging for the overlay metrology of integrated circuit patterns. One critical performance demand in the particular application of digital imaging is placed on the edge resolution that is defined as the smallest detectable displacement of an edge from its image acquired in digital from. As the critical feature size of integrated circuit patterns reaches below 0.35 micrometers, the edge resolution is required to be less than 0.01 micrometers. This requirement is so stringent that fundamental behaviors of digital optical imaging need to be explored especially for the precision coordinate metrology. Our investigation reveals that the edge resolution shows quasi-random characteristics, not being simply deduced from relevant opto-electronic system parameters. Hence, a stochastic upper bound analysis is made to come up with the worst edge resolution that can statistically well predict actual indeterminate edge resolutions obtained with high magnification microscope objectives.
In this study, an optical imaging method was developed for the measurements of the sizes and velocities of droplets in sprays. Double-exposure single-frame spray images were captured by the imaging system. An image processing program was developed for the measurements of the sizes and positions of individual particles including separation of the overlapped particles and particle tracking and pairing at two time instants. To recognize and separate overlapping particles, the morphological method based on watershed segmentation as well as separation using the perimeter and convex hull of image was used consecutively. Better results in separation were obtained by utilization of both methods especially for the multiple or heavily-overlapped particles. The match probability method was adopted for particle tracking and pairing after identifying the positions of individual particles and it produced good matching results even for large particles like droplets in sprays. Therefore, the developed optical imaging method could provide a reliable way of analyzing the motion and size distribution of droplets produced by various sprays and atomization devices.
