  • Jet aviation fuel is one of liquid fuel which are used in aircraft engines. Korean domestic jet fuel, called Jet A-1, is tested for measurement of ignition delay time by using a shock tube manufactured recently. The temperature varies from 680 to 1250 K and the pressure and equivalence ratio of Jet A-1/air are fixed 20 atm and 1.0, respectively, for this experiment. The ignition delay time data of Jet A-1 are compared with those of Jet A, which has similar properties to Jet A-1. The behavior of negative-temperature-coefficient (NTC) is observed in the temperature range 750-900 K. In addition, ignition delay time of iso-octane is measured, which is one of the surrogate components for jet aviation fuel. The experimental data are compared and validated with the previous results from the literatures. A surrogate fuel for the present Jet A-1 consists of 45.2% n-dodecane, 32.1% iso-octane, and 22.7% 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene. The predicted ignition delay time for the surrogate agrees well with the measured one for Jet A-1.

  • The fire hazards and combustion heat of puzzle mats in group day care home were analysed using variable external irradiation level. The fire hazards such as ignition time, ignition temperature, mass loss rate, and flame temperature profile were measured. Incident heat fluxes of $15kW/m^2$, $20kW/m^2$, $25kW/m^2$, $35kW/m^2$, $50kW/m^2$ and $75kW/m^2$ were selected for these experiments. All samples were tested in the horizontal orientation and were wrapped in a single layer of aluminium foil. Each sample was nominally 20mm thick and 100mm square. Five samples of puzzle mat were tested in the study : Type A, B, C, D and E. Type A, B and C are all general grades whereas Type D and E are both Flame retardant grades. As results, Type E of FR-grade showed the best characteristics in safety of the early fire from ignition time, critical heat flux, and ignition and flame temperature data of this study. All specimen of G-grade(Type A, B and C), however, showed the weak in safety of fire.

  • CWS(coal-water slurry) is used for application in power plants, boilers, industrial furnaces. A single coal-water slurry droplet ignition has been examined to reveal the basic nature of their evaporation, volatilization and heating processes. The interior droplet temperature distribution has been considered. The effect of coal thermal conductivity, droplet size, water fraction in the slurry, gas temperature and velocity and radiation on the ignition phenomena were also studied. Either increasing the velocity and gas temperature or decreasing the droplet size and water fraction in the slurry may reduce the time for evaporation and ignition delay time.

  • The success of continuous aluminum powder combustion with steam plasma is different from hydrocarbon ignition source. Ignition characteristics of aluminum powder with high temperature thermal plasma is studied with oxidizer-free environment. Experiment with argon plasma has same temperature conditions at 4500 K and particle feeding condition for previous combustion test with steam plasma and swirl combustor. The temperature of the plasma was measured using Optical Emission Spectroscopy method. Ignition characteristics were analyzed by SEM image and EDS. Aluminum powder with plasma has rapid evaporation mechanism contrast to hydrocarbon ignition source. It enhances to aluminum powder effective ignition characteristics.

  • This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel is injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. Investigated are the engine performance and emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 32 to 63 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, and 150 to 18$0^{\circ}C$ in the inlet air temperature. The compression ignition gasoline engine can be achieved that the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air. For example. the allowable lean limit of air-fuel ratio is extended until 63 at engine speed of 1000 rpm and inlet air temperature of 17$0^{\circ}C$. It can be achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide had been significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engine.

  • This work treats a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel was injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector was water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. The engine performance and emission characteristics were investigated under the wide range of operating conditions such as 40 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, 150 to $180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet-air temperature, and $60^{\circ}$ BTDC in the injection timing. The ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air was achieved in a controlled auto-ignition gasoline engine. It could be also achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engines.

  • Attempts are being made to investigate temperatures dependence of minimum ignition energy (MIE) based on concept of quantity of heat and thermal ignition theory. Regression equations for predicting MIE by means of temperature variations on the basis of statistical and mathematical methods are proposed. This study is undertaken to learn what proposed method is satisfactory hydrocarbons(propane and pentane). The proposed method has been tested and compared sucessfully with previously reported data in various journal.

  • In this study, ignition tests of a gas turbine combustor were performed to evaluate an ignition loop at low temperature condition. An experimental setup was constructed to simulate low temperature condition with a heat exchanger using dry ice as a coolant. Various low temperature conditions could be created by controlling the amount of air though the heat exchanger. The results showed that ignition limit decreased with air temperature.

  • This study set three kinds of situation and observed the various states such as carbonization by experimenting damages by fire of electric iron. The results of this study are as follows: The fire did not occurred when the unpowered iron over mattress and cotton shirts was com busted completely by external flame because the temperature of surface of soleplate and mattress did not reach the minimum ignition energy and when the powered electric iron over mattress and cotton shirts was left for an hour with its temperature dial set to high because the temperature of combustibles did not reach the minimum ignition energy. The fire occurred when the electric iron in which the outer box, bi-metal switch, and temperature fuse were removed over mattress and cotton shirts was powered by through heater terminal, and then the electric iron, mattress, and cotton shirts were combusted by the fallen combustibles because the temperature of combustibles reached to the minimum ignition energy with the help of active transfer of heat.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate reduction of exhaust gas temperature in LPG conversion engine from diesel. A conventional diesel engine was modified to a LPG(Liquified Petroleum Gas) engine that diesel fuel injection pump was replaced by the LPG fuel system. The research was peformed with measurement of exhaust gas temperature by varying spark ignition timing, air-fuel ratio, compression ratio, EGR ratio and different compositions of butane and propane. The major conclusion of this work were followed. (i) Exhaust gas temperature was decreased and power was increased with the advanced spark ignition timing. (ii) Exhaust gas temperature was decreased with lean and rich air-fuel ratio. (iii)Exhaust gas temperature was decreased and power was increased with the higher compression ratio. (iv) Engine power and exhaust temperature were not influenced by varied butane/propane fuel compositions. (v) Finally, one of the important parameters in reduction of exhaust gas temperature is spark ignition timing among the parameters in this study.
