  • To propose a new fire hazard assessment criteria of interior finish materials, the properties and incident heat flux of interior finish materials in a compartment fires are investigated and compared by using flame spread model developed by Quintiere. The properties considered on which fire growth depend are including flame heat flux and thermal inertia, lateral flame spread parameter, heat of combustion and effective heat flux and thermal inertia, lateral flame spread parameter, heat of combustion and effective heat of gasfication. ISO Room Corner Test(9705) is applied in the model and the time for total energy release rate to reach 1MW is examined. The results are compared for the 24 different materials tested by EUREFIC. Dimensionless parameter a, b and ${\gamma}$b are used to develope a new method in which fire hazard of interior finish materials can be classified resulting from correlation between b and flashover time. Results show that if b greater than about zero, flashover time in the ISO Room-Corner Test is principally proportional to ignition time only.

  • Trends in the automotive market require the application of new engine technologies, which allows for the use of different types of fuel. Since ethanol is a renewable source of energy and has lower $CO_2$ emissions than gasoline, ethanol produced from biomass is expected to be used more frequently as an alternative fuel. It is recognized that for spark ignition (SI) engines, ethanol has the advantages of high octane number and high combustion speed. Due to the disadvantages of ethanol, it may cause extra wear and corrosion of electric fuel pumps. On-board hydrogen production out of ethanol is an alternative plan. This paper investigates the influence of ethanol fuel on SI engine performance, thermal efficiency and emissions. The combustion characteristics with hydrogen-enriched gaseous fuel from ethanol are also examined. As a result, thermal efficiency increase compared to gasoline. Also, reductions in $CO_2$, NOx, and THC combustion products for ethanol vs. gasoline are described.

  • Recently, 2-dimensional flat light sources have been attracting much attention for its use in LCD backlight applications because of its high luminous efficiency and uniformity. A long-gap discharge, mercury-tree flat fluorescent lamp has been developed, which shows a high brightness ($>5000\;cd/m^2$) and high luminous efficacy (60 lm/W). Additionally, it has a wide operating margin and stable driving condition with the aid of an auxiliary electrode. For driving the lamp, a narrow pulse power to maintain the glow discharge state is required. Since there has been no research for this kind of lamp driving, this paper proposes a newly developed short-pulse, high-voltage lamp-driving scheme. The proposed lamp system uses a ballast with a coupled-inductor in order to raise the short pulse voltage up to the lamp ignition level and to obtain energy-recovery action during the glow discharge mode. The operation principles are presented and also the system performances such as the lighting efficiency, spatial and angular uniformities are evaluated by hardware experiments. The results show that the proposed lighting system is a good candidate for the next-generation of LCD backlight systems.

  • Non-edible vegetable oils instead of edible vegetable oils as a substitute for diesel fuel are getting a renewed attention because of global reduction of green house gases and concerns for long-term food and energy security. Out of various non-edible vegetable oils, karanja, mahua, linseed, rubber seed and cotton seed oils are selected in this study. A brief review of recent works related to the application of the above five vegetable oils and its derivatives in CI engines is presented. The production technologies of biodiesel based on non-edible vegetable oils are introduced. Problems in vegetable oil or biodiesel fuelled CI engine are included. In addition, future works related to spray characteristics of non-edible vegetable oil or biodiesel from it are discussed. The biodiesel fuel, irrespective of the feedstock used, results in a decrease in the emission of hydrocardon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM) and sulphur dioxide ($SO_2$). It is also said to be carbon neutral as it contributes no net carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Only oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are reported to increase which is due to oxygen content in the biodiesel fuel. The systematic assessment of spray char-acteristics of neat vegetable oils and its blends, neat biodiesel and its blends f3r use as diesel engine fuels is required.

  • HCCI engines fueled DME and natural gas have been studied on single-cylinder engine due to availability of reducing on $NO_X$ and PM simultaneously without deteriorating into high thermal efficiency, and thus it is clarified that higher maximum engine load is achieved as DME equivalence is smaller. In this study, combustion tests were accomplished on multi-cylinder engine for practical use of it. When minimum DME equivalence achieved maximum engine load on single-cylinder engine was applied to 4-cylinders engine, there was in unstable running condition that engine revolution fluctuated greatly and cyclically. It is the reason what misfire occurred intermittently with one the same as minimum DME equivalence on single-cylinder due to increase in energy for ignition at No. 1 cylinder with lower cylinder liner temperature. Maximum engine load was achieved by adopting EGR, though it decreased because of knocking at smaller engine load than single-cylinder due to increase in minimum DME equivalence.

