  • Igniter system of Solid Rocket Motor is classfied as Forward-end type and After-end type. Forward-end type is used for sustentation of combustion pressure by nozzle plug. But After-end type is used for sustentation of combustion pressure by igniter mount. Igniter Mount is assembled on nozzle throat. Igniter mount holds combustion pressure and igniter release energy. A study has qualificated result of Dynamic behavior for After-end igniter mount of Static Firing Test and Finite element method.

  • A pyrogen type igniter was designed to satisfy the requirements of KSLV-I Kick Motor system. To insure the reliability of the igniter before the production of the flight model, we have been performed the structure, environmental, combustion tests. The hydraulic test was carried out to confirm the strength of the components of the igniter. The shock and vibration tests were considered to check whether the igniter operates normally under the severe environmental condition. The combustion tests were also performed to understand the ignition characteristics with the variation of initial condition. Finally, we confirmed that the igniter could provide the acceptable energy to ignite the propellant of kick motor at the ground test.

  • A numerical model of the igniter for the interior ballistics has been developed combining the lumped parameter model with the theoretical equation of the orifice. With the developed model of the igniter, the numerical study on characteristics of the interior ballistics according to the igniter configuration in terms of the igniter length, the side hole diameter, and the distribution of side holes has been conducted. As results of the calculation of the pressure difference between the breech and shot base, the low frequency oscillations have been influenced by the igniter length, while the high frequency oscillations have been affected by the side hole diameter and the distribution of side holes.

  • Adopting an engine igniter with high efficiency and ignition performance is essential for reliable operation of liquid rocket engines. In this study, we developed a spark torch igniter for a 450 N-scale methane-oxygen liquid rocket engine by conducting numerical analyses, igniter manufacturing and validation. Specifically, we conducted a parametric study for maximizing the enthalpy at the igniter exit, specifically by adjusting the mass flow rate, nozzle area ratio, fuel-oxidizer mixture ratio, and the igniter length-to-diameter. The heat transferred via the igniter nozzle exit was computed using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. We also manufactured and tested the igniter based on a deduced design to confirm ignition performance of the designed spark torch igniter. The igniter developed through this study could contribute to the development of practical propulsion systems such as upper-stage engines of small launch vehicles.

  • Many of the liquid rocket engines use a hypergolic igniter with rupture disc ends located in the combustion chamber ignition line. In this study, the flow coefficient tests of the igniter, which have a solenoid valve upstream, were performed. The tension-type rupture discs for radial and circumferential scores and the igniter with them were tested using water at room temperature. The effects of the score, flow rate, the disc thickness, gas pocket and the solenoid valve on the coefficient were analyzed.

  • The combustion pressure and thrust of aft-igniter were measured to investigate the characteristics of ignition charge. Granule and pellet shape ignition charge of $BKNO_3$ and MTV(Magnesium-Teflon-Viton) were used for igniters. Ignitions with granule charges show abrupt increases of combustion pressure and thrust compared to those of pellet charge. $BKNO_3$ igniter shows higher combustion pressure than MTV igniter due to higher combstion rate. Mg particle size affects the combustion pressure of MTV igniter.

  • In plasma jet ignition, combustion enhancement effects occur toward the plasma jet issuing direction. Therefore, when the igniter is attached at the center of a cylindrically shaped combustion chamber, plasma jet should issue toward the round combustion chamber wall. The plasma jet igniter that had an annular circular orifice has been developed. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the relationship between the newly developed plasma Jet igniter configuration and combustion enhancement effects. In this newly developed plasma Jet igniter, flame front wrinkle appears on the flame front and flame propagates rapidly. Plasma Jet influences on the flame propagation far long period when the plasma jet igniter has issuing angle 90 degrees and large cavity volume, because the plasma jet only lasts several ms. However, in the early stage of combustion, flame front area of issuing angle 45 degrees is larger than that of 90 degrees, because the initial flame kernel is formed by the plasma jet.

  • In this paper, authors described on localization development's results about an electric igniter in thermal battery with a pyrotechnic heat sources. Especially, the development test and evaluation(DT&E) process and the methods in the developments of the electric igniter which is parts of a domestic thermal battery on K-PSAM was in charge of government and developed for defense of a local areas in Korea. We have proposed a process of design and manufacture on the electric igniter. Finally, we verified a quality and a reliability of the electric igniter from test results by Fisher-Snedecor's law and over 99.5 %(C.L. 95 %) for K-PSAM.
