Health Problems and Health Services Utilization of Infants Born Prematurely in the U.S.

  • Purposes: The purposes of this study are to describe the health problems experienced by VLBW premature infants and their health care services utilization during the first year of life Method: Eighteen mothers of VLBW premature infants completed a survey questionnaire, asking socioeconomic/demographic information, health/developmental problems experienced by their infants, and their use of health care services. Results: Of the 18 infants, 78% experienced respiratory problems such as cold/running nose and wheezing during the first year and 33% experienced gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting, diarrhea and constipation. Twelve (67%) infants visited the emergency department at least one time and 10 infants (56%) were hospitalized at least once during their first year of age. Interestingly, infants without chronic lung disease visited the emergency department more than infants without chronic lung disease (p=.213). Infants living in non-disadvantaged neighborhoods were hospitalized more than infants living in disadvantaged neighborhoods (p=.000). Conclusions: Health care providers should initiate educating mothers, particularly those living in disadvantaged neighborhoods, about post-NICU discharge health care needs of their VLBW premature infants while their infants were still in the NICU so that unnecessary visits to the emergency department and rehospitalizations can be possibly prevented.

Mechanical properties of concrete containing recycled materials

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of recycled materials, namely, shredded scrap tire (SST), reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and class C fly ash (CFA) on compressive and tensile strength of concrete. Either SST or RAP was used as an aggregate replacement and class C fly ash (CFA) as Portland cement replacement for making concrete. A total of two types of SST and RAP, namely, chips and screenings were used for replacing coarse and fine aggregates, respectively. A total of 26 concrete mixes containing different replacement level of SST or RAP and CFA were designed. Using the mix designs, cylindrical specimens of concrete were prepared, cured in water tank, and tested for unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and indirect tensile strength (IDT) after 28 days. Experimental results showed aggregate substitution with SST decreased both UCS and IDT of concrete. On the contrary, replacement of aggregate with RAP improved UCS values. Specimens containing RAP chips resulted in concrete with higher IDT values as compared to corresponding specimens containing RAP screenings. Addition of 40% CFA was found to improve UCS values and degrade IDT values of SST containing specimens. Statistical analysis showed that IDT of SST and RAP can be estimated as approximately 13% and 12% of UCS, respectively.

Analyzing nuclear reactor simulation data and uncertainty with the group method of data handling

  • Group method of data handling (GMDH) is considered one of the earliest deep learning methods. Deep learning gained additional interest in today's applications due to its capability to handle complex and high dimensional problems. In this study, multi-layer GMDH networks are used to perform uncertainty quantification (UQ) and sensitivity analysis (SA) of nuclear reactor simulations. GMDH is utilized as a surrogate/metamodel to replace high fidelity computer models with cheap-to-evaluate surrogate models, which facilitate UQ and SA tasks (e.g. variance decomposition, uncertainty propagation, etc.). GMDH performance is validated through two UQ applications in reactor simulations: (1) low dimensional input space (two-phase flow in a reactor channel), and (2) high dimensional space (8-group homogenized cross-sections). In both applications, GMDH networks show very good performance with small mean absolute and squared errors as well as high accuracy in capturing the target variance. GMDH is utilized afterward to perform UQ tasks such as variance decomposition through Sobol indices, and GMDH-based uncertainty propagation with large number of samples. GMDH performance is also compared to other surrogates including Gaussian processes and polynomial chaos expansions. The comparison shows that GMDH has competitive performance with the other methods for the low dimensional problem, and reliable performance for the high dimensional problem.

Comparison of Mechanical Properties between Carbon/PEEK Composites and Ti Stem for Optimal Design

  • This study, a new concept design of the stem and aims to determine the suitability of various carbon/PEEK composite designs for artificial hip joints. Shear stress tested with alternative materials of the Ti-based stem for artificial hip joints. In addition, FEA is conducted according to the fiber ply orientation and the load condition for carbon/PEEK composites. The stem shape of two types was designed through the shape normal of the femur. Multidirectional load cases were used for each FEA model. In the case of general shape, the results show that the stress of ply orientation case II was lower than for cases I and III. On the other hand, in the case of the curved shape, ply orientation case I was lowest. In the case of the Ti stem, the stress of the curved shape was 18% lower than the general shape.