  • Biogas is widely accepted as one of renewable energy. Raw biogas can be used in internal combustion engines either spark ignition or diesel engines. Since the gas has relatively low calorific values, engine power also is lower than rated power values. Modified engines or biogas-specific engines have been utilized in order to increase efficiency. Recently, gas engine/generators are provided for various purposes. They are mostly for LPG or natural gas. When biogas is fueled to the gas engines, de-rating is inevitable due to its lower calorific values. Meanwhile, massively produced commercial gas engines are more competitive in terms of initial investment for engines, compared to biogas-specific engines. Then, the characteristics of the commercial engine and power generation should be understood for better operation. A 5kW gas engine/generator(natural gas) was tested for determining an allowable maximum concentration of $CO_2$ in synthetic biogas, with respect to engine stating, power generation. Experimental results indicated that about 65% of methane concentration is required to start the gas engine. At this condition, the power generated was about 3 kW. It is about 60% of the nominal power, which is similar to the ratio of calorific values.

  • In this study, a spark ignition engine operated with LPG and DME blended fuel was studied experimentally. The effect of n-butane and propane on performance and emissions of a SI engine fuelled by LPG/DME blended fuel were examined. Stable engine operation was achieved for a wide range of engine loads with propane containing LPG/DME blended fuel compare to butane containing LPG/DME blended fuel since octane number of propane was much higher than that of butane. Also, engine output operated with propane containing blended fuel was comparable to pure LPG fuel operation. Engine output power was decreased and break specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was increased with the blended fuel since the energy content of DME was much lower than that of LPG. Considering the results of engine output power, bsfc, and exhaust emissions, the propane containing LPG/DME blended fuel could be used as an alternative fuel for LPG.

  • The experiment was done on cars travelling at the speeds of 20km/h, 60km/h and 100km/h using the performance testing mode for chassis dynamometer. In this experiment, the relativity between the secondary waveform coming from ignition coil and exhaust emissions were measured in case of cars with failures, in oxygen sensor, spark plugs. The following results obtained by analysis of the relativity between the secondary waveform and exhaust emissions. 1) When the oxygen sensor is failure, the average value of CO emission measured was 6.8 times higher than the standard CO emission value and the average value of HC emission measured was 2.3 times higher than the standard emission level. 2) When engine parts are in failure, more fuel enters the cylinder due to longer opening duration of injector, and it tended to make CO and HC emission values increase. 3) Combustion duration, the shape of flame propagation during spark line, and the size of the discharge-induced energy were the three main elements that directly cause variations in CO and HC emission values.

  • The aim of this research is to enhance the bottom environment of Geoje fish farm that has been severely contaminated. Treatment of microbial agent and/or calcium oxide significantly changed that environment: in ignition loss, either treatment (25% or 21%) showed better than mixed treatment (13.2%). In COD, the oxygen releasing agent or mixed treatment reduced the index by more than 20%. In T-P and T-N, the effects of $CaO_2$ on them were overwhelming (50% or more) meanwhile that of the microbial agent on them was less than 20%. Also, $CaO_2$ influenced on the microbial flora: Desulfobvibrio thermophilus, a sulfate reducing bacterium decreased in number, considering the increase of pH and rise of redox potential. In contrast, Pseudomonas sp., Pseudoalteromonas sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa were remarkably dominant over other species with mixed treatment as a PCA analysis confirmed it.

  • It is necessary to install the arc generation facility in order to obtain the important technology for the design of breakers and switches, and for the improvement of their performance and reliability. With this facility, it is possible, to study the characteristics of Arc in air/gas/vacuum insulation environment. The facility briefly consists of capacitor bank which can charge enormous energy, an air-core reactor, experimental arc-chamber, and several measurement equipments. This facility can simulates the arc phenomena in breakers and switches by means of generating high currents. In order to study the arc phenomena in SF6 gas and vacuum and to test the quenching performance of the extinguishing chambers which are developing. we made experimental $SF_6$gas/vacuum chambers and measured several parameter's of chambers. And besides we visualized arc ignition and arc movement by means of high speed camera.
