To solve the edge ringing or block effect caused by the partial differential diffusion in image enhancement domain, a new image enhancement algorithm based on bidirectional diffusion, which smooths the flat region or isolated noise region and sharpens the edge region in different types of defect images on aviation composites, is presented. Taking the image pixel's neighborhood intensity and spatial characteristics as the attribute descriptor, the presented bidirectional diffusion model adaptively chooses different diffusion criteria in different defect image regions, which are elaborated are as follows. The forward diffusion is adopted to denoise along the pixel's gradient direction and edge direction in the pixel's smoothing area while the backward diffusion is used to sharpen along the pixel's gradient direction and the forward diffusion is used to smooth along the pixel's edge direction in the pixel's edge region. The comparison experiments were implemented in the delamination, inclusion, channel, shrinkage, blowhole and crack defect images, and the comparison results indicate that our algorithm not only preserves the image feature better but also improves the image contrast more obviously.

Object-oriented analysis-synthesis coding subdivides each image of a sequence into moving objects and compensates the motion of each object. Thus it can reconstruct real motion better than conventional motion-compensated coding techniques at very-low-bit-rates. It uses a mapping parameter technique for estimating motion information of each object. Since a mapping parameter technique uses gradient operators it is sensitive to redundant details and noise. To accurately determine mapping parameters, we propose a new analysis method using integral projections for estimation of gradient values. Also to reconstruct correctly the local motion the proposed algorithm divides an image into segmented objects each of which having uniform motion information while the conventional one assumes a large object having the same motion information. Computer simulation results with several test sequences show that the proposed image analysis method in object-oriented analysis-synthesis coding shows better performance than the conventional one.
Purpose : A method to estimate a real k-space trajectory based on a circuit model of the gradient system is proposed for spiral imaging. The estimated k-space trajectory instead of the ideal trajectory is used in the reconstruction to improve the image quality in the spiral imaging. Materials and Methods : Since the gradient system has self resistance, capacitance, and inductance, as well as the mutual inductance between the magnet and the gradient coils, the generated gradient fields have delays and transient responses compared to the input waveform to the gradient system. The real gradient fields and their trajectory in k-space play an important role in the reconstruction. In this paper, the gradient system is modeled with R-L-C circuits, and real gradient fields are estimated from the input to the model. An experimental method to determine the model parameters (R, L, C values) is also suggested from the quality of the reconstructed image. Results : The gradient fields are estimated from the circuit model of the gradient system at 1.5 Tesla MRI system. The spiral trajectory obtained by the integration of the estimated gradient fields is used for the reconstruction. From experiments, the reconstructed images using the estimated trajectory show improved uniformity, reduced overshoots near the edges, and enhanced resolutions compared to those using the ideal trajectory without model. Conclusion : The gradient system was successfully modeled by the R-L-C circuits. Much improved reconstruction was achieved in the spiral imaging using the trajectory estimated by the proposed model.

In this paper, a gradient magnitude hardware architecture based on hardware folding design method is proposed for low power image feature extraction. For the hardware complexity reduction, the projection vector chracteristic of gradient magnitude is applied. The proposed hardware architecture can be implemented with the small degradation of the gradient magnitude data quality. The FPGA implementation result shows the 41% of logic elements and 62% embedded multiplier savings compared with previous work using Altera Cyclone VI (EP4CE115F29C7N) FPGA and Quartus II v16.0 environment.
Style transfer based on neural network provides very high quality results by reflecting the high level structural characteristics of images, and thereby has recently attracted great attention. This paper deals with the problem of resolution limitation due to GPU memory in performing such neural style transfer. We can expect that the gradient operation for style transfer based on partial image, with the aid of the fixed size of receptive field, can produce the same result as the gradient operation using the entire image. Based on this idea, each component of the style transfer loss function is analyzed in this paper to obtain the necessary conditions for partitioning and padding, and to identify, among the information required for gradient calculation, the one that depends on the entire input. By structuring such information for using it as auxiliary constant input for partition-based gradient calculation, this paper develops a recursive algorithm for super high-resolution image style transfer. Since the proposed method performs style transfer by partitioning input image into the size that a GPU can handle, it can perform style transfer without the limit of the input image resolution accompanied by the GPU memory size. With the aid of such super high-resolution support, the proposed method can provide a unique style characteristics of detailed area which can only be appreciated in super high-resolution style transfer.
To evaluated the image quality and the patient exposure for the chest radiography, its fundamental imaging properties were investigated. The basic imaging properties were evaluated by measuring characteristic curves, relative speeds, average gradient, and patient exposure dose. The image qualities were evaluated by using a rotating meter. It was found that the film gradient of SRO750/SRH system was 3.13 and that of SRO750/HR-C30 was 1.77. The ratio of SRO1000/TMH to FS/RP-1 was 1 to 18.2. It was possible to visualize the static image when the exposure time was less than 2.5 msec in patient that had respiratory excessive motion, heart beat and natural physical motion, and less than 8.5 msec in normal. The ratio of medical exposure dose compared with our method was 1 to 25 in the routine chest radiography and maximum was 1 to 70. In estimation of the image quality in same cases, we found that the image of SRO1000/SRH and TMH of super sensitive systems was the same results. We found that these super sensitive screen-film systems were available for the chest radiography considering the relationship between the image quality and patient exposure.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image can link with the microscopic world through reflecting interaction between electrons and materials. The SEM images are easily subject to blurring distortions during the imaging process. Inspired by the fact that dark channel prior captures the changes to blurred SEM images caused by the blur process, we propose a method to evaluate the SEM images sharpness based on the dark channel prior. A SEM image database is first established with mean opinion score collected as ground truth. For the quality assessment of the SEM image, the dark channel map is generated. Since blurring is typically characterized by the spread of edge, edge of dark channel map is extracted. Then noise is removed by an edge-preserving filter. Finally, the maximum gradient and the average gradient of image are combined to generate the final sharpness score. The experimental results on the SEM blurred image database show that the proposed algorithm outperforms both the existing state-of-the-art image sharpness metrics and the general-purpose no-reference quality metrics.

The edge detection system makes use or 3*3 compass gradient masks, which are well suited for digital implementation. Edge angles are quantized to eight equally spaced directions, suitable for chain coding of contours. Use of edge direction msp improves the simple thresholding of gradient modulus image. The concept of local connectivity of the edge direction map is useful improving the performance of this method as well as other edge operators such as Kirsch and Sobel.
A clustering algorithms with dynamic adjustment of learning rate for GBFCM(Gradient Based FCM) is proposed in this paper. This algorithm combines two idea of dynamic K-means algorithms and GBFCM : learning rate variation with entropy concept and continuous membership grade. To evaluate dynamic GBFCM, we made comparisons with Kohonen's Self-Organizing Map over several tutorial examples and image compression. The results show that DGBFCM(Dynamic GBFCM) gives superior performance over Kohonen's algorithm in terms of signal-to-noise.

This paper proposes a regularized iterative image restoration using method of conjugate gradient considering a priori information. Compared with conventional regularized method of conjugate gradient, this method has merits to prevent the artifacts by ringing effects and the partial magnification of the noise in the course of restoring the image degraded by blur and additive noise. Proposed method applies the constraints to accelerate the convergence ratio near the edge portions, and the regularized parameter suppresses the magnification of the noise. As experimental results, I show the superior convergence ratio and the suppression by the artifacts of the proposed method compared with conventional methods.