Demographics of dogs and cats with oral tumors presenting to teaching hospitals: 1996-2017

  • Background: Oral neoplasia has been reported to account for 6-7% of all canine cancer and 3% of all feline cancers. To the authors' knowledge the last epidemiologic analysis of general oral cancer in dogs and cats was published in 1976. Objectives: The goal of this study was to report contemporary demographic information regarding oral tumors in dogs and cats. Methods: Information was collected from cats or dogs diagnosed with oral neoplasia from the Veterinary Medical Data Base. Medical records representing cases that presented to one of 26 veterinary teaching hospitals from January 1, 1996 through December 31, 2017 were included. Results: A total of 1,810 dogs and 443 cats were identified. A total of 962 cases (53.6%) of canine oral tumors were classified as malignant and 455 cases as benign (25.4%). The majority of feline oral tumors were classified as malignant (257 cases, 58.1%) and only a few benign (11 cases, 2.5%). The incidence of oral tumors was calculated to be 4.9 per 1,000 dogs (0.5%) and 4.9 per 1,000 cats (0.5%). Conclusions: This incidence of oral tumors is considerably higher than previously reported in both dogs and cats. These results provide valuable information for generation of hypotheses for future investigations of breed-based and pathology-based oral neoplastic studies.

미국 학교도서관이 학업성취에 미치는 효과 연구에 대한 고찰 (A Study on the Impact of School Library Programs on Student Achievement in the USA)

  • 본 연구는 미국의 학교도서관 프로그램이 학생들의 학업성취에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 중 콜로라도 연구 I(l993), II (2000), 텍사스 연구 (2001), 미주리 연구 (2003), 일리노이 연구 (2005)를 분석하였다. 다섯 개 연구의 조사방법과 연구내용을 중점적으로 고찰하였다. 다섯 연구는 성적에 영향을 미치는 학교도서관, 학교 그리고 지역 사회 변수를 도출하기 위하여 공통적으로 상관관계분석, 요인분석, 다중회귀분석을 사용하였다. 모든 연구의 일관된 결론은 도서관 발전수준-직원, 장서, 예산-이 높을수록, 사서교사의 전문적 활동이 활발할수록, 그리고 정보기술의 사용이 활성화되어 있을수록 학생들의 성적이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 미국 아동들의 리터러시 향상과 학교도서관 독서 프로그램과 관련하여 NCLB 법에 관해서도 검토하였다.

교량 플러터의 공기역학적 수동제어 (Suppression of bridge flutter by passive aerodynamic control method)

  • In this study, a new passive aerodynamic control method is proposed. Control plate which is oscillated by TMD-like mechanism makes flutter stabilizing airflow. Effectiveness of proposed model is verified by experimental and analytical study. In addition, various parameters of the proposed system are investigated. Applicability to long span bridge is also examined. According to the research results, proposed model is very effective in suppressing flutter, and it also shows remarkable robustness.

예비 교사들의 맥락 문제 해결 과정 분석 (A Study on the Process of Solving Context Problems by Prospective Teachers)

  • 이 연구는 예비 교사들의 맥락 문제 해결 과정을 분석함으로써 맥락 문제에 대한 우리나라 교사들의 교과 내용 지식과 관련된 특징을 살피려는 목적에서 진행되었다. 문헌 검토를 통해 맥락의 의미를 살피고 맥락 문제가 갖추어야 할 조건을 추출하였다. 이렇게 추출된 맥락 문제의 조건에 비추어 선형 계획법을 배경 지식으로 하는 검사 문제를 개발하였으며 검사 결과 분석을 위한 주요 관점을 Illinois Department of Education(2005)의 평가 틀에 기초하여 '수학적 지식', '전략적 지식', '설명 능력'의 범주로 구체화하였다. 이렇게 구체화한 분석 관점과 평가 틀을 활용하여 각 예비 교사의 반응 결과에 점수를 부여한 다음 예비 교사들의 맥락 문제 해결 과정에서 드러나는 전반적인 경향을 살피고, 각각의 경향이 갖는 시사점을 검사 문제 개발 의도 및 선행 연구 결과에 비추어 분석하였다. 이상의 분석 결과로부터 예비 교사들의 맥락 문제 해결 과정에서 드러난 특징을 4가지로 요약하였다.

Implementation of Pronoun Readings in English: A Categorial Grammar Approach.

  • Pronouns are frequently used in English, and their resolution is important to capture meaning of sentences. This paper provides a computational implementation for pronoun readings in English, based on Chierchia's (1988) Binding Theory in Categorial Grammar. A CCG-like system is newly devised for implementing his ideas, where syntactic phenomena are represented by the functor-argument relations of categories. This relation triggers resolution algorithms, and reflexives and pronominals are resolved succinctly. In sum, this paper gives an efficient resolution algorithm for English pronouns within Categorial Grammar.
